See more architecture and design movies at http://www.dezeen.com/moviesnnArchitect David Kohn explains how his studio transformed a neglected Barcelona apartment into World Interior of the Year 2013 in this exclusive video interview Dezeen filmed at Inside Festival in Singapore. nnCarrer Avinyó by London studio David Kohn Architects is a renovated apartment in a triangular block in Barcelona's Gothic Quarter.nn"The apartment is in a nineteenth-century apartment block on a very cute corner, but it was in a pretty poor state of repair," Kohn explains.nn"It was subdivided into many small rooms so there was no gathering space, nor was there any sense of this rather unusual triangular plan and it's relationship to the city."nn"There was all this potential, but it was all held back by the architecture."nnTo rectify this, Kohn's studio stripped away most of the apartment's internal partitions, creating an open-plan living space to make the most of the large windows and high ceilings.nn"We wanted to change the apartment to focus on the pleasure of gathering," explains Kohn. "The architecture of the apartment now is about creating the right setting for that kind of social encounter."nnTwo of the bedrooms are contained within a wooden tower at one end of the apartment, which Kohn describes as "a kind of scale replica" of a 1950s apartment block by Spanish architect Josep Antoni Coderch in the La Barceloneta neighbourhood of the city.nn"The bedrooms in this tower block have louvred windows so when you want to go to bed you can close the building," he says.nnThe apartment's most striking feature is its tiled floor, which is made up of 25 different triangular designs.nn"We basically did research on how we can make a tiled floor using traditional technologies that would be affordable for this project, but introduced something new," says Kohn.nn"We asked Mosaics Martí, who made all the tiles, to use varying amounts of green and red pigment. Now you see it laid, the apartment has a graded floor that goes from green at one end to red."nnKohn says that the transformation has been received well by the clients, two brothers who grew up in Barcelona but now live in London and Hong Kong.nn"The clients love it because because their lives were very pragmatic in the way they used the flat," he says.nn"What we were able to reintroduce into their lives was a pleasure of being in this interior, celebrating their time in Barcelona."nnInside Festival 2013 took place at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore from 2-4 October. The next Inside Festival will take place at the same venue from 1-3 October 2014. Award entries are open February to June 2013.   Less

See more architecture and design movies at http://www.dezeen.com/moviesnnMovie: Indian architect Sandeep Khosla explains the importance of outdoor learning at DPS Kindergarten School in Bangalore, India, which won the education category at last month's Inside Festival in Singapore. nnDPS Kindergarten School by Khosla Associates is a prototype for a series of school buildings to be rolled out across southern India.nn"The brief was to really create a typology that could be repeated and adapted to further schools in the region," says Khosla. "We used exposed concrete as the starting point and we created a very modular system that can be expanded vertically as well as horizontally. So the inside of the classrooms are basically the stripped-down materials of the architecture."nnThe 25 classrooms feature brightly-coloured walls made of corrugated metal sheets and perforated terracotta screens for ventilation.nn"Colour is very much a part of the Indian consciousness," Khosla explains. "We've used three colours, which wrap around these corrugated sheets that we used."nnHe adds: "Corrugated sheets are easy to construct with and they reduce time in the construction."nnThe perforated screens, called jali, keep the classrooms cool in the absence of any air-conditioning.nn"We decided to do a climate-sensitive, sustainable school," Khosla explains. "The breezes from south-west to north-east flow right through the classrooms and the hot air rises in the courtyard. So it's a natural ventilation stack effect that we've created."nnThe jali screens also have a decorative purpose, Khosla says.nn"We used two modules of different patterns and we've created very nice floral patterns by combining them," he says. "The light creates lovely patterns on the floor at different times of the day."nnAs well as helping to keep the building cool, Kohsla says the central courtyard is also an important space for learning at the school.nn"The courtyard is the soul of the school," he explains. "In the gurukal system of education in ancient India the disciples would sit at the feet of their guru under the shade of the largest tree in the village."nn"In this school too you have a lot of outdoor learning happening in the courtyard, either on the steps of the corridors or around the frangipane trees. It's all integrated into this central courtyard."nnInside Festival 2013 took place at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore from 2 to 4 October. The service aims to reduce postal costs and avoid the problem of missed deliveries by tracking the location of the recipient's mobile phone.nn"Flirtey is the world's first unmanned aerial vehicle delivery technology," says Flirtey co-founder Matthew Sweeney in this movie about the initiative. "We're taking technology that was previously only available to the military and universities, democratising it and commercialising it so that anybody can order any goods or services and have them flown straight to their smartphone."nn"Currently in Australia same-day delivery by post cost eight to 20 [Australian] dollars," he continues. "By Flirtey it will cost a fraction of that and the consumer won't have to cover it because it will be included in the marketing budget of the companies that we partner with."nnBooks are ordered using a smartphone app, then Zookal packages them before they're flown to the customer's phone rather than their address.nn"Commercial drones are going to become as ubiquitous as aeroplanes in the sky are right now," said Flirtey co-founder and Zookal CEO Ahmed Haider.nnSix battery-powered rotors control flight, which can continue even when one isn't working. "We've built the Flirtey as a hexacopter, so it can lose any one rotor and still fly, and can lose any one battery and still fly," said Sweeney.nnHaider mentions another safety feature: "When the Flirtey arrives to its location it levitates above the location and lowers the parcel to the consumer. If there is anyone that pulls it a little too hard the parcel comes off, keeping the Flirtey safe and ready to go."nnSweeney explains that the civil aviation authority in Australia was one of the first in the world to legalise commercial flights by unmanned aerial vehicles, adding that the USA isn't due to follow until 2015.nnThis gives the startup the opportunity to hone the technology over the next few years, ready to export worldwide.   Less

"We're in the heart of central London, in a derelict building that hasn't been used for the last ten years. It's a really interesting back-drop and it presents design in a much more interesting light."nnSpread over three floors, designjunction showcased a range of furniture and lighting products by both young designers and established brands from the UK and abroad.nnIn the movie we speak to exhibitors including London designer Paul Cocksedge, who was launching his Vamp gadget that plays music wirelessly through vintage speakers, Eero Koivisto of Swedish studio Claesson Koivisto Rune, who was presenting a new range of wicker lamps, as well as Patrzia Moroso of Italian furniture brand Moroso, which provided the furniture for the VIP lounge.nnThe show also featured pop-up shops, bars and restaurants, as well as live manufacturing on site.nn"I wanted exhibitors and visitors to feel that they could spend a full day here," explains Michael Sodeau, creative director of the show. "The idea was to create a rhythm within the building, so it's almost like different districts."nn"On the ground floor we have the pop-up shops and street food. Then on the first floor we move up to more exhibitions, slightly more open spaces and then up onto the second floor where we have brands and a more exclusive restaurant and bar."nnSpencer says one of her personal highlights of this year's show was the Flash Factories area on the ground floor, which featured live demonstrations of various manufacturing techniques, from 3D printing and CNC routing to the production of hand-made bicycle saddles by British manufacturer Brooks.nn"We've got this really strong contrast between craft-making and future digital technology," she says.nnThis year also featured a new lighting section on the first floor called lightjunction.nn"We've brought over a whole host of international brands that haven't shown in the UK for many, many years," Spencer explains.nnShe adds: "On top of that we've got these really strong eateries. So you'll see Jamie Oliver's Barbecoa and there's a Sodastream bar on the ground floor offering complimentary drinks."nnSpencer claims that it is the variety on offer that sets designjunction apart from other design shows.nn"We're more than just an exhibition," she says. See more architecture and design movies at http://www.dezeen.com/moviesnnDezeen and MINI World Tour: San Francisco designer Yves Behar, who recently launched a keyless lock that you control with a smartphone, discusses his vision for how technology can be successfully integrated into the home in this movie filmed in Milan.nnSpeaking at our Dezeen and MINI World Tour Studio at the MINI Paceman Garage during Milan deisgn week, Behar says that design for the home has been slow to embrace today's technology.nn"What we see here [in Milan] from the Italian manufacturers is very safe," he explains. "On the other hand, you have a world of technology that's booming, that's very dynamic. What I'm missing is for those two worlds to come together more."nnBehar continues: "It's not about putting a speaker in a chair, or putting a TV in a bed. That's not how technology and the home intersect. For me, it's about sensors, about the home knowing where you are."nnIn May this year, shortly after we filmed this interview, Behar launched a new company and product called August Smart Lock, which replaces physical keys with a smartphone app and can open automatically as you approach the door.nn"Cars have been like this for years," Behar says in the movie. "Keyless entry in a car is something that we're used to. Somehow the home has been very resistant to this. Some of it has to do with security, but today we know that technology, when things are invisible, is actually safer than physical artefacts."nnLooking to the future, Behar believes that wearable technologies, such as the Up wristband he designed for San Fransisco company Jawbone, provide an exciting opportunity for integrating technology into the home.nn"The next step for me with the Up is how it talks with the rest of the home," he says. "It's an object that can tell the home where I am and what I'm doing. Am I tired from a long day so the lighting should be really mellow and calm, or do I need to be energised so the ambience is going to be rocking? Am I about to get home, so maybe the temperature should go up?"nnHe concludes: "There are all kinds of new intuitive ways that these technologies that we're wearing can interface with the technologies in our home. For reasons of efficiency, but also for having a home that responds to you in ways that are going to be magical."   Less

"The design of the watch is pretty straightforward: the band makes a really simple connection to the core of the watch and we kept the dial very simple."nnHowever, the hour hand of the watch features a decorative "little twist", Wanders goes on to explain, before turning the watch around to show that "on the back there is a fantastic decoration, which is very hidden."nnWanders hopes that his design will stand the test of time. "[We made] something that is, I hope, an evergreen, something that lasts forever," he says. See more architecture and design movies at http://www.dezeen.com/moviesnnThis mobile structure in Hanoi, Vietnam, by Swiss architects Bureau A has a bicycle fitted underneath so it can be cycled from place to place.nnGeneva studio Bureau A designed the project as a multipurpose structure, to be used for anything from a vertical street food restaurant to an exhibition space.nnThe mobile structure can cycled anywhere is it needed, similar to this mobile town square that features a miniature clock tower on the back of a bicycle.nnThe structure belongs to Tadioto, a local bar and cultural centre who use it for art and other social events.nnThe bicycle was originally owned by the steel worker who built the structure, who adapted to fit in the bottom section it can be moved around easily.   Less

See more architecture and design movies at http://www.dezeen.com/moviesnnIn our next movie from Eindhoven, Design Academy Eindhoven graduate Dave Hakkens shows us how his Precious Plastic recycling machines work and explains why he made the blueprints freely available online.nnHakkens' Precious Plastic project is a set of simple machines for recycling plastic and making new products locally.nnHe says he got the idea for the project after visiting plastic manufacturing companies and discovering that they were reluctant to use recycled plastic.nn"We recycle just 10% [of waste plastic]," says Hakkens. "I wondered why we recycle so little so I investigated it. I went to all these companies and I realised that they don't really want to use recycled plastic. So I wanted to make my own tools so I could use recycled plastic locally."nnThe Precious Plastic machines include a plastic shredder, an extruder, an injection moulder and a rotation moulder, which Hakkens made using a combination of new custom-made components and reclaimed parts he found at a scrapyard.nn"I made these machines based on industrial standards," says Hakkens. "But they are all made very simple so you can produce locally. Like a craftsman, you can start working with plastic."nnHakkens designed a range of products to be produced using the machines, including a rotation-moulded waste paper bin, an injection-moulded spinning top and an extruded plastic lamp.nnHowever, he says the machines can be used to make a much wider variety of products.nn"You can make whatever you want," he explains. "Everybody can use [the machines] to make whatever they want and set up their own production."nnLike Hakkens' Phonebloks concept for a modular mobile phone, Precious Plastic is an open-source project and Hakkens hopes other designers will adapt and improve the machines over time.nn"I developed these machines and I shared them on the internet," Hakkens says. "People can make them on the other side of the world and send some feedback and say, 'hey, maybe you can do this better'. In the end you'll have this set of machines and you can start a local recycling centre."   Less
