Now, in a remarkable effort, a small group of ex-pats and locals have begun caring for the animals. For the last 35 years, endless conflict and war has caused Afghanistan's stray dog population to grow out of control. Exposed to extreme weather, traffic accidents, and hunger, these dogs are maligned by many in Afghan society for spreading diseases like rabies.nnBritish Royal Marine Pen Farthing founded Nowzad dog shelter in Afghanistan after rescuing a street dog while on his tour of duty in Helmand Province. Nowzad's mission is to sterilize the stray population and find adoptable homes for street animals. In addition to being one of the only dog shelters in Afghanistan, Nowzad employs the first Afghan female veterinarians in the country.nnOn the other end of the canine spectrum are fighting dogs. While illicit and taboo amongst many Afghans, dog fighting has long been a popular betting sport in Afghanistan. When the Taliban came to power in the 90s, they outlawed the sport. This is Akali's first visit to the dog park after getting her shots she is 6 months old in this video and we had just adopted her. Her father is a beautiful purebred black and white Malamute and her mother is a gorgeous copper colored husky. Aurora is the Purebred Siberian Husky (proven via DNA) that we rescued from a horrible breeder when she was 12 weeks old she (at that time) had cuts fleas and was covered in sawdust in addition to having much more fear than a little puppy should have. She is now a perfect angel (obviously) This was shot with my cell phone (LG Revolution) so the quality is not all that wonderful. This was taken at the Bea Arthur dog park in the side that is meant for small dogs (the large dog side is closed on Tuesdays when this was shot). We were alone all morning but we stayed about 6 hours and by mid day tons of pups and their people showed up and the dogs had a wonderful time! (PS. our Scottish Terrier was at home with Adam, he wanted to sleep after a full night shift and I decided it would be best to leave her home being that I did not know how Akali would react to the dog park.) Becky was a very pregnant stray boxer/pit mix that was wandering the streets of her small town when she crawled into someone's porch cupboard on a bitter cold night and gave birth to her babies. Lucky for her and her puppies, CCHS rescued them right away. The family was given food, shelter, and lots of love!
