The haunting truth behind the lyrics of Nature Boy by Nat King Cole The lyrics and melody of Nature Boy originally sung and recorded by Nat King Cole in 1947 included a full orchestra which took this captivating songs melody and nostalgic lyrics to an almost enchanting level. But the song Nature Boy was not written by Cole himself and the story behind how he got the song is somewhat mind boggling. What makes the story of Nature Boy’s lyrics so haunting is the fact that the writer was not a prominent or wealthy individual. Nature Boy was actually the work of a man by the name of “eden abhez” who started out as George McGrew. This 33 year old musician started out as a piano player in LA working in a restaurant on Larel Canyon Boulevard owned by German immigrants; John and Vera Richter who followed a philosophy known as “Naturemensch” and “Lebensreform”. Followers of this movement were generally known as Nature boys and were distinguished by their long beards and hair and the fact that they only ate raw fruit and vegetables. Enthralled by their lifestyle McGrew took on the philosophy and changed his name and while living this “hippy lifestyle” he wrote the song “Nature Boy” as a tribute to Bill Pester who was his mentor; although the song also had elements of an autobiography. Ahbez was encouraged to approach Nat King Cole, however his manager at the time refused ahbez access to Mr. Cole; it was through Cole’s valet that Nature Boy’s sheet music finally reached Cole. Nat King Cole loved the song and started playing it for live audiences before he even recorded it; but had to first track down the elusive song writer eden ahbez for permission. The songwriter was finally found living under the Hollywood Sign where he gave Cole permission to record the song. But it is the absolute truth and sense of that age old meaning of life that seems to permeate the lyrics of Nature Boy that truly make it a time old classic as the message is relevant even in today’s life. The line “the greatest thing you’ll ever learn, is just to love and be loved in return” is what makes Nature Boy a universal song that appeals to every generation both young and old and why it has been able to captivate some of the world’s best artists such as Frank Sinatra; Sara Vaughn; Cher; Celine Dion; and Tony Bennett’s jazz collaboration with Lady Gaga. When you have artists such as Lady Gaga who usually only does songs that have a commercial appeal to them; do a song with the emotional attachment of Nature Boy, it really brings the full influence of the song to life and shows that this is a song that is able to continue “very far, over land and sea” as per the lyrics for as long as everyone will listen. Numerous versions have been recorded and several versions have been used in movies such as Moulin Rouge; Angel Eyes and The Talented Mr. Ripley. It started being featured in movies in 1948 when the original version was used for the movie The Boy with Green Hair. Although the songwriter may have started out as a homeless vagabond, thanks to Nat King Cole taking his haunting lyrics and putting his traditional smooth voice to it, the song became a time old classic that inspires even the youngest of souls to long for more. No matter who sings the lyrics of Nature Boy; it’s the melody that seems to always make the song strike a chord with the meaning of the song. It has the ability to also evoke questions as to who the true Nature Boy really was; and how did he go away; did he die and if so what caused his death? The song Nature Boy has such a deep and almost sad tale that it makes sense that everyone can relate to the emotions of the song and the true essence that drives this phenomenally written song. Nature boy is one of those songs that have been able to bridge the divide between race, color and generations to always deliver a poignant message of how nothing is as powerful as “love” and life’s true meaning and value can only be found in true love.
