US President Barack Obama's approval rating has dropped to a new low. According to a new poll, Americans dislike Obama's policies on economy, healthcare and the crisis in Ukraine. The poll conducted by The Washington Post & ABC News suggests that Obama's rating sunk to 41 percent from 46 percent in the first three months of the year. This is considered to be a worrying sign for allied Democrats facing legislative elections in November. Experts say that when presidential ratings are as low as the current levels, his party is almost certain to take a hit from voters. Less

US paratroopers, who are in the country for upcoming national drills, conducted some air exercises as part of the anniversary celebrations. On May 4, 1990, the Supreme Council adopted the declaration of independence for the Republic of Latvia and sent a letter to Mikhail Gorbachev, the then Soviet Union President, officially declaring Latvia's transition to independence. Russia says it has imposed fresh sanctions against the United States and Canada in retaliation to their new punitive measures on Moscow. The Russian Foreign Ministry says it has expanded its lists of Canadian and US officials who are prevented from entering Russia. But it has not revealed the names of the barred individuals. Last month, the US slapped visa bans and asset freezes on several high-ranking Russian officials. Washington claims Moscow has failed to abide by the Geneva agreement to defuse the crisis in Ukraine. And back in March, the US and Canada announced successive rounds of sanctions over Crimea's integration into the Russian Federation. The US says the West is ready to impose more sanctions on Russia if Moscow fails to defuse the crisis. Less

Iran has unveiled a domestically produced version of a sophisticated US drone it captured back in 2011. The stealth drone was unveiled at an aerospace exhibition organized by the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps and attended by the Leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei. The US RQ-170 Sentinel was reverse-engineered by IRGC experts in about two years. The US spy aircraft had crossed into Iran’s airspace from Afghanistan when it was captured by an Iranian electronic warfare unit. Other Iranian drones including Shahed 129 and 125 were also on display at the exhibition in Tehran. Various domestically produced ballistic and anti-ship missiles as well as air defense systems were among other military achievements on display. Less

The United States and Britain are already under fire for their involvement the Iraq war, with many British and American troops accused of committing war crimes during the invasion. Back in January, the International Criminal Court was asked to investigate allegations of abuse and torture by British forces in the war-torn country. Now, the Hague-based court reopened an initial probe into allegations of war crimes committed by British soldiers after the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003. We have a report: Less

China's Defense Ministry slams the United States for double standards, amid a cyber-espionage row between the two sides. The ministry has said in an online statement that the US hypocrisy has long been obvious. Earlier, Beijing summoned US ambassador to Beijing Max Baucus over Washington's indictment of Chinese military officers in a cyber-espionage case. Beijing says the allegations are baseless and will jeopardize bilateral relations. The US government has charged five Chinese officials with hacking into private-sector American companies for competitive advantage. The accusations come as the US global spying scandal has drawn worldwide condemnation. Less

US President Barack Obama says the United States' combat mission in Afghanistan will end later this year, but thousands of US troops will stay in the war-torn country. Obama said the plan to keep U-S troops in Afghanistan next year depends on the Afghan government signing a long-delayed deal called the bilateral security agreement. Tension between Kabul and Washington is already high, with outgoing Afghan President Hamid Karzai throwing cold water on the agreement. However, the U-S president noted that the two candidates who faced off in the run-off of the Afghan presidential election have already agreed to sign the deal. And in the U-S, Republican senators John McCain and Lindsey Graham have criticized Obama's decision, calling it a monumental mistake. Less

The only US soldier held captive in Afghanistan has been freed in a prisoner swap deal with the Taliban militant group. Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl was freed in exchange for five Afghan prisoners kept in the US prison camp in Cuba's Guantanamo Bay. Bergdahl was captured by the Taliban in June 2009. Reports say he was handed over to American Special Forces in eastern Afghanistan near Pakistan's border in good health. Bergdahl was then transferred to US-run Bagram Airbase, from where he will first fly to Germany and then back home. Meanwhile, the Taliban have expressed joy at the release of its members, who are now on their way to Qatar. Under the agreement, the prisoners will remain in Doha's custody and will not be allowed to leave Qatar for at least one year. The soldier's release was mediated by Qatar. Less

Afghanistan condemns a deal between Taliban militants and the US, which led to the release of an American soldier in exchange for five former Guantanamo detainees. Kabul says it was never informed by Washington about such a deal. It also called for the immediate release of five Taliban prisoners who've been sent to Qatar. The Afghan Foreign Ministry says their transfer to a third country goes against the international law. Earlier in the day, the five militants arrived in Qatar after being freed from the Guantanamo prison in a swap deal for US soldier, Bowe Bergdahl. Meanwhile, US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has expressed hope that the release of Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl would lead to a new breakthrough with the Taliban militants. Less

Hoshyar Zebari said Baghdad has requested Washington’s help under the security agreement between the two countries. This, as the Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Martin Dempsey confirmed that Washington has received Baghdad's request. It comes against the backdrop of rising speculations that President Barack Obama has shifted his focus away from using air power to target the militants from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. U-S officials claim there are not clear targets the U-S could hit. Less

The United States is keeping more than 6-thousand security and back-up forces in Iraq. Sources say these forces are former military members who've remained in the country after changing their official job title. The US military presence in Iraq comes as the Obama administration has recently ordered the urgent deployment of several hundred troops to the troubled country. Washington is said to be after military operations in the Arab country under the pretext of fighting terrorism there. This is while, a recent poll by a US firm shows 74 percent of Americans oppose sending US forces to Iraq. The United States and its allies invaded Iraq in 2003. A couple of years before that, they also invaded Afghanistan under the pretext of fighting terrorism. But over a decade after these invasions, the two war-torn countries are still grappling with rampant militancy and a high humanitarian cost. Washington is also pressing ahead with its drone strikes in the region that has claimed the lives of thousands of civilians in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Yemen. Less

Baghdad says it has not agreed to immunity from prosecution for US troops in Iraq. The statement comes after reports from Pentagon said Baghdad had assured Washington that US forces would be immune from prosecution in Iraqi courts. The reports said the issue of US troops immunity was part of a deal for Iraq to receive military aid from the United States. The Iraqi government rejected the reports as baseless claims made by some media outlets. US president Barack Obama says Washington is sending 3-hundred Special Forces to advise the Iraqi army. Iraq has been on a state of high alert since militants from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant seized large swathes of land in the country's northwest sand started moving south toward Baghdad. Foreign-backed militants fighting against the Syrian government say they have received the second batch of US-made TOW anti-tank missiles. The insurgents are said to have received the missiles in the strategic region of Qalamoun. The Saudi daily Akkaz has confirmed the report. The militants of the Hazm movement for the first time received more than twenty US-made TOW missiles from a Western source in April. Online videos showed insurgents using the American-built weapons in the same month. Anti-Syria insurgents have frequently called on the West to provide them with sophisticated weaponry and more military support. The US has also time and again announced that it would arm and support what it calls "the moderate opposition" in Syria. Less
