Some of these were the Bell Trade Act, Parity Rights, Philippine Rehabilitation Act, Military Bases Agreement and Military Assistance Pact.nnWith the US support to the Philippines, westernization occurred. Culture during this period developed according to the ideological direction set by the US. This was secured by the Educational Exchange Program or the "Fulbright Program". nnA Merger of TraditionsnThe Taga-bukid and Taga-bayan were the two cultures that made up the political entities.nnExistentialism and the Search for Identity.nMarch 17, 1957, When Ramon Magsaysay died in a plane crash in Cebu, the country was under confusion and the people began to ask Recto for some answers regarding the country's political philosophy. However, Recto died in Rome due to a heart attack.nnAnother important writers in Filipino was the launching of the Palanca Memorial Awards headed by Carlos Palanca Sr. in 1950. Awards were given to writers of short stories, plays and poetry.nnnGrowing Militancy of National ConsciousnessnIn 1961, when Jose Maria Sison organized the Student Cultural Association of the University of the Philippines (SCAUP), anti-imperialist ideas of Recto were built as a basis of the militant nationalism. English literature, at that time, was more popular instead of Tagalog literature because it could only find space in campus publications. This period marked the struggle of young Filipino writers to put back Tagalog poetry and fiction rather than English writing which were composed of the elder writers. nnIn 1970, mass rallies and marches in public places as well as violence and deaths at mass actions were recorded and denounced in newspapers, radios and televisions. New songs and plays were created which carry messages of the nationalist movements.nnPanulat para sa Kaunlaran ng Sambayanan (PAKSA) which was a group of nationalist writers whose literature was political in content and intent came out was founded.nnThe Philippine Literature under the Martial LawnDuring 1972, With the nationalist movement gaining strength, and posing a threat to the government, President Ferdinand Marcos declared the country under Martial Law. Writers came up with songs and dramas that fired up the resistance and expose military abuses against citizens and struggle of the masses. They could no longer write freely which is why they went underground or in caves so that they can continue what they were doingnnMalayang Kilusan ng Bagong Kababaihan (MAKIBAKA). It is an organization of women whose purpose was to produce female literary artists and to spread feminist consciousness. Some of the female literary writers included were Lualhati Bautista, Joi Barrios and Rosario CruznnCultural presentations later became a vibrant socially conscious which also enjoyed profitability because of the interests of paying audiences. Terrynn"I first met Elana Katz though a mutual friend when I was traveling through Berlin in September of 2011. I had just come off a residency and a reaffirmation of my own practice. Once we had a moment to chat about our work, we noticed that our concepts were coming from the same place, the world around us and how societies and people engage with and treat one another. After going through her work more closely, I became more and more engaged; respecting and admiring the approach she takes to what some would say are sensitive topics. I create objects or images that speak to our culture, Elana creates experiences. She is what I would call a method-sculptor. Though her presentation is often performance-like, Elana personally investigates, researches and ultimately lives her work as it's being created and executed. Elana is one of the few artists I have encountered who confidently and courageously attacks subject matter from which most artists would shy away. Her performances and experiences are both emotionally and physically grueling while maintaining an aesthetic beauty, as you will see in her performance and installation at The Window at 125. It is my privilege to introduce Elana Katz."nn-David C. TerrynnElana Katz is an American artist currently based in Berlin, Germany. Working often from an historical basis, Katz's work confronts cultural conventions, critically examines the complexity that lies within contradictions, and thus aims to create an experience of unlearning the assumed. Her recent grants have included the DAAD Graduate Studies Scholarship for Germany (2010) and the Franklin Furnace Fund (2011). At the invitation of Marina Abramovic, she participated as a reperformer of the artist's works at Abramovic's 3 month retrospective at Museum of Modern Art in New York (2010). Other recent performances and exhibitions have taken place at Location One, New York, USA (2011) Content @ Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, Japan (2011), Musée Royaux des Beaux Arts de Belgique, Belgium (2011) and the Freies Museum Berlin, Germany (2012).nnDavid C. Terry is the Director of Programs/Curator at the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) where he oversees the Fellowships, Curatorial, Sponsorship and Learning Programs. Prior to coming to NYFA Mr. Terry was Assistant Director at the Pelham Art Center, where he directed the educational, exhibition and outreach programs. Mr. Terry earned his BA at the College of William and Mary, and while earning his MFA in Sculpture from the University of Pennsylvania, where Mr. Terry began his administrative, curatorial and teaching career.nnMr. Terry is a working artist, curator, juror, and a panelist for the New York State Council on the Arts, Bronx Council on the Arts, Westchester Biennale, the Alexander Rutsch Award in Painting, and the Woodstock Byrdcliffe Artist in Residence Program. Mr. Terry's awards include Artists in the Marketplace Program, The Bronx Museum of the Arts; BRIO, Bronx Council on the Arts; The Puffin Foundation; New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in Sculpture, and the Arts and Business Council's Arts Leadership Institute Award and the Elizabeth Foundation's Residency Grant. Mr. Terry was born and raised in Washington, D.C. and has been living in New York City for the past 17 years.nnThis piece will occupy The Window at 125 January 11-25th 2013nTo accompany the work in the window space, a celebration of each artist and the formal introduction will take place in the form of a conversation between the champion and artist.
