Part 2 of Cordy the Corgi meeting Lorne the wolf cub...nLorne is a ten week old (in this video) high content wolfdog. He was born at a zoo in Georgia who breeds a select number of wolf cubs to be used for educational purposes and for ambassadors for their species. Lorne's brother, Wyatt can be seen at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo, California. Lorne is being raised with the hope of using him in educational talks to raise awareness for an often misunderstood animal.nnLorne is a subspecies of the Grey (or Timber) Wolf. He was born in April (wolves are only born in the spring, unlike domesticated dogs) and until he came to me was used in meet-and-greets at the Georgia zoo. Two weeks ago he left on a trip across the United States from out West to Chicago. nnDuring his journey there he accidentally swallowed a small slip lead and had to have emergency surgery. The surgery was a success and as you can see from the video, Lorne is doing extremely well. The doctors could not believe how fast his recovery was. When he woke up from his surgery, he acted as if nothing had even happened! Ten days later after Lorne got some rest, we drove from Chicago back home to Arizona on a four day adventure. We stopped in many states and Lorne met many different people, things, and places. He has been introduced to sheep, since he was seven weeks old and has been around the herd daily. Today, under strict supervision I decided to put him in with a semi-dominant ram to gauge his reaction to him. The reason I chose this ram was because he was willing to stand up to Lorne, but was not overly aggressive and dangerous to him (such as Octavian would have been). Likewise, most of the Ewes would have been a poor choice and triggered a flight response in the sheep, which then may have triggered a chase drive in Lorne, which could have resulted in his predatory nature kicking in- whether he meant the sheep harm or not.nnWhat do you think of this very interesting video showing two natural enemies together? Do you think Lorne is simply trying to play with the ram? Or do you think he has other intentions?nnHis behavior here are very different from my previous results of him mixing with the sheep, which can be seen in the videos below. Despite media attention that wolves in the wild have stabilized their numbers, they are still very much at risk. Wolf hunting continues to persist, both legally and illegally. Wolves are still stigmatized in society, especially by farmers and ranchers who if merely seeing a wolf will on sight, no matter the threat. This mentality is hurting our intelligent friend, whose relationship and companionship led us to the domesticated dog we have today and love. Lorne visits with the public regularly and even though he's just a cub, he has instantly charmed his way into the hearts of many others who before misunderstood and feared one of our closest ties to the natural world.nnLorne is a subspecies of the Grey (or Timber) Wolf. It was a scary time, but thankfully today you wouldn't even know it ever happened (except for the constant reminder of paying off the bill!). nnI'm working with Lorne every day and I hope that he is able to continue to reach out to the public as he matures. It is common that wolves once establishing a territory upon reaching adulthood have trouble leaving it and feel much more comfortable at home than in strange places. Finding all of them unlocks the "Conservation" trophy / achievement.nBefore doing this you must fully upgrade the Capture Cage to grade 4! There are three ways to extract wild animals. The one you'll use the most is the capture cage. It randomly catches animals that live around the area where you placed the cage. The second tactic you'll use quite a bit is Fulton extracting them (for bigger animals). And the third option is to stun and pick up smaller animals that cannot be fulton extracted.nnThe golden rule for capture cages: Place all 8 of them in a circle next to each other and immediately leave the area via helicopter. When you begin at the landing zone, always call back the helicopter right away so you don't have to wait later. Do NOT go back to the ACC via the pause menu! You must extract via the helicopter so that the cages will capture animals.nMost animals have very specific and small habitats. Knowing those locations is the key to capturing them. This does, however, not always guarantee you capture the animal you want. Rarer animals may take a few tries to capture. If you don't get the animal you're looking for, simply return to the ACC and come back for another try.nnNone of the animals are missable. You can still get everything after the story and side ops are complete. She has braved neglect and the elements on her own only to end that journey in the confines of a local animal shelter.nnBut not for long… because she has ALL OF US :). nnEmaciated, and in a weakened state, Triumphant Tails, Inc. immediately took her under their wings to get her to Angel Animal Hospital to be examined. It was a struggle for Zena to even get to her feet or to stand there for long once she did. As an adult dog of her breed type, she should weigh between 50-60 lbs. Zena only weighs 23 lbs. – less than half of what her body weight should be.nnSevere anemia was getting the best of this sweet girl. A vitamin B complex injection was given. She was treated for intestinal parasites, too. The heartworms she is battling will have to be dealt with later on when Zena is strong enough, and well enough, to endure the treatments.nnAs Zena was at the vet clinic, we began networking her, praying that a rescue group would step for her so that she would not have to be returned to the small, overcrowded shelter she had just come from. Our prayers were answered when we received a message that *Reggie’s Friends* would happily give Zena a brand new start as long as a foster home could be found, and funding for her medical needs were secured.nnBy the Grace of God, two very dear friends of mine jumped into action by offering to take Zena in on a temporary basis until a longer-term foster home could be found. Zena will require a great deal of care these next couple of weeks with regular administration of her vitamins and small meals throughout the day. She will need to become acclimated to what “home life” truly is and adjust to having a high-quality diet and fresh water available to her. Her Foster Mom(s) were/are prepared to see her through (God Bless you, Sonya and Carolyn!).nnThe only thing needed now is funding to help Reggie’s Friends to be able to provide Zena with her ongoing medical needs and, ultimately, for her spay and heartworm treatment. The goal amount to help them to help her is $500. I would happily give them a million if I had it for their kindness in helping Zena! I’m sure many of you would, too. While most of us are robbing Peter to pay Paul much of the time, PLEASE consider forfeiting one of life’s small luxuries that you would normally afford yourself… and offer it to Zena instead.nnI can’t imagine the pain and heartache this dog has lived through over the past three years of her life. While searching around a densely wooded area – the trees part and a somewhat sandy clearing emerges. Before the American Dingo stands a slightly larger Australian Dingo. It has been 2 days since the Dingo has eaten – it is irritated and hungry.nnQuickly, the AUS Dingo begins to circle the Carolina Dog – growling menacingly as it eyes its new prey. The Carolina Dog takes a defensive position, caught off guard but the sudden aggression of this foreign dog. The AUS Dingo, blind with starvation lunges at the Carolina Dog, its jaws snapping air. The Carolina Dog has been able to side leap and barely miss a death blow. Taking the defensive, it snaps back, catching the shoulder of the AUS Dingo. Now wounded, the AUS Dingo has begun darting wildly at Carolina Dog – confusing its target and putting the dog on its heels. The Carolina Dog begins to retreat. Sensing the Carolina Dog in a vulnerable position the AUS Dingo lunges – using it’s slightly longer sneak and snout – and damages the hind legs of the Carolina Dog. Yelping in pain, the Carolina Dog goes down on its hind legs. Darting to the other side before the Carolina Dog can turn its head – its neck is left exposed and the AUS Dingo closes in. With its strong front jaw and long canine teeth the AUS Dingo bites into the Carolina Dog’s neck and locks. The Carolina Dog feebly struggles to survive while calling out. The Carolina Dog’s demise is imminent and as it succumbs to the AUS Dingo’s bite, it’s pack can be heard barking in the distance – coming to the rescue of its fallen member…. Less

Ben and BambinThis is the real life Bambi story you’ve been waiting for. Svetlana Harper happened to find a poor little fawn on the side of the road who was laying next to the body of her dead mother. Harper brought the baby deer home and cared for it, nursing it back to health. When Bambi’s health was finally stable enough, Harper started to introduce her to other animals. Bambi instantly became best friends with Harper’s pet rabbit Ben and the two have been best friends ever since.nn8. Themba and Albertn Themba was a just a baby when he lost his mother and the veterinarians at the Shamwari Game Reserve prayed that another elephant would eventually adopt him. None of them would allow poor Themba to nurse. The team cared for him with constant attention but he became too depressed and eventually stopped eating. It was then that Themba was introduced to a sheep on a nearby farm named Albert. At first, there was hesitation but the two would later become the best of friends and Albert would return to eating. nn7. Owen and MzeenA tsunami had managed to separate a hippo named Owen from his parents and was swept away by the strong tide. Wildlife rangers at an animal sanctuary in Kenya took in the young hippo and placed him in the same pen with a 100-year-old turtle named Mzee. Owen became so attached to the tortoise that he acted like it was his mother and would often act as a protector if someone got too close to Mzee. Owen stayed with Mzee up until 2007 when he was introduced with the other hippos. nn6. A Deer and a Goosen This next story isn’t really about a friendship but more like a partnership. Back in 2011, a goose happened to lay her eggs in an urn at the Forest Lawn cemetery in Buffalo. It was some time later that this male deer appeared and began to stand guard over the soon-to-be-mother. When strangers would try to get near the goose the deer would make sure that they wouldn’t get too close. This went on for three weeks until the eggs hatched and the deer slipped back into the forest. nn5. Anjana and Tiger CubsnIt was during a hurricane that these two baby white tigers were split from their mother after her pen had flooded. Thankfully they were rescued and taken in by an animal reserve here in the U.S. They’re being cared for by caretaker China York and her chimpanzee named Anjana. Anjana has raised several different types of animals so this is no sweat for her. nn4. Koko and All Balln Koko the gorilla is perhaps one of the most famous primates to be studied in all of history. She’s known for her amazing ability to speak through means of American Sign Language. It was back in 1984 when she asked her caretakers if she could get a pet cat and picked out a gray one that she named All Ball. Koko was a great owner, unfortunately, All Ball was killed by a car in an accident and Koko became very distressed. Since then, she’s owned many more pets. nn3. Milo and Bonediggern When bonedigger was just a small lion cub, he was diagnosed with having a metabolic bone disease that would eventually leave him disabled. It was around the same time that this little dachshund named Milo took Bonedigger under his care. After all those years, the 500-pound lion is still the bffs with 11-pound Milo and two other dogs named Bullet and Angel.nn2. Chito and Pochon This man named Gilberto “Chito” Shedden from Costa Rica came across a crocodile one day and noticed that he had been shot in the eye and left to die. Chito took the large reptile back to his home and nursed the crocodile back to health. When he was strong enough, Chito tried to release the croc but it wouldn’t leave and instead followed him back home. Chito named him Pocho and they would spend the next 20 years together. Sadly, Pocho passed away in 2011 at the age of 50 due to natural causes. nn1. Shere Khan, Baloo, and Leon This trio of friendship spanning through three different species of animals is nothing short of remarkable. The three animals were held captive by a drug dealer that would severely abuse them. Baloo the bear had a harness that grew into his skin because it was never adjusted and caused deformities. These days they live together at the Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary here in the U.S. and have become inseparable because of what they experienced. Less

Every day at least ten people are maimed, or worse, by stepping on a landmine--war remnants left over from military conflicts of the past. An estimated 60 countries still contain explosives, which are littered profusely throughout the land. Human attempts of rooting them out are limited, which is why these rats are infinitely helpful in the security of the people who live there. Although this can be dangerous for the rats, they are often small enough not to set off any of the explosives, since land mines often react to pressure or tripwires. nn7. Seeing-eye Mini Horsesn Most of us have heard of seeing-eye dogs, but miniature horses are known to do the job equally as well. These horses are usually under three feet tall, which is why “miniature horse” is a suitable name. Because of their small size, blind people can go just about anywhere with their adorable companions. Horses are also very loyal and won’t abandon their caretakers to chase a bird or rabbit scurrying nearby like dogs sometimes do.nn6. Messenger Pigeonsn Pigeons have been used by humans for over 3000 years to relay information to other people at long distances. We haven’t always had the luxury of making quick phone calls or sending emails to communicate with someone far away, so we had birds to do the job for us. Birds have the unique ability to return to their home nests by use of an internal sense called magnetoception, which allows them to detect magnetic fields to perceive location and direction. A person could utilize a bird's navigation system to send a written letter to a correspondent up to 1000 miles away, and they would receive the message in only a few days. nn5. U.S. Coast Guard Caninesn The U.S. Coast Guard has trained canines, referred to as “Canine Coasties,” to carry out explosive detection and rescue missions. The dogs must complete their helicopter proficiency training before being deployed on their first assignment. The canines are equipped with safety goggles, ear muffs, and vests to protect them from ocean spray, engine noise, and flying debris. Dogs are loyal companions and love to help out any way they can, forming close bonds with their owners in the Navy. Let’s all thank our canine allies for keeping our coastlines safe and secure.nn4. Military Sea Lions nThe U.S military has recognized the intelligence and proficiency of sea lions and dolphins to carry out intricate, underwater tasks, so the Navy Marine Mammal Program was funded to put their abilities to good use. The program trains sea lions and dolphins to carry out tasks, like rescuing lost naval swimmers, disarm underwater mines, protect harbors, and recover military equipment. There has been some controversy over the treatment of these animals and the risk factors involved, but the military assures us they are well cared for.n n3. Manhunting CrowsnMuch like humans, crows have the ability for facial recognition, and can remember people they’ve encountered in the past. The U.S. military thought of a clever use for these intelligent birds--to track down wanted individuals. In 2011, the U.S. military funded research to facilitate networks of crows to gain information on the whereabouts of Osama Bin Laden. Although Bin Laden wasn’t officially discovered by a crow, the research and information gained from studying these birds can be useful for future military gains.nn2. Coal Mine CanariesnHistorically, coal mines are known to be dangerous places, creating hostile environments for humans. However, industrialized nations depend on coal for many reasons, so the extraction of the organic mineral often requires plummeting to the depths of underground mines. Canaries have been used in the past to test the safety of mines, to make sure coal chambers aren’t filled with noxious gasses. If the canary passes out in the mine, the workers know that it is filled with poisonous fumes. I don’t think the canaries would view their application favorably.nn1. Service FerretsnWe’ve already covered service horses on this list, and service dogs are well-known, but service ferrets are what’s new and happening. Ferrets are being used as therapeutic animals by owners with mental disabilities. They can aid in treating patients with anxiety, stress, and depression by providing comfort when times get rough. Ferrets are burrow animals, so they will often cuddle up next to their owners when sleeping in their bed. Ferrets can also remind ill patients to take their medication and can be trained to wake sleeping owners when they have seizures or panic attacks, preventing or disrupting these harmful behaviors.
