Thousands of people have defied Sierra Leone’s three-day lockdown to combat the Ebola virus by crossing the border into Guinea without going through health controls. Health officials in Guinea said people were coming “in waves” through the bush, fearing they would be taken away if they were found to have the disease. Nearly 30,000 thousand health workers, teachers and volunteers are going house to house until Sunday to educate people about Ebola and isolate the sick. A UN emergency response force to tackle the disease will be anchored in West Africa – with headquarters in Accra, Ghana and offices in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. “As each day passes, more people die, many more are infected, and the demands of response and containment become exponentially greater. To get the crisis under control, all of us will have to work in unorthodox ways, break through barriers, and leverage the best that each of us can bring to bear. Speed is of the essence,” the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said on Friday. In the Liberian capital Monrovia a Red Cross burial team was called in to remove the body of a man who had died from Ebola. US troops are arriving this weekend to set up a command centre, while the EU has pledged more funds to help the country combat the disease. Over 7,000 people have died since the beginning of the outbreak in West Africa. Ban visited an Ebola treatment centre in the capital of Sierra Leone, Freetown. The country’s government has been battling to contain Ebola. Sierra Leone accounts for more than half of the total number of people who have contracted the virus. Ban, who has pledged further support in tackling the deadly outbreak, is expected to travel to Guinea and Mali before heading to Ghana and the headquarters of the UN Ebola response mission. Officials from the United Nations and healthcare workers claim that many people in the worst affected countries of Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone have been slow to change their cultural practices. Survivors said around forty people died and were among about 137 migrants from Ghana, Gambia and the Cote d’Ivoire on board an inflatable boat which set off from Libya, according to the Save the Children Fund charity. The deaths happened on Sunday and have come to light after the rescue boat, a Maltese merchant ship docked at the Italian island of Sicily with survivors. It’s claimed some of those who died drowned when they fell into the sea. Witnesses talked of the vessel taking on water and many of he migrants jumped into the water but could not swim. Over a hundred migrants in a second vessel all arrived safely at a port on the island of Sicily where the Maltese freighter docked. “They keep leaving, we know that they keep leaving. The testimonies we have taken over the last few weeks tell us about situations that are completely out of control, terrible atrocities. These people do not have any other opportunity other than to leave their countries and then to Libya, where situations exist that are completely outside any logic,” said Giovanna di Benedetto, Save the Children spokeswoman It’s estimated 1,800 are believed to have died during the crossing from Africa to Europe so far this year.   Less

Masked terrorists load five men into a cage and then seal it with padlocks. The cage is lifted off the side of a pool of water and then slowly lowered down until the four men are submerged. On TV and online Africanews is a round-the-clock multi-media offering, the sister of Europe’s euronews and has a team which is more than 80-strong and represents 15 nationalities. “Initially, because we are coming from different backgrounds, we had to adjust to each other, settling the cultural shocks, moving here to Pointe-Noire from Anglophone countries, from francophone countries,” explained Narkwor Kwabla, Deputy Editor-in-Chief, who is from Ghana. “But then with time, we have learnt to work together and everybody here is professional. So we have learnt to work together for the good of this project. Matza Samwe, a migrant from Nigeria, said she paid the equivalent 2,000 euros for the journey. “I know people die in this sea, but I know my case would be different, I know I would succeed,” he said. “I want to go to Europe because of the fighting in my hometown,” said Tarsen, a migrant from Ghana, “so I tried to escape and come here and want to go to Europe to secure my life.” The UN refugee agency (UNHCR)says nearly 1,000 people have been rescued over the past few days in the Mediterranean Sea, including unaccompanied children. The Bayern Munich defender, whose father is from Ghana, is one of several Germany players with a foreign background. “It’s quite sad that such things happen but you can’t change it. I hope it gets better… there’ve been a lot of good responses,” Boateng said. The football world and beyond has rallied round the player. German fans at Sunday’s friendly against Slovakia responded with a banner saying “Jerome, please move in next door!” “Integration is more successful than Mr Gauland describes. We saw it when thousands of refugees came to Germany. Now it’s important to set an example in daily life as well as in special situations,” said Reinhard Grindel, President of DFB (German Football Association). The medical organisation Medecins Sans Frontieres and SOS Mediterranee took the boatload of mostly young men to the Italian coast.
