A team of Argentinian and US researchers unveiled the fossils of an unusual two-fingered carnivorous dinosaur from Argentina's Patagonia region in Buenos Aires, Wednesday, after the skeleton went missing some nine years ago. The two-legged dinosaur measures six to eight metres long (20 to 26 feet) with arms of approximately 60 cm (2 feet) in length, roughly the same size of a human child. The fossil from this species was found in 2007, when Sebastian Apesteguia and his team discovered it in Patagonia, the southern region of Argentina. The skeleton then disappeared after a road accident while being transported, but reappeared in the care of personnel with the Rio Negro Patagonian Natural Sciences Museum in 2012. Due to the many difficulties surrounding the discovery of the dinosaur fossils, the team, led by Dr. Sebastian Apesteguia, named the recently discovered species Gualicho, which means bad luck in the Tehuelche Argentinian language. I've been hassled for just driving through Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York State and other places. I had $5 in my pocket and very little gas in a gas pig of a 1987 Chevy van that became my home when I arrived in Brattleboro to again live in Vermont. I was hiding from the Connecticut State Police. I did nothing wrong. I was staying in Wales, Massachusetts, on a horse farm, which is on the border in Connecticut. I saw Connecticut State Police vehicles there in Massachusetts, and then it wasn't long and everything electrical got fried, and miraculously, the neighbors' houses weren't hit by the same power surge. When I blogged on Free Speech dot Com around the same time, the owner of that website's servers often fried. Del Simmons is in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Around that same time, Chris Kennedy, in Ellington, Connecticut, had all of his electronics, his computers, televisions, microwave oven, furnace, and pretty much everything in his house also fried due to a power surge. Chris Kennedy had complained about police in the state of Connecticut and about the corrupt judicial system. I fled to Vermont to seek political asylum. I lived out in the woods, without electricity, basically homeless, nearly freezing to death living out in the snow, outside in Winter, but I survived. Work decades, buy a home in the US, be self-employed, raise a family, be outspoken expecting the US Constitution to apply, and this can happen to you. PEMBROKE PINES (CBS4) -- The security video shows a 14 year-old mental patient being escorted down a hallway when a Pembroke Pines police officer reaches in and grabs the girl. The girl whirls and swats at the officer, and he proceeds to punch her in the face. The officer's blow to the mentally disturbed teen snapped her head back, and appeared to be delivered with full force. Other officers join in, wrestling the girl to the ground and spraying her with Mace. "It was shocking to see the amount of violence that occurred. It was shocking," said Assistant Broward County Public Defender Jeff Hittlemen. The incident happened at the Citrus Health System treatment center for mentally disturbed adolescents on April 28th. The place treats children, many under contract with Florida's Department of Children and Families. The public defender's office got involved in the case of the disturbed girl slugged by the cop, after police subsequently charged her with resisting arrest. Broward's Chief Assistant Public Defender, Gordon Weekes, Jr., said officers had to have known they were dealing with a deeply disturbed teen. "They are acting out in their mental illness," Weekes said, "And to draw off and strike a child in the face with enough force to try to knock her head off is nothing more than an excessive use of force." The public defenders uncovered what they're calling systematic use of physical and chemical force to restrain patients at the Pembroke Pines Facility. They said their investigation revealed kids are routinely tied hand and foot to their beds and administered drugs to knock them out. Weekes said his office conducted five, separate interviews with clients at the facility, all of whom said they had essentially been hogtied and injected -- knocked unconscious. Dr. Michael Jochananov, the facility's director, declined to speak with CBS4′s Gary Nelson at the center Thursday. "Sir, I'll have to refer you to our main center," Jochananov said. "I have to get back to may clients now, thank you very much." An attorney for Citrus Health Systems, Josephine van Hemert, said the clients at the facility are seriously mentally ill, and called the public defender's allegations "a misrepresentation of procedures used to restrain these children when they are out of control or attempting to hurt themselves or others." Citrus Health said it welcomes an investigation. It will get one. By the end of the day, the Department of Children and Families, The Agency for Healthcare Administration and the Pembroke Pines police department said they would investigate allegations of abuse of children at the facility. According to the public defender's office, the law does not permit such facilities to use "chemical restraints" on clients as a substitute for a lack of adequate staff. As for the officer who struck the 14 year-old patient, a Pembroke Pines police spokesperson said the girl struck the officer first. Captain Al Axiques told CBS4 the officer and others were at the facility in response to a report of a "riot" among patients called in by staff members at the facility who reported they had "lost control" of the institution. Axiques said the situation was so severe that Mirarmar police officers had to be called in to help restore order. The "riot" at the facility intended to treat severely mentally ill children may raise questions regarding the contractor's ability to manage the institution and carry out its responsibilities under contracts with various agencies and its license, issued by the Agency for Healthcare Administration. Citrus Health's counsel, van Hemert, issued a statement Thursday afternoon saying, "Citrus Health Network will conduct a thorough internal investigation into these allegations. We also welcome the Florida Department of Children and Families, and the Agency for Health Care Administration to conduct their own investigations into this matter."   Less

The tumor, called a limbal dermoid, was benign and had been present in the man from birth. Gradually, the tumor grew in size until it was about 5 mm in diameter or a little less than a quarter of an inch and several black hairs sprouted, researchers from Tabriz University of Medical Sciences located in Iran, said. Limbal dermoids are rare, as an eye doctor can see only one or two cases during a career, Dr. Mark Fromer, director of Fromer Eye Centers in New York and an ophthalmologist at Lenox Hill Hospital, who is not involved in this case, said. These tumors contain tissue that are normally elsewhere in the body. Most often, the limbal dermoid contains hair follicles, but may also contain other tissues, including cartilage and sweat glands, Fromer said. These tumors can cause astigmatism meaning blurred vision, but usually do not cause dramatic vision problems, Fromer said. This is because they normally do not cover the center of the cornea, an important part of the eye for viewing, Fromer said. Limbal dermoid can be removed for cosmetic reasons. Fromer currently has a patient with a limbal dermoid containing hairs, but she did not want it removed. "It has not grown or changed and it did not bother her physically," Fromer said. Io, the innermost of the four largest moons around Jupiter, is the most volcanically active object in the Solar System with about 240 active regions. But this new one definitely caught the eye of Dr. Imke de Pater, Professor of Astronomy and of Earth and Planetary Science at the University of California in Berkeley. She was using the Keck II telescope on Mauna Kea in Hawaii on August 15, 2013 when it immediately became apparent something big was happening at Io. "When you are right at the telescope and see the data, this is something you can see immediately, especially with a big eruption like that," de Pater told Universe Today via phone. de Pater said this eruption is one of the top 10 most powerful eruptions that have been seen on this moon. "It is a very energetic eruption that covers over a 30 square kilometer area," she said. "For Earth, that is big, and for Io it is very big too. It really is one of the biggest eruptions we have seen." She added the new volcano appears to have a large energy output. "We saw a big eruption in 2001, which was in the Surt region, which is well known as the biggest one anyone has ever seen," she said. "For this one, the total energy is less but per square meter, it is bigger than the one in 2001, so it is very powerful." While Io's eruptions can't be seen directly from Earth,infrared cameras on the Keck telescope (looking between 1 and 5 microns) have been able to ascertain there are likely fountains of lava gushing from fissures in the Rarog Patera region of Io, aptly named for a Czech fire deity.
