An American astronaut and Russian cosmonaut have returned to Earth after an unprecedented period of almost a year in space for NASA. The time spent by Scott Kelly, 52, and Mikhail Kornienko, 55, on the International Space Station was intended to pave the way for human travel to Mars. A Soyuz capsule carrying the pair and a second Russian cosmonaut made a parachute landing in Kazakhstan three and a half hours after they left the ISS. Kelly’s 340 day stint is the longest US space mission on record. He and Kornienko have been the subjects of dozens of medical experiments and science studies trying to learn more about the effects of space and weightlessness on the human body. The longest missions in space, lasting 438 days, were carried out by four Russian cosmonauts in the mid-1990s. Kelly and his identical twin brother Mark, a former NASA astronaut, are also taking part in genetic studies to see how individuals respond to different conditions. The silver-colored camera is said to be the only one to return from NASA's moon missions in early 19-70s. The final sale price far surpassed the camera's estimated worth which was about 2-hundred-thousand euros. The model was used by astronaut Jim Irwin to take 299 pictures during the Apollo 15 mission in 19-71. 13 other cameras that were used on the lunar surface during NASA's Apollo 11-to-17 missions were abandoned there to reduce the weight of the returning spacecraft that brought back moon rock.   Less

The US Space Agency NASA has chosen Boeing and California’s SpaceX to develop a new system to take American astronauts into space. The companies will build and and operate so-called “space taxis” to fly personnel to the International Space Station. It means the end of US dependence on Russia whose Soyuz vehicles replaced the retired space shuttles in 2011. NASA spokesperson Charles F. Bolden jr. : “By combining private sector ingenuity with bipartisan national commitment and the unmatched expertise of NASA we are not only better able to stretch the boundaries of the possible, we’re strengthening our economy and creating good jobs for our people.” That said the multi-billion dollar contract has also taken on a new urgency since relations between Washington and Moscow have become strained over the crisis in Ukraine. Washington also says it is a question of cost: The price per flight now being charged by Moscow is $70m (54m euros) a seat which it says is excessive. The seven-passenger capsules known as CST-100 will fly atop an Atlas V rocket from Cape Canaveral, in Florida and return to earth with the assistance of a heat shield and parachutes.   Less

Hundreds have gathered at the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida to remember the victims of the Challenger shuttle disaster, 30 years on. Six astronauts and a teacher were killed when the space shuttle exploded during lift off in January 1986. The names of the dead were read out during the memorial service. The flight, in January 1986, lasted just 73 seconds after a rubber seal in one of the shuttle’s twin booster rockets failed, triggering an explosion. The disaster exposed design shortcomings and operational problems in the US space programme. The crew of the Challenger included: Mission Commander Francis (Dick) Scobee, Gregory Jarvis, Judith A. Resnik, Ronald E. McNair, Mike J. Smith, Ellison Onizuka and Christa McAuliffe. NASA also paid tribute to the crews of Apollo 1 and space shuttle Columbia.   Less

NASA is preparing to launch two missions to explore the Arctic following data that showed 2015 to be the warmest year on record. According to the US space agency, 2016 so far appears to be hot on last year’s heels, prompting sea ice to grow at an exceptionally slow rate. NASA scientist Walt Meier says the effects could be wide-ranging: “The Arctic has been kind-of like an air conditioner, a cool region that helps keep the planet cooler, and we’re losing the efficiency on that. And as that contrast decreases, the Arctic warms with the lower latitudes.” “We’re seeing the changes in wind patterns and things like the jet-streams, storm tracks, changing in response to this different balance between the polar regions in the lower latitudes. And that of course has wide-ranging effects throughout the Northern Hemisphere in the United States, Europe, and so-forth.” The two new NASA missions, called Operation Ice Bridge and Oceans Melting Greenland, will monitor the health of the Arctic from space and on the ground.   Less

An Orbital ATK Cygnus capsule loaded with 2,400 kilos of food, supplies, equipment and science experiments has docked with the International Space Station, 410 kilometres above the earth. The unmanned capsule lifted off from aboard an Antares rocket on Wallops Island in Virginia on Monday. A successful launch The last Antares launch in 2014 ended in disaster a few seconds after lift-off, due to a problem with the booster’s refurbished, Soviet-era engines. After the accident, Orbital sped up plans to replace the motors. A crucial service The mission became more crucial for the US space agency after a an accident in September destroyed a rocket operated by SpaceX. The accident happened while the rocket was being refueled for a pre-launch test. SpaceX, the only company apart from Orbital currently contracted by NASA to fly cargo to the space station, has been temporarily grounded. Special delivery Private contractors for the cargo runs became necessary following the retirement of the space shuttles in 2011. With SpaceX sidelined, NASA said it added extra food, clothing, laptop computers and spacesuit parts to the Cygnus cargo list. The US initially planned to train 54-hundred militants per year, but so far fewer than one-hundred volunteers have turned up. Last week, military officials said that they still hope to attract three-thousand militants by the end of the year. In 20-14, the White House asked Congress for five-hundred million dollars to fund the program. However, the training is moving so slowly that critics are questioning whether it can produce capable militants quickly enough to make a difference. The US military has reportedly restarted a controversial program to train and equip dozens of so-called moderate militants in Syria, just a year after acknowledging the program helped Daesh and other terrorist groups. The Pentagon restarted the program after coming under fire just last year for admitting that much of the 500-million dollar effort to equip the trainees ended up in Daesh hands. The Syrian government has repeatedly said that the US is providing support to terrorist groups operating in the country under the guise of helping opposition forces. These cyber attack claims “are served to pump billions and billions of dollars into the US cyber command to create this offensive technology,” said Bruce Gagnon of Global Network against Weapons & Nuclear Power in Space. “It’s the usual US MO, the method of operation, modus operandi… to lie, accuse others of doing things and then do it themselves,” Gagnon told Press TV on Thursday. “Claiming repeatedly that China or Russia or anyone else has constantly attacked the United States really helps insure that more and more profits go into the cyber warfare program of the US and the allied corporations that are running it,” he added. Ties between the two countries have soured after Washington accused Beijing of cyber spying recently. US Secretary of State John Kerry said Wednesday that cyber hacking has threatened US security and "harmed American businesses." On Thursday, director of national intelligence James Clapper accused China of being "the leading suspect" in a massive data breach of US government personnel files, saying Washington "continues to investigate." A Russian Soyuz spacecraft carrying an American astronaut and two Russian cosmonauts has docked with the International Space Station. The two spacecraft hooked up over southern Russia, two days after blasting off from Kazakhstan. The trio joined three other ISS crew members who’ve been on board the station since July: an American, a Russian and a Japanese national. They’re due to return to Earth towards the end of this month. The mission of the new crew members will last until February. As well as adapting to microgravity, they’re due to receive supplies from a supply spacecraft in just two days time. The International Space Station orbits around 400 kilometres above Earth. The next Soyuz mission is set to blast off on its way to the ISS in mid-November. NASA hopes to resume flying crewmembers from the United States in 2018 aboard capsules being developed by Boeing and the privately-owned SpaceX.   Less
