I had a bit of extra time so I figured I'd make things easier for my future self by writing songs for him to be able to sing. This one's for my wife.nnLyrics:nI didn't know you when I wrote this song,nSo the details are slightly wrong,nI didn't know the colour of your hair,nOr all the kooky clothes you'd wear,nOr any of the things you should really know when you write a song about someone,nnIt would be freaky if I'd known that much,nAnd this would have a kinda stalker touch,nSo I kept matters short and sweet,nSo that when we turned out to meet,nI didn't reject you on the basis that you'd contradict these words,nnAt the time this song didn't make much sense,nAnd it was difficult to stay past tense,nBut I'm sure - I was sure - that the meaning will - would - become clear,nThat past me just wanted present you to know that present me is glad you're here,nnAnd I'm sure that you're following so far,nBeing the beautiful, intelligent woman you are,nI felt like that line was quite safe, 'cos even if it's not true,nI kinda have to say it now because I've made a lifelong commitment to you.nnIf you are someone who I knew back when,nI wrote this song that's pretty cool but then,nSorry 'bout that first line,nDidn't realise you'd be mine,nAnd I didn't want my wife to think I'd considered one of my friends as a potential wife,nnAnd it never really occurred to me,nThat we would get married eventually,nI always thought you were great,nBut just to reiterate,nI didn't have any particular one of my friends in mind when I wrote this bit,nnYou are the love of my life, darling,nYou are my one and only wife, darling,nAnd I hope the way I wrote this isn't too big an issue,nWhen I tell you from my heart that I'm so happy that I married you.nnThe way I did this really restricted me,nTo speculation and light comedy,nIt could never really sum up our love,nnGood thing, then, that I wrote another one,nMore sentimental, but not quite as fun,nBecause I love you, and not just to be consistent with what I said I'd do,nIn a song I wrote, aged 22,nnAnd that one's a whole lot more sincere because,nI knew who the subject of my lyrics actually was,nAnd it said how great it felt on the day you said 'I do',nAnd I meant it when I said I'm so happy that I married you,nnAlthough of course all of this is conditional on your actual existence which at the time of writing hadn't yet been established, by which I don't mean your existence, I mean the existence of a future wife of mine - I hope that your existence had been established otherwise you're probably a bit too young for me.
