Some people also think that swimming is a skill that all dogs naturally have. Why would they call it the "doggie paddle" unless it was something all canines could do? But swimming isn't necessarily an innate ability for dogs. While many pooches are perfectly amphibious, many of man's best friends tend to sink like a sack of bricks when submerged. For these dogs, keeping their heads above water is about as easy as keeping their noses away from other dog's rear ends. In other words, it's pretty much impossible.nnWhen it comes to swimming, canines generally fall into one of three categories. There are those that can swim, those that can be taught to swim and those that should steer clear of all aqueous environments. Water spaniels, golden retrievers, Irish setters, English setters, and the water-loving Newfoundland fall into the first category -- all excellent swimmers. This is mainly because of their strong limbs, but this ability may also be in their genes. Many were bred specifically to retrieve waterfowl or for water rescue. Each of these dogs has a strong tradition of swimming within the breed and generally enjoys being in water.nnAt the other end of the spectrum are the low and lovable sturdy breeds like bulldogs, dachshunds and boxers. There simply isn't enough thrust from their short legs to keep them afloat in aquatic environments. Breeds that have short faces, such as the pug, also have a very hard time swimming since they fatigue easily. Small dogs such as the Maltese and Chihuahua are sometimes good swimmers, but may become easily chilled or frightened in the water, which can increase the risk of drowning.nnSome dogs may have the physical capacity to swim, but have a mortal fear of the water nonetheless. These animals tend to panic when submerged. For a dog in water, panic quickly leads to fatigue, which makes drowning much more likely. That spells bad news for you and your pet. When a dog is frightened in the water, he will attempt to climb on top of you, kicking and scratching until you manage to get to land (if you're teaching your dog to swim, bring a pup-appropriate life preserver). An animal's individual temperament is also an important factor in whether he can swim. Some dogs don't even like to go out in the rain, let alone go swimming.nnAnd if your dog isn't a canine version of Michael Phelps, don't despair. You can still enjoy water fun with a land-loving lapdog. Assuming your pet actually enjoys being submerged, there are many different life vests and jackets that can keep your pooch safe and sound in the pool or pond. A Maltese military aircraft spotted the vessel in distress about 60 nautical miles south of Lampedusa and Italian and Maltese military services have been working around the clock to save the panicked survivors. After a ten-hour journey aboard a Maltese vessel the survivors arrived at Malta's Valetta Port. The ship was carrying 19 women, 15 children and four bodies. On Saturday the Italian navy said that so far 206 people had been rescued and 34 bodies have been retrieved from the sea.nnIt is the second migrant boat tragedy in the region this month, after 339 people lost their lives on October 3 after their vessel sank near Lampedusa. According to the UN High Commisioner for Refugees 32,000 people have arrived in Italy and Malta this year. Also disingenuously referred to as fur "ranches," these facilities are more akin to industrialized torture camps.nnOn U.S. fur farms, one of the most frequently used methods of killing animals is electrocution: the "farmer" puts a metal clamp in an animal's mouth, a metal rod in the anus, and sends a high-voltage current surging through the body. Sometimes the power surge forces the rod out of the anus, so the procedure must be repeated to kill the animal. Other commonly-employed techniques include homemade gas chambers, such as a box hooked up to a tractor exhaust pipe; lethal injection of various chemicals that kill through paralysis, which can result in immobilized animals being skinned alive; and neck breaking.nnTo cut costs, fur farmers pack animals into small cages, preventing them from taking more than a few steps back and forth. This crowding and confinement is especially distressing to minks—solitary animals. The anguish and frustration of life in a cage leads minks to self-mutilate—biting at their skin, tails, and feet—and frantically pace and circle endlessly and may result in cannibalism to escape the other minks. The minks are born and die this way. They are slaughtered every year in November to be processed for winter coats. It takes between 30-70 Mink to make ONE coat- depending upon size.nnThis mink was saved when viewers donated money toward rescuing a ranch ostrich (a project which was not successful this year, but will be put on hold to next). The left over money was used to pull this baby mink from the farm and save him from this horrible fate. Minks are slaughtered every November to be processed for winter coats- but he will not be one of them. He will get to experiences all the joys of life.
