The UN has appointed a new special envoy, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed as pressure grows to return to the negotiation table. More than 1,000 people have been killed in the conflict which began as Iran-backed Houthi militia swept the country forcing President Hadi to flee the country. A Saudi-led coalition began airstrikes to drive them back. There was no let up in the airstrikes in both Taez and Aden on Friday, despite announcing an end to their campaign which began one month ago. Concerns are rising over the growing humanitarian crisis in the country, as well as the presence of the Islamic State group, who appear to be taking advantage of the chaos in the country to expand their reach.   Less

Though its not sure how far the 40% abstention rate could impact the second round vote. Cyprus was split during a Turkish invasion in 1974. The discussions have been on hold since last October, when Greek Cypriots suspended their involvement in anger at perceived moves by Turkey to challenge their sovereign rights in exploring for natural gas. “The Cyprus issue has repeatedly become the ground for political showdowns. With peace talks on the horizon a few of the thousands of Yemenis stranded abroad have made it back to the capital Sana’a. Two planes: one from Egypt and one from India, arrived on Thursday. Daily flights are now planned until the end of the month providing relief for those stranded after the Saudi-led coalition imposed an air and sea blockade. One unidentified citizen spoke of the nightmarish conditions she endured in Egypt: “All 35 of us were scared in a room, without oxygen, every day we cried and there were four to five cases of illness. There were children among the ones who had heart problems and cancer and all kinds of things.” Meanwhile the United Nations announced that peace talks will begin on May 28 in Geneva. It is not yet clear who might represent the warring factions. The President of the internationally recognised government of Yemen, Abed-Rabbo Mansour Hadi, has been in exile in Saudi Arabia since the Houthi rebels overran the capital in a land-grab last year. He expressed surprise at the announcement of peace talks claiming he had not received an official invitation and it is too short notice. There is also the issue of Iran which has been accused of aiding the Shi’ite Musim rebels. A spokeman for Saudi Arabia said: “There is no place for Iran in the consultations in Geneva. They have not been playing a constructive role, and as such cannot be awarded by having a seat at the table.” Tehran denies the allegations and has announced it will allow one of its ships carrying 2,500 tonnes of food and medical supplies to be inspected by the UN in Djibouti before docking at the Houthi controlled Hodaida port. The voyage had threatened to escalate a regional confrontation over Yemen, in which Saudi Arabia and its Sunni Muslim allies have carried out almost two months of air raids on Houthi fighters.   Less

A group of 30 woman have crossed the demilitarized zone, which separates South and North Korea in a march for peace. The activists made the gesture to express the hope that Korean families divided by war could some day be reconciled. Janis Alton, one of the activists, made the following statement: “We women from North and South Korea and around the world are walking to invite all concerned to begin a new chapter in Korean history. One marked by dialogue, reconciliation, mutual understanding and respect and peaceful co-prosperity.” The woman had planned to walk through the abandoned “truce village” of Panmunjom, where the 1953 armistice that ended the war was signed, but South Korea declined permission and the women were ferried across the DMZ by bus. The peace protesters have come in for criticism for spending several days in Pyongyang while refusing to criticise the North Korean government over its human rights record. The pair met for about 50 minutes and it is understood the issue of Ukraine dominated with the men agreeing on the need to recreate a climate of dialogue. The Vatican said the pope told Putin that it was essential to resolve the “grave humanitarian situation” and allow aid into conflict areas. They also stressed the Minsk peace deal must be implemented to end fighting between Ukrainian government forces and pro-Russian separatist rebels., allegedly armed by Moscow. Putin met the pope after holding talks with the Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi at the Milan Expo. There too, many were expecting a response to Moscow’s role in the Ukraine crisis and its annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea region last year. But the Italian leader showed next to no sign of breaking ranks over European Union sanctions against Russia. The talks near the Pakistani capital ended with an agreement to meet again, after the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan. Turkish forces have launched airstrikes against Kurdish militants in northern Iraq, an escalation which puts a truce in place since 2013 into question. It comes amid fresh attacks on ISIL targets in Syria as Ankara attempts to create ‘safe zones’ in the war-torn country. Critics say President Erdogan is using the campaign against Islamic State as an excuse to crack down on Kurds. Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said that the aim was to launch a campaign against “all terrorist organisations”. Mentioning the PKK and ISIL, he said that they were all using their bases to plan attacks on Turkey. He added that the Turkish operations would “continue until their stockpile of weapons were destroyed”. Responding to the overnight raids, the PKK said on their website that the conditions for a cease-fire no longer existed. A representative of the PKK-affiliated HDP party in Turkey Shilan Eminoglu said that, “The Kurdish nation held itself and didn’t get involved in any fighting. But after all of that, today, we see that they are bombing our civilians and they put young people in jail from Istanbul to Julemerg for political reasons.” The PKK has been fighting Turkey for autonomy for 30 years, and is considered a terrorist organisation by Ankara and its allies. The waring parties are to be invited to take part in working groups on how to implement the 2012 road map to peace which calls for the formation of a transitional government. The suggestion of ‘working groups’ was made as the participants appear unready to hold formal peace talks. The diplomatic initiative comes against an increase in Syrian airstrikes which have been strongly condemned by the UN for their civilian casualties. “I am absolutely horrified by the total disregard for civilian life by all parties in this conflict. Attacks on civilians are unlawful, unacceptable and must stop,” said UN Humanitarian chief Stephen O’Brien speaking in Damascus. On Monday Syrian military bombarded an area northeast of Damascus keeping up its attack on a rebel-held district where around 100 people were killed on Sunday in an airstrike on a market. South Sudan’s president has finally signed a peace deal to end a 20-month conflict with rebels. President Salva Kiir had been threatened with UN sanctions if he delayed any longer. His rebel opponent signed last week. However at the ceremony Salva still expressed “serious reservations” over the compromise agreement and called for the support of regional leaders: “I warn you, you regional leaders to stand with us in the implementation,otherwise we may spoil it if it is left to us. There is now fighting today and that fighting is uncalled for.” Thousands of people have been killed since the conflict erupted in December 2013 after a power struggled between Reik Machar, an ethnic Nuer, and Salva Kiir, from the dominant Dinka group. The fighting has increasingly followed ethnic lines, unsettling an already volatile region. The deal which follows months of on-off negotiations, hosted by Ethiopia, and several broken ceasefires, is meant to end months of brutal civil war which will see rebel leader Riek Machar return as vice-president. During the 20 months of hostilities more than 2.2 million people have been from their homes in the world’s youngest state, which broke away from Sudan in 2011.
