Having some basic knowledge of your car can keep you out of trouble while on the road. And with more and more people spending time in their vehicles, being familiar with how to change your tire is an essential part of automobile know-how. nnIn this episode of D-I-Why Not? supported by Leatherman, our friends Rachel, James and their little yellow bus walk us through the simple steps of putting on your spare in hopes of preventing any wasted time waiting for a little roadside help.nnSteps:nn1. Scout a level and secure spot, away from traffic, to do the dirty work.nn2. Make sure your car is in Park and the Emergency Break is engaged. For your safety, also flip on your hazard lights.nn3. Block the tires with chocks if you got ‘em. Any heavy item will do.nn4. Situate your jack directly below the jack points of your car. These are usually located directly behind the front tire or directly in front of the back tire and are always metal points. Do NOT use any place that is plastic.nn5. Use the jack to support the car. Do not lift it up quite yet.nn6. Loosen lug nuts, turning counterclockwise. This will require a tool that allows a lot of torque; a cross wrench is best. Do not remove the nuts yet.nn7. Now lift your car off the ground just enough to get a tire off and on.nn8. Finish removing the lug nuts, making sure to store them in a safe spot, where they won’t get lost.nn9. Remove the damaged tire.nn10. Place your spare on the empty bolts.nn11. Hand tighten the lug nuts as best your can by hand, making sure to keep the spare tire flush with the tire hub.nn12. Lower the car back down to the supporting level at which it previously sat.nn13. Use the wrench-and your body weight- to tighten those lug nuts on the best you can. Push down on your cross wrench.nn14. Now lower the jack so the car is back on the ground. nn15. Remove the jack from under the car.nn16. Do one last tightening round on the nuts.nn17. Store your spare in its appropriate place.nn18. Forging is an ancient method where metal is heated and reheated, strengthened and hammered into sinuous, extravagant curves. Through this mysterious process, artists express their creativity and skill. nnThe craft of silversmithing in New England existed even before America's most patriotic silversmith, Paul Revere, made his famous ride. Old Newbury Crafters in Amesbury, Massachusetts was one of the best at the time. Fourteen generations later, it is now in the capable hands of a young metal artist, Chloe Darke. She leads the company in handforging extraordinary objects and declares "there's a rebirth of craft for people in my generation who are interested in traditional ways of making things." Retired silversmith Robert Lapham says Darke "is exactly what this company needs for the future."nnIraq war veteran Tom Pullin forged his life in the military, turning to the GI Bill to pursue training at the Corcoran College of Art and Design in Washington, DC. For Pullin, metal work is a healing path to exorcize the chaotic, confusing, horrifying experiences of war. Pullin works with instructor Davidé Prete and fellow veteran Jeremiah Holland to combine ancient techniques of forging and casting with cutting edge 3-D printing technology. They create a metal skull, a haunting reminder of a young Iraqi girl whose grave was disturbed in a search for a downed Marine. Retired Brigadier General Nolen Bivens, nationally recognized champion of the Army Arts & Crafts program, emphasizes the importance of creativity in the military and the incalculable benefits of the arts to America's warriors.nnAlbert Paley prepares for the most ambitious project of his fifty-year career: Paley on Park Avenue. Thirteen monumental sculptures will be on view on Park Avenue in New York City from June 17 - November 8, 2013. Amid the flying sparks and the red-hot steel, we witness Paley's mastery of all the processes necessary to turn sheets of metal into seemingly weightless ribbons undulating twenty feet above the ground. Paley has pursued a career that has consistently challenged his abilities. "I have a very aggressive, assertive personality and it is made manifest through the materials", Paley says. From fabricating art jewelry, to forging iron gates, to the creation of large-scale sculptures commissioned for public and private spaces worldwide, Albert Paley is now ranked among the most successful and prolific sculptors in America.n nThe Craft in America series is the result of years of advocacy, research and filmmaking by Executive Producer/Director Carol Sauvion. Dezeen and MINI World Tour: Colin Seah of Ministry of Design shows us examples of how Singapore is responding to the challenge of housing a growing population without sacrificing its green spaces in our second movie from the city. nn"It has been a perennial issue," says Seah. "How do you house five to seven million people on an island that would fit into Lake Geneva?"nn"The government could have just said: 'let's not control it, let's have sprawl and have more people living in houses'. But the strategy instead was to protect public spaces and green areas."nnSee more architecture and design movies at http://www.dezeen.com/moviesnnSeah takes us to three of his favourite architectural projects around the city, which each tackle the challenge in different ways.nnThe first is The Pinnacle@Duxton by Singapore architects Arc Studio, a vast public housing complex comprising seven 50-storey tower blocks connected by large bridges and a sky garden at the top.nn"It's amazing because on the same piece of land that housed 150 houses [they have built] up to six or seven times the number of family units," says Seah.nn"The top level is open to the public, because it is public housing after all. You have a 360 degree panorama of Singapore."nnNext Seah takes us to The Interlace, a new private housing development designed by former OMA partner Ole Scheeren, who has since set up his own studio.nn"Instead of having these tall vertical towers, they broke them down to horizontal towers," says Seah of the complex, which comprises 31 six-storey blocks stacked diagonally on top of each other.nnThe blocks are arranged around large hexagonal communal courtyards, while the roofs of the lower blocks provide smaller gardens for the blocks stacked on top of them.nn"Everybody has a chance to use them and look down into them," says Seah. "But you're much closer to the ground than if you were in a vertical tower."nnFinally, Seah takes us to Marina Barrage, a dam designed to control the water coming in and out of Marina Bay and prevent flooding in low lying areas of the city. The machinery that operates the dam is housed in a large building alongside, which features a public park on its gradually sloping roof.nn"Instead of being a utilitarian building, there was a really fantastic agenda to infuse it with a public, park-like quality," says Seah.nn"On the weekends and evenings it's incredibly popular with families. So for a building that just houses machines, it becomes this living space."nnSeah concludes: "The government has been very clever to balance the need for density with more ample public space that people can share collectively."nnWe drove around Singapore in our MINI Cooper S Paceman.
