Since the end of May 2013, political unrest has swept across Turkey. In Istanbul, a large part of the central Beyoğlu district became a battle zone for three consecutive weeks with conflicts continuing afterward. So far five people have died and thousands have been injured.nnThe protests were initially aimed at rescuing Istanbul’s Gezi Park from being demolished as part of a large scale urban renewal project. The police used extreme force during a series of police attacks that began on May 28th 2013 and which came to a dramatic head in the early morning hours of Friday May 31st when police attacked protesters sleeping in the park. nnOver the course of a few days, the police attacks grew to shocking proportions. As the images of the heavy-handed policing spread across the world, the protests quickly transformed into a popular uprising against the Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan and his style of authoritarian rule. nnThis short documentary tells the story of the occupation of Gezi Park, the eviction on July 15, 2013, and the protests that have continued in the aftermath. From Geysers, to thermal pools, to waterfalls, to The Grand Canyon, it crosses the spectrum of natural wonders. nnIt was an absolute joy to photograph Yellowstone. Sunsets seem to last longer than usual (potentially due to the elevation). At times, the technical aspect of shooting was rather difficult because I could only shoot from boardwarlks, which is a limiter. Also, the hot steam from the geysers can fog up a camera lens very quickly! One of the biggest highlights was finding a secret, hot spring swimming hole and enjoying the hot/cold water from different streams. It is also very common to be stopped in the middle of the road for large groups of Bison to cross. This was something I did not get used to. Bristol artist Luke Jerram turns park street into a water slide!nnOn the 4th May this giant 90m (300ft) water slide was installed on Park Street in Bristol as part of Making Sundays Special and the Bristol Art Weekender. Running from 11am-5pm for one day only, the day was an event for the city to remember!nn96,573 people signed up for their chance to get a 'ticket to slide', through a ballot with only 360 tickets were issued to a few lucky people on the day. nnEnabling people to navigate the streets of their city in a new way, the slide is a simple architectural intervention and a playful response to the urban landscape. Like many of Jerram's projects the installation requires public participation to be activated. The person on the slide becomes the performer, while spectators either side watch on.nnThis massive urban slide transforms the street and asks people to take a fresh look at the potential of their city and the possibilities for transformation.
