See more architecture and design movies at http://www.dezeen.com/moviesnnShow director Deborah Spencer and creative director Michael Sodeau take us through their highlights of designjunction 2013 in this movie Dezeen filmed during London Design Festival. nndesignjunction took place from 18 to 22 September 2013 in the industrial building of a former postal sorting office on New Oxford Street in London.nn"We feel it breaks the mould of the traditional trade show," says Spencer. "We're in the heart of central London, in a derelict building that hasn't been used for the last ten years. It's a really interesting back-drop and it presents design in a much more interesting light."nnSpread over three floors, designjunction showcased a range of furniture and lighting products by both young designers and established brands from the UK and abroad.nnIn the movie we speak to exhibitors including London designer Paul Cocksedge, who was launching his Vamp gadget that plays music wirelessly through vintage speakers, Eero Koivisto of Swedish studio Claesson Koivisto Rune, who was presenting a new range of wicker lamps, as well as Patrzia Moroso of Italian furniture brand Moroso, which provided the furniture for the VIP lounge.nnThe show also featured pop-up shops, bars and restaurants, as well as live manufacturing on site.nn"I wanted exhibitors and visitors to feel that they could spend a full day here," explains Michael Sodeau, creative director of the show. "The idea was to create a rhythm within the building, so it's almost like different districts."nn"On the ground floor we have the pop-up shops and street food. Then on the first floor we move up to more exhibitions, slightly more open spaces and then up onto the second floor where we have brands and a more exclusive restaurant and bar."nnSpencer says one of her personal highlights of this year's show was the Flash Factories area on the ground floor, which featured live demonstrations of various manufacturing techniques, from 3D printing and CNC routing to the production of hand-made bicycle saddles by British manufacturer Brooks.nn"We've got this really strong contrast between craft-making and future digital technology," she says.nnThis year also featured a new lighting section on the first floor called lightjunction.nn"We've brought over a whole host of international brands that haven't shown in the UK for many, many years," Spencer explains.nnShe adds: "On top of that we've got these really strong eateries. So you'll see Jamie Oliver's Barbecoa and there's a Sodastream bar on the ground floor offering complimentary drinks."nnSpencer claims that it is the variety on offer that sets designjunction apart from other design shows.nn"We're more than just an exhibition," she says. See more movies at www.dezeen.com/movies.nnThis movie shows how a redundant World War Two bunker in The Netherlands was turned into a sculptural visitor attraction by slicing it down the middle to reveal its insides.nnThe bunker was built in 1940 to shelter up to 13 soldiers during bombing raids and the intervention by Dutch studios and Atelier de Lyon reveals the small, dark spaces inside, which are normally hidden from view.nnThe movie shows a diamond wire saw being used to cut a straight section through the centre of the monolithic concrete structure, and a crane lifting it away to create a narrow slit.nnIt took 40 days to slice through the solid concrete bunker, which is one of 700 constructed along the New Dutch Waterline, a series of water based defences used between 1815 and 1940 to protect the cities of Muiden, Utrecht, Vreeswijk and Gorinchem.nn"Our aim with the project was to question the policies on monuments by doing this intervention," Rietveld told Dezeen, adding that subsequently to completing the project, the bunker was elevated from a municipal monument to a national monument and is now part of the New Dutch Waterline's bid for UNESCO World Heritage status.nnThe designers also constructed a set of stairs to connect the nearby road to a path that leads through the centre of the bunker onto a wooden boardwalk raised above the flooded area.nn"The pier and the piles supporting it remind them that the water surrounding them is not caused by e.g. the removal of sand but rather is a shallow water plain characteristic of the inundations in times of war," said Rietveld in a statement about the project.nnVisible from the busy A2 motorway, the bunker is part of a 20-year masterplan begun in 2000 to transform the Dutch Waterline into a national park. It was completed in 2010 but was officially opened last year and recently won the Architectural Review Award 2013 for Emerging Architecture.nnHere's a project description from RAAAF:nnBunker 599nnIn a radical way this intervention sheds new light on the Dutch policy on cultural heritage. At the same, it time makes people look at their surroundings in a new way. The project lays bare two secrets of the New Dutch Waterline (NDW), a military line of defence in use from 1815 until 1940 protecting the cities of Muiden, Utrecht, Vreeswijk and Gorinchem by means of intentional flooding.nnA seemingly indestructible bunker with monumental status is sliced open. The design thereby opens up the minuscule interior of one of NDW’s 700 bunkers, the insides of which are normally cut off from view completely. In addition, a long wooden boardwalk cuts through the extremely heavy construction. It leads visitors to a flooded area and to the footpaths of the adjacent natural reserve.
