American officials say the Obama administration is ready for unilateral military action in Syria, after British lawmakers rejected a government motion in support of military assault against the Arab country. The call for a quick international strike against Syria faced a major pushback Thursday, when British lawmakers in the House of Commons voted 285-272 against the motion proposed by Prime Minister David Cameron. Unlike the military offensive against Libya in 2011 which was carried out by a large coalition, officials said US President Barack Obama is prepared to act in coming days without Britain. Less

Until now, there has not been a military strike on Syria, even though some high-ranking US officials stated Thursday to be D-day. In this edition of The Debate we'll discuss the possibilities of a military strike, the strategic positioning of US and its allied forces and whether countries involved will illegally wage this war without UN approval based on the false allegations of Syrian use of chemical weapons and the RtoP doctrine. The United States and its western allies have been dragging their feet in dealing with an attack on Syria. However Israeli officials are reportedly livid that US president Barack Obama says the Congress must vote on whether the US will attack Syria or not. Israel considers Barack Obama's decision to delay military intervention in Syria as a sign of weakness. Some Israeli media sources have even called the US president a "coward". What are Israel's stakes in a military intervention in Syria? Why are Israel, some Arab states and the Syrian Turkey-based opposition pressing for military action against Syria? Less

Retired four-star general, former NATO Supreme Allied Commander, and former Democratic Presidential candidate Wesley Clark criticizes the course of U.S. foreign policy in the wake of the September 11 attacks. At around 2:00 in this clip he says that the US planned to attack 7 countries in 5 years; Syria is on the list. October 3, 2007 - Commonwealth Club of California I searched here on LiveLeak and couldn't find this clip, but it deserves another listen today anyway. Maybe he was just trying to hype up his book sales, or maybe there was something more to it... seems like a strange story for a retired general to just make up though. #financial_support_div{ display:none; position: absolute; width:300px; height:140px; margin-left: -150px; margin-top: -70px; /*- half of width and height */ top:50%; left:50%; padding: 5px; opacity:0.9; filter:alpha(opacity=90); z-index:1000; background-color:#000; color: white; } .close_box{ background: gray; color:#fff; padding:1px 3px; display:inline; position:absolute; right:1px; margin-right: -13px; margin-top: -13px; border-radius:3px; cursor:pointer; border: 1px #000 solid; } $(document).on("click",".close_box",function(){ $(this).parent().fadeTo(300,0,function(){ $(this).remove(); }); }); Loading the player ... As the United States steps up its war rhetoric against Syria, the global opposition to an attack on the Arab nation is also growing. Russia still complains that Washington has failed to provide any proof of the claim that Syria was behind the recent gas attack near Damascus. Other countries including veto-wielding China are also against military intervention in Syria. This, as the Leader of Iran's Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei says any US attack on Syria will backfire on America. Less

As the US administration struggles to gain Congressional and international support for its plans to attack Syria, people across the world hold rallies to express their opposition. In the Lebanese capital, Beirut protesters staged a rally outside the US embassy for the second day, denouncing a strike on Syria. In the Philippines, demonstrators gathered in the capital, Manila, to express their opposition to a possible military intervention in Syria. Pakistani Shia Muslims held a protest rally in the port city of Karachi against the war on Syria. US cities were also the scene of protests against White House's war plan. In New York City, demonstrators took part in a rally in Times Square against the war. In Washington, protesters rallied in front of the White House urging Congress to reject President Barack Obama's plan. Less

In the US, an investigation is underway after some college students removed American flags set up to mark the nine-eleven incidents. Students at Middlebury College in the state of Vermont are outraged after protesters took down a September eleven memorial site on campus. The memorial was comprised of nearly 3-thousand flags-- one for each life lost in the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City. According to the news site of the college, the memorial has been placed in the same field for almost ten years. Four women and one man were seen uprooting the flags and putting them in garbage bags. Middlebury College President, Ron Liebowitz, has denounced the protest and announced an investigation into the incident. Less

2 men have been executed in the U-S with a drug which hasn't been approved yet by federal authorities. In Texas, which has the highest rate of executions compared to any other U-S state, a 34-year-old Michael Yowell was executed after the Supreme Court denied his final appeal. Meanwhile in Arizona, a 71-year-old Edward Schad was executed using the same drug. He had argued that the barbiturate used for lethal injections in Arizona had not been approved by federal regulators. Both Schad and Yowell were executed using a lethal injection with a new barbiturate. The US Food and Drug Administration has not yet approved the drug. Schad and Yowell's were the 29th and 30th executions so far this year in the United States. Less

There are signs in Washington that the administration and the Congress are at odds over a plan to ease certain financial sanctions on Iran. The Obama administration is reportedly considering a plan to offer Iran the chance to recoup tens of billions of dollars in frozen overseas assets. But the plan is contingent on Iran taking steps to scale back its nuclear program. However, reports say the Congress will oppose this approach. The Senate is studying a plan that would tighten the financial sanctions on Iran. It would allow an easing of sanctions only if Tehran halts its uranium enrichment activities - even though Iran has clearly set that as its red line. This has now raised concerns in Washington that the Senate is attempting to put constraints on the administration's ability to negotiate with Iran. Less
