The bionic Lego skates were built so Blade, who weighs 127 grammes (4 ounces), can roll about wherever he wishes. Inspired by his son's Legos, veterinarian Dr. Carsten Plischke built the skates for Blade and glued it firmly to the bottom of the turtle's shell finding that Blade could not only move about in a way that wasn't possible before, but that the terrapin can also slowly rebuild leg muscle as a result of the physical modification. Plischke said that Blade developed an illness relating to bone metabolism, which resulted in his legs becoming too weak to move him about when weighed down with his heavy shell. The Lego mobility modification comprises six total pieces, including four small tyres with treads. Although Lego is best known for its plastic building blocks, the Danish toy company is also the world's largest tyre manufacturer, producing over 381 million miniature tyres in 2011. The Russian currency and share prices strengthened after the finance ministry said it would use its foreign currency reserves to support the rouble on top of what the central bank is doing, Even though it turned out the ministry was only talking about $7 billion of money it had left over in its budgets before the end of the year, it was enough to help boost the rouble slightly. The Moscow RTS index also bounced back a bit, finished Wednesday’s session up 14.4 percent. However the situation remains extremely volatile amid fears of a prolonged crisis. Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev met government and central bank officials on Wednesday along with major exporters – mostly energy firms. Afterwards he said: “What we are seeing today is mainly emotional games. It is in our interests to bring order to the markets, no citizen, nor any bank or any industry gains from instability.” He added there was no need for limits to be imposed on currency exchange. But the plummeting rouble has sent many Russians running to the shops to buy expensive imported items like electronics in anticipation of price hikes. They are driven by memories of the 1998 Russian financial crisis, when the currency collapsed within a matter of days. One shopper said: “We just bought several electronic devices: a washing machine which previously sold for 30,000 rouble now costs 38,000.” Another added: “You absolutely should spend your money now. This is the time.” Swedish furniture giant IKEA – like many firms that import their products – said it will put up its prices on Thursday which saw the aisles packed on Wednesday afternoon. While Apple halted online sales in Russia as fluctuations in the value of the rouble made it impossible to price its products. It is a result that some fear could jeopardise Greece’s international bailout. Parliament has failed to choose a new president, rejecting the ruling coalition’s nominee for the post, the former European Union commissioner Stavros Dimas. The country now faces early elections, as required under Greek law, and that is expected within the next month. This is dangerous for the Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and his conservative centre-left coalition. Leading the opinion polls is the left-wing Syriza party, which is vowing to renegotiate Greece’s international bailout and roll back controversial austerity measures. Euronews correspondent in Athens Giannisis Stamatis said most observers saw the snap election as a referendum: either continue with economic reforms agreed to with the EU and the IMF, or go on a collision course with international creditors. Greek share prices slumped on news of the snap election, with a knock-on effect in other European stock markets. The IMF says discussions with Greece on carrying out a review on the country’s bailout will resume once a new government is in place. Stavros Dimas fell short of the 180 vote majority needed to become president. In a third and final round of voting, Dimas scored 168 votes, the same result he achieved in the 2nd round. The coalition needed the support of smaller parties and independents, but the ruling coalition failed to get the numbers despite weeks of campaigning and lobbying. Meetings had been held over the weekend with some independent MPs, but media reports had already cited coalition sources as saying achieving the target would be difficult. Ruling party officials had also denied some reports that the government had been in talks with lawmakers from the right-wing Golden Dawn party, which is under investigation by the police. Dimas was quoted as saying that under no circumstances would he accept to be elected president with votes from Golden Dawn. Samaras says he will see the outgoing president, Karolos Papoulias, on Tuesday, and will seek an election as soon as possible. Officials have said the earliest date in terms of practicalities and logistics is January 25, but some earlier reports said a more likely date was early in February. One recent opinion poll over the weekend put Syriza ahead of Samaras’ New Democracy party by 3.3 points. The markets have been jittery over fears the EU and IMF bailout could be derailed by Syriza coming to power.
