Khalessi is a two year old pit mix that weighs only twenty pounds. She has no nasal cavity and is missing part of her upper jaw due to a past trauma. She has old fractures to her pelvis and limited use of her rear legs. We can only imagine the nightmare that she has lived thru, she was dumped in someone's yard and reported to local animal services. Orange County Animal Services asked for help for her and we gladly stepped up for her. She is going to need several surgeries and therapy to help her repair and regain use of her legs. She will need dental work as several of her teeth have exposed roots from the area of missing bone in her jaw. She just decided that was where she was going to stay until we came to get her.'nnShe suspects Maggie wriggled her way out of a small opening of her kennel's door, made for holding a water dish, after she heard the pups crying.nnAldred returned to the facility, where she was greeted by an ecstatic Maggie. Aldred told the news channel: 'She was really happy, and then she took me back to their room as if to say: "I really need to meet these puppies."'nnAldred opened the cage and watched as Maggie nuzzled the puppies and cuddled with them throughout the night.nnAldred said: 'They were just all so happy to be together. The puppies needed her and she needed them. It was pretty perfect.'nnDeanna Thompson of the Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society said she wasn't surprised by Maggie's escape. She told ABC 11: 'It's innate in a lot of female dogs, especially if they've had a litter in the past. He was injured at one of his paws and the wound was still bleeding when we rescued him, leaving small blood spots on the pavement. He had also some other old scars on his legs. Some kindhearted people used to feed him whenever they saw him around. She is very sweet and affectionate and knows some basic cues such as sit, down, give paw and responds very well to all of them. I was driving home from work by the frozen water hole near my home, and spotted a dogs shivering white face on the ice ... he was neck deep under water on the opposite side of the small pond about sixty feet away. he was not making a sound.. or moving at all ... but. I could see him shivering and that meant alive... I instantly called the local Fire Department then I began to make my way around the half frozen watering hole thru tons of wild thorn bushes and to the dog... thankfully the FD took (at most) 3 minutes to arrive and they met me on the other side ... the dog seemed defeated , he did not have much fight left in him. I am very thankful and appreciative that our local Fire department and animal rescue services are ready to respond so quickly I don't know who's dog this is because he had no collar, but I hope they are happy to see him come home tonight. 3 different vids of this story PART#1, PART#2, PART#3   Less

The child, named Julia, went missing overnight on Friday from the small town of Pierzwin, in western Poland. She had last been seen playing with the small black mongrel on the same day. A search party of firefighters, police officers, rescue workers and residents scoured the area through the night and the child was eventually found the following morning, several kilometres from her home, with the dog by her side. She was heard calling for her mother. Firefighter Grzegorz Szymanski said Julia would probably not have survived the night had it not been for the dog's warmth. "For the whole night the animal was with the girl, it never left her. Remember, it was five degrees below zero and the child was wet," he said. The child, named Julia disappeared with her pet dog from a village in western Poland. Approximately 250 firefighters, police, rescue personnel and nearby residents joined forces to search for the toddler. A helicopter with infrared cameras and search dogs were also deployed to find her. Julia was discovered the next day in a marshland with her loyal dog right by her side. Amazingly she survived frigid temperatures as low as 23 degree Fahrenheit throughout the night. The dog was reported to have kept her warm. She was taken to a local hospital but was said to be doing fine. In a similar report from last year, a 10-year-old boy with Down Syndrome, Kyle Camp disappeared from his Alabama home. The next morning, a male searcher discovered the young boy alive, in the woods with four puppies around him. He stated "Those puppies kept him company, they kept him warm and comfortable." Witness Eduardo Candelier, who works at a nearby tire shop, ran toward the dog to pull it off the girl. "The dog was biting her," said Candelier. "The girl was crying, she was going crazy." No one realized the attack was caught on tape until the owner of the tire shop, Fred Paulino, checked his security video Monday morning. "You can see the dog is walking around with the girl in her mouth," said Paulino. The girl was taken to the hospital and treated for minor injuries, including small puncture wounds to her right arm and right leg. She was treated and released. The child, Nina Boyett along with her aunt and a family friend discovered the mom and a puppy and knew they had to do something to save them. The mother dog had already gone into labor and had a litter of puppies under the barn. The family along with a rescue organization was able to get the adult canine out safely but 10 puppies were left under the structure. Unfortunately 9 of the puppies were dead, but there was one remaining survivor. Everyone could hear that sole pup yelping and Nina volunteered to help. There was an exceptionally tiny crawlspace under the barn. Given that very few adults could fit in the space, Nina got down on her belly and crawled to retrieve the pup and bring it to safety. The second grader was very calm as she brought the small pooch to her family and rescuers. The female puppy is doing great and has been named ‘Princess Nina’. The mother dog was also rescued and is said to be in good health.   Less

May 3rd, a cow elk has fallen through the ice on Hebgen Lake. Patrick Daigle, of Blue Ribbon Flies in West Yellwstone, along with a small group of concerned locals, Jake with Mt dept of transportation and Chuck to help facilitate the rescue. With the group of passers assembled, a few calls were made and a rescue operation was set in motion. The ice is still plenty thick and can hold multiple people, but in a few spots, underwater springs have weakened some areas which cannot be spotted by the elk. The cow elk seemed a little banged up, two dogs were reportedly biting at here ears when she was first spotted, and her shin was visibly raw from trying to free herself. All in all, she at least has a chance and we hope that she has warmed up in todays afternoon sun!!! I kept running out of memory, I was more concerned for the elk, and I was more concerned for me so sorry for the less than perfect video. The dogs were kept as many as four to a crate, and the crates averaged only 20" long by 13" wide by 11" tall in size. The crates were so small that many of the tiny dogs were unable to stand up straight.nnWhen questioned, the owner stated that the SPCA was taking her money and that she could "sell the puppies for $2,000 in Carmel."nnThe dogs and puppies will undergo emergency examinations by SPCA veterinarians, and receive lots of TLC from compassionate SPCA staff.nnWe are thankful to the many Monterey residents who reported this case and her various locations to the SPCA as the situation was mobile, the suspect had been actively evading humane officers.nnWhen purchasing a puppy, always research the breeder, meet the parents, see where they puppies are raised, and ask for veterinary records so that you do not support neglectful, inhumane breeders.   Less
