Follow me on my journey through the most significant and emotional year of my life.n'Val' is a chronological documentation day by day from 15 Feb 2013 to 15 Feb 2014.nStarting as a sort of travel/visual diary animation, the film took a big transformation. it turned out a completely different proposition altogether, covering huge milestones in my life beyond any of my expectations.nWithin this time frame you will see in order-nMy time in Brazil for my friends wedding.nMy journey traveling the east coast of Australia.nThe last days in Salisbury leading up to my Mother passing away.nA stag festival.nGetting married in Peru.nMy mothers funeral.nA lot of London, whilst getting a visa for my wife.nA second trip to Peru.nMoving into a new house.nGetting a new Job.nAnd then finally getting my wife Lisi here just in time to give birth to our son Leonard.nA year by no means as I planed, filled with emotion from euphoria to despair and back.nThe process of making this film has helped me get through this time. It has kept my brain active and been a challenge that I have endured in the name of my beautiful mother.nThe name Val is taken from both my mum Valerie Sheppard and my son Leonard Valentino Graham. I felt this truly represents this crazy circle of life.nThe mandala that appears with the logo and on the locket is symbolic of a year. The inner 12 circles for months the middle 56 for weeks and outer 365 for days.nnAll the photos are hand stabilised and taken using my iPhone, 80% 4S, 20% 5S. nThe shots when I was overseas where mainly spontaneous but the ones in London had too be far more considered. I would plan locations before hand and work out times of the day or year that I would visit them. This meant in the winter months I would have to get up early and travel London before starting work.nI nearly forgot a couple of times and I thought I had lost my phone a few times too which would have ruined the project. Thankfully i managed to keep hold of both laptop and phone whilst on my travels and armed with an alarm on my phone I remembered everyday. Its time to Escape the Light Dome... A world where we are blinding ourselves to a view of the universe. nnThe most disheartening part is that most people not only don't realize this is happening, they don't seem to care. It is something that we have just taken for granted... that we will not see the stars from our cities. What is worse, is that most people have no interest in seeking out a view of the stars. nnI've spent many sunsets in the mountains with moderate crowds, and I am always amazed how quick people are to leave before it gets dark. I understand there is a primordial fear of the dark that is built into us. I get that. However, I also know that there is a different kind of beauty that the night sky brings to the landscape. And, when you wait a little, and let your eyes adjusted to the lack of light, it is a far less frightening place than most would imagine. Its actually quite spectacular. nnThat was the largest motivation for this video. I think it is important to educate people about the existence and scope of light pollution. Beyond that, hopefully this video will inspire people to get out there, and experience first hand what a sky full of stars looks like. nnIt was important to show that the Northwest can be every bit a beautiful at night as it is during the day. Seeing snow capped peaks under the stars, and in awe inspiring site. Watching the lights of climbers move around on Mount Rainier under a starry sky brings an interesting connection to someone you will probably never meet. And standing next to a perfectly calm tarn or lake, and seeing the stars reflect off of that body of water is just spectacular. If you haven't seen these things, you are missing out.nnEveryone should make it a point to spend at least two nights under the stars. First, spend a night under the full moon or nearly full moon. When you look down, and see your own shadow on the ground, and realize that is being cast by the light reflecting off of the moon, it is an amazing sensation. It doesn't even seem real. nnNext spend a night under a moonless sky. The shear number of stars is overwhelming. The Sagittarius arm of the of the Milky Way can be seen extending across the sky. The level of wonderment created by this view is off the charts. nnI know it is popular to ask everyone to share your videos and pictures around the internet. But I would ask you do something slightly different with this video. Share it with our elected officials. Get them to nwatch it, and then ask them what kind of future they want to leave behind. nnFirst, let them see what we as a people are doing to our night skies. More importantly, let them see how totally inefficient we are going about lighting our cities. We can help mitigate this issue by pushing for more efficient lighting practices. This is not about saying everyone needs to turn their lights off at night. Its simply about asking if we are using the right light fixtures to with the right amount of lights to illuminate our streets, sidewalks, and porches. nnFor more information about proper lighting techniques: nhttp://www.darksky.org/outdoorlighting-29nnnBeyond this, I would ask that people help push for the establishment of Dark Sky Parks so that we can preserve the nightly view of the universe for future generations. (Try to watch in HD with headphones on and volume cranked if you can, for maximum immersion!)nnYIKÁÍSDÁHÁ (Navajo for Milky Way or "That Which Awaits the Dawn"nnIn April I had the privilege of being invited to Northern Arizona University as an "artist in residence" to speak with their Photography students about my timelapse experiences. While there, we also took shooting field trips to some of the magnificent locations a few hours away, most notably Grand Canyon National Park and Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park (spotted in many epic John Ford Westerns and countless other classics like EASY RIDER and BACK TO THE FUTURE III http://bit.ly/1lngv3x!) The weather was very intense at times, with high winds, frigid temperatures, and stormfronts passing over us, but the locations were absolutely stunning and the clouds parted for long enough to reveal some incredible starscapes, meteors, and the clearest Milky Way I've ever seen!nnThis was also my first opportunity to collaborate with old friend and former American Film Institute classmate Harun Mehmedinović (www.bloodhoney.com), an incredibly accomplished photographer and now one of the professors at NAU. His passion and artists' eye really elevated the quality of the material in a big way. Because the nights we picked had almost zero moon, the stars and Milky Way were exceptionally clear (once the storm clouds parted), which also made a perfect galactic palette for some star trails experiments, including a new mirroring/distortion effect at 2:56 that revealed a cool native pattern. For those not familiar with past vids, the star trails effect is created by tracing the rotation of the Earth's axis, using a long exposure timelapse pictures and an awesome rendering program called STARSTAX.nnKeep an eye out at 2:10 (top center) as a meteor seems to BURST through the atmosphere and leave a smoke trail in its wake. Maybe you scientists or astronomers out there can help explain in better language :) Also, for those who were asking, the crazy burnt out forest seen in the Milky Way shots is all in Grand Canyon National Park, a much more diverse location than I imagined!nnShot and Produced by: Gavin Heffernan and Harun MehmedinovićnMusic: A Seated Night (Ambient) by Moby.
