This is a short little test I did on my roof. Not scientific by any means, and not everything matches because the light was fading fast and I didn't spend the time grading to match shot to shot. The only grading I did was add the film convert look and tweak contrast a little on a shot by shot basis. I also used a 3-way color wheel to pop skin tones and accentuate some of the cool fill light in the shadows. nnTHINGS I LEARNED: The film convert Red Profile works much better than the Alexa. I think the Alexa is slightly green usually and the Epic is slightly magenta usually. Which means when I used the Alexa Look Profile my image turned magenta. I think the F5 leans a little towards magenta similar to RED, so that profile worked best. Unfortunately they do not have an F5/55 specific Look Profile. nnAlso, film converts 3-way color wheel is very annoying to use. I do not recommend using that for adding contrast/adjusting colors. I used it for this, but found it very cumbersome...nnSETTINGS:nCAMERA: Sony F5nLENSES: Zeiss Contax Primes (35/2.8 & 50/1.4)nCODEC: HDCAM SR 4:4:4 RGBnFPS: 23.976nWB: 5500KnISO: 1250nVARIABLE F-STOPS & ND DEPENDING ON LIGHTnnFILM CONVERT SETTINGSnCamera Profile: Red Epic X RedGamma3 RedLogFilmnFilm Stock: Fuji SuperX 400n100% Filmn100% Curven0% Grain Less

If you work with video, it's vital to understand how codecs work and how they change your image. In this tutorial, I over all of the big concepts behind codecs, breaking it down into understandable pieces. While the nitty-gritty of compression algorithms can get complicated, all of the main ideas are quite simple.nnHere's an overview of the topics covered:nn - What a codec is - And how it differs from a container.n - Different types of codecs - And why I frequently use 4 different codecs on a single project.n - Bit Depth - What it means and why it matters.n - Chroma Subsampling - 4:4:4, 4:2:2, and 4:2:0, and when it becomes an issue.n - Spatial Compression and Blocking - One of the most common artefacts you see with normal work.n - Temporal Compression - Long-GOP codecs, inter-frame compression, and ALL-I codecs.n - Lossless vs. Lossy compression - How image compression differs from data compression.n - Bit Rate - How to calculate bit rates and the differences between kbps/kBps/Mbps/MBps.n - Raw - Briefly, the difference between Raw, compressed, and uncompressed video.nnTake a look at the companion post on Philipbloom.net as well! An introspective artist teaches med students and faculty to put down their scalpels and discover beauty in boxes of bones and body parts.nnProduced by Emon Hassan for Narratively's "Art in Strange Places Week" (March 13, 2014)nhttp://narrative.ly/art-in-strange-places/how-to-draw-a-human-heart/nnDescriptionnAfter being diagnosed with scoliosis at nine and undergoing spinal fusion surgery at thirteen, Laura Ferguson was bedridden for a year and given art classes to help pass the time. The deformity of her spine and the feeling of being "locked" within her body led young Ferguson to explore her inner space. For years she has found artistic inspiration by drawing from x-rays and CT scans. Today, as Teaching Artist at NYU School of Medicine's anatomy lab, Ferguson leads the "Art and Anatomy" class to medical students, faculty and staff to appreciate the beauty within, enabling them to look at bones, cadavers, and body parts in a new way. The class is administered by the school's Master Scholars Program in Humanistic Medicine.nnnnEmon Hassan, Narratively's Director of Video & Multimedia, is a New York-based filmmaker and photographer.
