A Maltese military aircraft spotted the vessel in distress about 60 nautical miles south of Lampedusa and Italian and Maltese military services have been working around the clock to save the panicked survivors. After a ten-hour journey aboard a Maltese vessel the survivors arrived at Malta's Valetta Port. The ship was carrying 19 women, 15 children and four bodies. On Saturday the Italian navy said that so far 206 people had been rescued and 34 bodies have been retrieved from the sea.nnIt is the second migrant boat tragedy in the region this month, after 339 people lost their lives on October 3 after their vessel sank near Lampedusa. According to the UN High Commisioner for Refugees 32,000 people have arrived in Italy and Malta this year. Also disingenuously referred to as fur "ranches," these facilities are more akin to industrialized torture camps.nnOn U.S. fur farms, one of the most frequently used methods of killing animals is electrocution: the "farmer" puts a metal clamp in an animal's mouth, a metal rod in the anus, and sends a high-voltage current surging through the body. Sometimes the power surge forces the rod out of the anus, so the procedure must be repeated to kill the animal. Other commonly-employed techniques include homemade gas chambers, such as a box hooked up to a tractor exhaust pipe; lethal injection of various chemicals that kill through paralysis, which can result in immobilized animals being skinned alive; and neck breaking.nnTo cut costs, fur farmers pack animals into small cages, preventing them from taking more than a few steps back and forth. This crowding and confinement is especially distressing to minks—solitary animals. The anguish and frustration of life in a cage leads minks to self-mutilate—biting at their skin, tails, and feet—and frantically pace and circle endlessly and may result in cannibalism to escape the other minks. The minks are born and die this way. They are slaughtered every year in November to be processed for winter coats. It takes between 30-70 Mink to make ONE coat- depending upon size.nnThis mink was saved when viewers donated money toward rescuing a ranch ostrich (a project which was not successful this year, but will be put on hold to next). The left over money was used to pull this baby mink from the farm and save him from this horrible fate. Minks are slaughtered every November to be processed for winter coats- but he will not be one of them. He will get to experiences all the joys of life. She has old fractures to her pelvis and limited use of her rear legs. We can only imagine the nightmare that she has lived thru, she was dumped in someone's yard and reported to local animal services. Orange County Animal Services asked for help for her and we gladly stepped up for her. She is going to need several surgeries and therapy to help her repair and regain use of her legs. She will need dental work as several of her teeth have exposed roots from the area of missing bone in her jaw. She just decided that was where she was going to stay until we came to get her.'nnShe suspects Maggie wriggled her way out of a small opening of her kennel's door, made for holding a water dish, after she heard the pups crying.nnAldred returned to the facility, where she was greeted by an ecstatic Maggie. Aldred told the news channel: 'She was really happy, and then she took me back to their room as if to say: "I really need to meet these puppies."'nnAldred opened the cage and watched as Maggie nuzzled the puppies and cuddled with them throughout the night.nnAldred said: 'They were just all so happy to be together. The puppies needed her and she needed them. It was pretty perfect.'nnDeanna Thompson of the Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society said she wasn't surprised by Maggie's escape. She told ABC 11: 'It's innate in a lot of female dogs, especially if they've had a litter in the past. I was driving home from work by the frozen water hole near my home, and spotted a dogs shivering white face on the ice ... he was neck deep under water on the opposite side of the small pond about sixty feet away. he was not making a sound.. or moving at all ... but. I could see him shivering and that meant alive... I instantly called the local Fire Department then I began to make my way around the half frozen watering hole thru tons of wild thorn bushes and to the dog... thankfully the FD took (at most) 3 minutes to arrive and they met me on the other side ... the dog seemed defeated , he did not have much fight left in him. I am very thankful and appreciative that our local Fire department and animal rescue services are ready to respond so quickly I don't know who's dog this is because he had no collar, but I hope they are happy to see him come home tonight. 3 different vids of this story PART#1, PART#2, PART#3   Less

The child, named Julia, went missing overnight on Friday from the small town of Pierzwin, in western Poland. She had last been seen playing with the small black mongrel on the same day. A search party of firefighters, police officers, rescue workers and residents scoured the area through the night and the child was eventually found the following morning, several kilometres from her home, with the dog by her side. She was heard calling for her mother. Firefighter Grzegorz Szymanski said Julia would probably not have survived the night had it not been for the dog's warmth. "For the whole night the animal was with the girl, it never left her. Remember, it was five degrees below zero and the child was wet," he said. Julia was taken to a hospital in Poland suffering from nothing worse than frostbite, despite having endured the harsh conditions.   Less

The child, named Julia disappeared with her pet dog from a village in western Poland. Approximately 250 firefighters, police, rescue personnel and nearby residents joined forces to search for the toddler. A helicopter with infrared cameras and search dogs were also deployed to find her. Julia was discovered the next day in a marshland with her loyal dog right by her side. Amazingly she survived frigid temperatures as low as 23 degree Fahrenheit throughout the night. The dog was reported to have kept her warm. She was taken to a local hospital but was said to be doing fine. In a similar report from last year, a 10-year-old boy with Down Syndrome, Kyle Camp disappeared from his Alabama home. The next morning, a male searcher discovered the young boy alive, in the woods with four puppies around him. He stated "Those puppies kept him company, they kept him warm and comfortable." Police think that Kyle may have followed the dogs into the woods.   Less

The girl and her grandmother were walking down Webster Avenue when the dog bolted toward her from across the street, then attacked her, flinging her around the sidewalk, the video shows. Witness Eduardo Candelier, who works at a nearby tire shop, ran toward the dog to pull it off the girl. "The dog was biting her," said Candelier. "The girl was crying, she was going crazy." No one realized the attack was caught on tape until the owner of the tire shop, Fred Paulino, checked his security video Monday morning. "You can see the dog is walking around with the girl in her mouth," said Paulino. The girl was taken to the hospital and treated for minor injuries, including small puncture wounds to her right arm and right leg. She was treated and released. The dog's owner, who lives near where the girl was attacked, stayed on the scene, police said. He was issued a summons for having a dog off the leash, but the dog was not taken away.   Less

Doohan, of East Rochester, was staying at the home of relatives in the nearby town of Penfield on Sunday night when he noticed a fire in the single-wide trailer, said Penfield Fire Chief Chris Ebmeyer.nnAs firefighters and sheriff's deputies responded to an emergency call around 4:45 a.m., Tyler was able to wake six other people in the small trailer, including two more children, ages 4 and 6, Ebmeyer said.nnThen Tyler went back into the blaze to help his grandfather, who was disabled and would have been unable to get out of the home on his own, Ebmeyer said.nn"By that time, the fire had traveled to the back of the trailer," Ebmeyer said. "Unfortunately they both succumbed to heat and smoke."nnTheir bodies were found together in a back bedroom.nnTyler's uncle was also killed in the fire, his body found in a front room, Ebmeyer said.nnEarlier, fire officials had released a mistaken version of the incident, where the grandfather and uncle's locations were switched, due to incorrect information provided by a family member.nn"It makes me really proud, it really does, but I just want him back," Tyler's mother, Crystal Vrooman, told CNN affiliate WHAM.nnThe boy broke away from his aunt outside the burning trailer and ran back inside to try to save his grandfather, she said.nn"All I could think about is how he couldn't breathe," she told WHAM.nnThe pair were found together on a bed in the back room. It appeared that the boy was trying to lift his grandfather from the bed when he was overcome by the smoke and fire, the fire chief said.nnTyler and his grandfather were like best friends, Vrooman said.nn"I'm just so grateful that he went with people that he loved," she said. "He didn't go alone."nnThe cause of the blaze is still under investigation but believed to be accidental.nnThe conditions of the six survivors were not immediately available.nnEbmeyer said the trailer had no working smoke detector. He lamented that with so many people in one small mobile home, one alarm could have easily woken everyone in time to escape.nnThere was at least one space heater inside the trailer, the fire chief said.nnSeveral pets -- including dogs, cats, a rabbit and hamsters -- also died in the fire, Ebmeyer said.nnThe Penfield Fire Company -- a volunteer unit -- intends to create a public service initiative to spread awareness and get smoke detectors out to the public, he said.nnMeanwhile, Richard Stutzman Jr., interim superintendent of the East Rochester School District, where Tyler attended fourth grade, issued a statement:nn"In bravely and selflessly giving his own life, he was able to save the lives of six others -- and he truly is a hero."   Less

However, shelters are also trying to find adoptive homes for all those that come into their care. Also, cat owners often forget to update the identification tags after moving. However, implanting a microchip is a permanent identification solution. Almost all shelters, veterinary clinics, and rescue groups routinely scan for microchips when a lost animal is brought to them.nnA microchip is smaller than a grain of rice, inserted just under the skin between the pet's shoulder blades. The microchip is inert, harmless, and will stay safely in place offering identification protection for life. Each microchip has a unique identification number and does not require a battery. However, microchips are not GPS devices or radio beacons that allow a pet to be located remotely.nnIt is important that owners register the microchip and their identification information with the correct registry. When your pet is "chipped" you will be given all the needed documentation for registration by the person implanting the microchip. There is a fee for registering the microchip. The child, Nina Boyett along with her aunt and a family friend discovered the mom and a puppy and knew they had to do something to save them. The mother dog had already gone into labor and had a litter of puppies under the barn. The family along with a rescue organization was able to get the adult canine out safely but 10 puppies were left under the structure. Unfortunately 9 of the puppies were dead, but there was one remaining survivor. Everyone could hear that sole pup yelping and Nina volunteered to help. There was an exceptionally tiny crawlspace under the barn. Given that very few adults could fit in the space, Nina got down on her belly and crawled to retrieve the pup and bring it to safety. The second grader was very calm as she brought the small pooch to her family and rescuers. The female puppy is doing great and has been named ‘Princess Nina’. The mother dog was also rescued and is said to be in good health.   Less

May 3rd, a cow elk has fallen through the ice on Hebgen Lake. Patrick Daigle, of Blue Ribbon Flies in West Yellwstone, along with a small group of concerned locals, Jake with Mt dept of transportation and Chuck to help facilitate the rescue. With the group of passers assembled, a few calls were made and a rescue operation was set in motion. The ice is still plenty thick and can hold multiple people, but in a few spots, underwater springs have weakened some areas which cannot be spotted by the elk. The cow elk seemed a little banged up, two dogs were reportedly biting at here ears when she was first spotted, and her shin was visibly raw from trying to free herself. All in all, she at least has a chance and we hope that she has warmed up in todays afternoon sun!!! I kept running out of memory, I was more concerned for the elk, and I was more concerned for me so sorry for the less than perfect video. The dogs were kept as many as four to a crate, and the crates averaged only 20" long by 13" wide by 11" tall in size. The crates were so small that many of the tiny dogs were unable to stand up straight.nnWhen questioned, the owner stated that the SPCA was taking her money and that she could "sell the puppies for $2,000 in Carmel."nnThe dogs and puppies will undergo emergency examinations by SPCA veterinarians, and receive lots of TLC from compassionate SPCA staff.nnWe are thankful to the many Monterey residents who reported this case and her various locations to the SPCA as the situation was mobile, the suspect had been actively evading humane officers.nnWhen purchasing a puppy, always research the breeder, meet the parents, see where they puppies are raised, and ask for veterinary records so that you do not support neglectful, inhumane breeders.   Less

A homeless dog's transformation: sick, sad and lonely on the streets, he is rescued and turns into a joyful dog surrounded by friends.nThis little dog was living in a cardboard box, on the streets and was in a very bad shape when we rescued him. We do not know if he ever had an owner as he didn’t have a microchip but taking into account his skin condition, he seemed to have been roaming the streets for a very long time: full of fleas, he developed an allergic dermatitis which led to hair loss on some parts of his body (especially on his neck and back). Untreated, it progressed, became chronic and got infected with Malassezia, a yeast that also caused him otitis. We had him on specific medication and medicated shampoos, but hair has still to grow on the affected areas. Except for the stubborn skin problem that we hope will be solved, Buzu is a healthy dog. He is ~5-6 years old, still a little shy with people he doesn’t know, very submissive and calm. He’s not very interested in exploring new territories and feels safer in the areas he knows, he likes to take a few runs in the garden, then to relax in the sun. He is friendly with other dogs and his best friend is a cat :) He appreciates most the things he didn’t have on the street: love, food and security. nHe is the kindest dog we’ve ever met and it’s so hard to understand how could have someone abandoned him and why he had been on the streets for so many years.nAnyone willing to offer him the love and home he deserves please contact us on howlofadog@gmail.com. He is a little warrior because he won the fight against the cold winter, hunger and suffering. Yet, this unjust fight called Abandon left him with a handicap. He lost a part of his hind paw, looking as if it had been chopped, probably he got it in a hunting trap or got it injured in another way, the wound being still open when we found him.nAfter a few visits at the vet his wound has healed, yet he still cannot use his hind leg for walking and, as a consequence of that, the muscles in that leg are partially atrophied. But we are confident that in time this problem may be solved with care and exercises. nLouie is a young dog, medium sized, ~10 kg (~22 lbs) now, but he still has to put on some weight. He is a very friendly dog, very obedient, kind and full of hope.nHis recovery would be much easier if he had a loving family next to him. He's an adorable baby cow who's convinced he's a dog.nnGoliath, who's actually a small calf, was rescued nearly two months ago from a dairy farm that was planning on slaughtering him, according to Shaylee Hubbs, a high school senior who lives with her family on a ranch in Danville, California.nnThough Goliath was "so weak and so small that he couldn't stand and you could pick him up very easily" when the family first got him, they've now nursed him into a healthy 8-week-old calf, Hubbs told ABC News today.nnThe only thing is that he doesn't think he's a cow at all.nn"I'm pretty sure he thinks he's a dog," said Hubbs, 17. "He was raised with our three dogs, and he's around them every day. They chase and play together, he watches how they eat their dog food and drink water from their bowls and copies them and he even lays in their dog beds. He even loves scratches on his neck around his ear."nnMost recently, Goliath learned how to get into the house and sit on the couch, thanks to Hubbs' sneaky 2-year-old Great Dane named Leonidas.nn"He's best friends with Leo, and so he used to watch Leo push down the door handle and come and sit on the couch," Hubbs said. "And of course, he now knows how to come in, too. He just pushes down on the knob with his head and lets himself in and onto our couch."nnA photo of Goliath on the family couch posted to Hubbs' Twitter has been retweeted over 32,000 times and liked over 54,000 times as of Thursday afternoon.nnGoliath and Leo are "best friends," according to Hubbs, who added that Leo "took to mothering the little cow" when he was first brought in.nn"He would lick the little cow on the face and try to nudge him to stand up," she said. Tweed a 19-month-old springer spaniel and Rob a 20-month-old black Labrador are the first police dogs in the UK, and the only dogs outside of the USA, to be trained to detect Digital Storage Devices.nnChief Superintendent Jim Nye, Commander for the Alliance Operations Department, said: “This is an historic step for the Alliance and policing in the UK. These dogs will give the police a new way to fight the threat of terrorism, paedophiles and fraudsters.nn“Tweed and Rob have been used by police at crime scenes and executions of warrants, not just within Devon, Cornwall and Dorset, but across the whole UK.nn“The dogs have been used to sniff out data devices such as mobile devices, USB sticks, SD cards, hard drives and computers.nn“Once again, we have shown that we are prepared to look at new technology and will always strive to get one step ahead to tackle criminality.”nnIn May 2015, Police Constable Graham Attwood, who is a police dog instructor for the force began to research the ability to train such a dog. PC Attwood identified that the first dogs in the world to train in Digital Storage Detection were trained at the Pioneering Connecticut State Police Dog unit, in the USA.nnFollowing his collaboration with Connecticut State police and FBI, a pilot scheme was started in December 2016.nnPC Attwood, said: “Myself and members of the alliance dog school, initially handled and trained Tweed and Rob, mainly in our own time, as we were committed to our usual daily duties of training the forces other operational police dogs.nn“The majority of the dogs we have in the force either come from our puppy breeding scheme or are gift or rescue dogs, but this was a unique challenge for us as so we identified and purchased Tweed and Rob last December when they were around 15 months old, and embarked on this journey with them.”nnPC Attwood, added: “Our digital dogs have already proven to be a success and have been used in over 50 warrants executed across the UK, includingHampshire, Essex, South Wales, and North Yorkshire”.nn“We have already seen some really fantastic results from these two dogs. Tweed on one warrant indicated that something may have been within what looked like a coke can. This was then inspected by a search officer and discovered that it was actually a money box which had a number of SD cards hidden within it.nn“Rob has also indicated a small device hidden carefully in a draw which would have likely to have been missed by the human eye; which just goes to show that they are able to locate these items which assists us greatly with our searches.”nnRob and Tweed are part of a trial, and the force will assess the success of these dogs and their new skills at the end of the 2017 with a view to rolling this out wider. Just because these puppymills are disgusting doesn't mean their proprietors don't know how to Photoshop picture or meet "adopters' (don't get me started there!) somewhere else to cleanly sell puppies for thousands of dollars.nn The websites and ads do not show the starvation. The blindness. The botched C-sections. The death these animals faced 24 hours a day for their entire life. Just so your aunt, your cousin, your neighbor, your co-worker could buy their name brand puppy. Please watch this video and consider having a (reasonable, positive) conversation with those who are still ignorant to the plight of puppy mill dogs.nn Although our focus is on our large dogs, these little guys won our heart. All of the 132 dogs that ARC took from this puppy mill will go to top of the line animal rescue groups around the country for intensive medical care and placement. We are not a small-breed rescue. we don't know a Lhasa from a Shih-tzu but we do know love. We do know dogs. We do know amazing vets. This camera is nothing short of a miracle for doc work.nnthe bad:nI couldn't find out if it had a waveform - so I was just protecting for the highlights. the zebra feature doesn't seem intuitive or perfect -hard to see blow out - also hard to make sure it was working okay. hope there is a future firmware upgrade to fix this. there is some jello - not too bad, but not as good as the alexa. Also the menu system is crazy hard to figure out like the f5 and f55. shooting super slo mo had some pretty blocky noise - maybe going to an external recorder will be better. I have so much faith especially seeing fs700 internal slo mo vs fs700 to odyssey 7q slo mo.nnbut overall - can you really complain with a camera that costs 9k and basically a Sony F5.nnOn making the film - we shot following the principles of Dogma '95. On Friday, a crew in Lacey, Washington responded to a structure fire.They swiftly went to work putting out the flames. During the efforts, they learned a hamster family was still in the building.Like true heroes, they went inside the structure and brought the tiny creatures outdoors. The life saving job wasn’t over however. The firefighters had to treat the hamsters with oxygen. They used a tiny, makeshift mask to revive them. The fire chief remarked “We have a whole aid kit we use in house fires that fits dogs and cats. We don’t have anything that small, but we’re pretty good at improvising.”The crew used their training and knowledge from a 'pet emergency pocket guide' to carry out the first aid methods. There were five rodents that had been pulled out of the burning building. The crew was able to save the lives of all but one. I first saw his photo on a facebook post. It looked like a scene from a horror movie. If you’re involved in Animal Welfare in Greece you see too much suffering every day, but that photo really broke my heart.nI had no idea what I was in for when I said “get him here and I’ll foster him” but the next day two of our volunteers travelled 70 kilometers to get to him. We all met at the vet the same evening. When we took him out of his box the sight of his suffering body and his absolute terror were so petrifying that we couldn’t even cry. We were pretty sure that we had taken him off the streets just to offer him the chance of a dignified death and that the vet would advise that we put him to sleep. But he didn’t. He examined him, took blood samples and send us home. He suffered from a very contagious type of mange so we put him in a small bathroom upstairs. He just laid there in the corner and was so obvious he just needed to be left alone. So we let him rest. Those first couple of weeks were so overwhelming for both of us. He must have been feeling so safe and secure in that small room that he slept for hours and hours. He would eat four times a day and then just go back to sleep. I felt like I had a tiny treasure to protect and nurture, and checked on him a dozen times per day. I never heard a sound coming from that room upstairs. Not barking, nor scrathing not even the slightest movement. I’d simply open the door, change his water, put food on his plate and watch him go back to sleep. He must have felt so cosy in that bed that he’d only get up to pee every 24 hours. nWithin 10 days he had already grown stronger and started taking small walks out on the terrace. The first time he wagged his tail made my heart melt. He looked so much stronger and healtier from one week to another that our first thought of having to put him to sleep now looked simply ridiculous.nWhen we shot the scenes for the “after” part of his rescue video it almost looked fake. It had taken Billy less than two months to become a gorgeous, trusting and loving dog. nAnd then this email arrived from 2000 kilometers away. It was the first and only adoption request we ever had for him, but we would have picked it anyway among a million others. Emma was Greek living in Switzerland and had followed Billy’s story since day one. We started exchanging emails and messages every day. I’d inform her on anything I knew or thought about what Billy was like, about what he loved or not and about how he’d behave in a new environment, I’d send her photos and videos of him playing with my dogs or taking walks or simply just sitting there being cute. Saying goodbye at the airport was one of the hardest things I ever had to do. I came back home crying and waiting for his flight to arrive. It seemed like forever. We skyped once they were home. I missed him so much already and yet I was so happy to finally see him where he belonged. nAnd then the first e mails and messages starting arriving, with photos and videos of Billy’s new life and details on his daily rutine and all the progress he was making. They allowed me to take a glimpse on his life and I felt so grateful. With every new detail and every new photo the memory of him would become so vivid and yet so distant. A lot of dogs came after him. Dogs I fostered and loved and helped. But as the months went by, Billy’s photos were still my desktop backround and and my mobile wallpapers and even my facebook cover. It was like while his memory was drifting further away I’d try to keep him as close as possible anyway I could. And finally, the reunion happened. I had been preparing for it for months. But Billy was always too special for anything you could ever plan or imagine about him. He did recognize me of course, he recognized my dogs and they were so happy to be together again they run off playing and doing whatever it is dogs do when they get along. He was so happy. A dog that had absolutely nothing to do not only with that hairless bag of bones I had fostered those first weeks, but not even with the healthy gorgeous animal I had given for adoption ten months ago. I kept looking at him, and even though I knew it was him, in a way it felt that he wasn’t. He had been completely formed and shaped by those two amazing people who adopted him and he was most definitely 100% their dog. I could finally see it. And I was so relieved.nSo this video is dedicated to Billy’s parents. This is Poppy the kitten. Poppy came to Small Miracles Cat and Dog rescue of Ellicott City, MD with severe nerve damage to her left front leg, and a bad abscess on her right. After several weeks of evaluation, it was determined that she would have to have the left leg amputated. The leg was amputated at 5pm on February, 15th, 2013, and the kitten was already purring and hopping into my lap by 8:30pm the same night. This video was taken around 10pm, and shows her amazing positive attitude, despite all her trouble. She truly is a little inspiration. This is Akali's first visit to the dog park after getting her shots she is 6 months old in this video and we had just adopted her. Her father is a beautiful purebred black and white Malamute and her mother is a gorgeous copper colored husky. Aurora is the Purebred Siberian Husky (proven via DNA) that we rescued from a horrible breeder when she was 12 weeks old she (at that time) had cuts fleas and was covered in sawdust in addition to having much more fear than a little puppy should have. She is now a perfect angel (obviously) This was shot with my cell phone (LG Revolution) so the quality is not all that wonderful. This was taken at the Bea Arthur dog park in the side that is meant for small dogs (the large dog side is closed on Tuesdays when this was shot). We were alone all morning but we stayed about 6 hours and by mid day tons of pups and their people showed up and the dogs had a wonderful time! (PS. our Scottish Terrier was at home with Adam, he wanted to sleep after a full night shift and I decided it would be best to leave her home being that I did not know how Akali would react to the dog park.)   Less

Like many of my canine friends here, my life was saved by City Dogs Rescue when my time had run out at a high kill, rural shelter in North Carolina. I'm a chocolate labrador retriever mix, and everyone always tells me how pretty I am! I'm a very sweet, gentle girl just looking for a loving home. I'm small and dainty, too, especially for a chocolate lab! My foster mom reports that I'm the sweetest little girl she's had in her home for fostering. She says I'm just an easy and enjoyable pup to have around. I'm house-trained and get along with my foster sister famously. I LOVE other dogs and would be so happy to have a home with other dogs so I can play! I am happiest outside, and I'd love a yard or a nearby park so I can romp around.
