A young Jewish Orthodox couple expecting their first child were killed in a car crash early Sunday, but their child survived. Nathan and Raizy Glauber, both 21, were in a livery cab on their way to Long Island College Hospital to see a doctor about an issue regarding her pregnancy. She was six months pregnant. A BMW crashed into the side of theirs at an intersection at Kent Avenue in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn. Nathan Glauber was pronounced dead at Beth Israel Hospital, while his wife died at Bellevue. The couple's son was delivered by C-section and is in critical condition, but is stabilizing. Police say the driver of the BMW fled on foot, and remains at large. The livery cab driver suffered non life-threatening injuries. Hasidic community activist Isaac Abraham called the couple's death "a tragedy beyond (belief) just coming off a joyous holiday as Purim" as they were getting ready to welcome their first child. Abraham is also a neighbor of Raizy Glauber's parents and lives two blocks from the scene of the crash. Brooklyn is home to the largest community of ultra-orthodox Jews outside Israel, more than 250000.   Less

A police officer who the NYPD says was its first Hasidic Jewish officer when he joined the department in 2006 was promoted to sergeant on Friday. NY1's Dean Meminger filed the following report.nnJoel Witriol had a big smile on his big day. The officer was promoted to the rank of sergeant on Friday.nn"It's a good job. Just take it," Witriol said.nnThat's what he did back in 2006. At that point, the New York City Police Department says he was the first Hasidic Jewish officer, a trailblazer for his community.nn"I was a little surprised about it, but it's a good thing, hopefully, to have more followers, bringing the community into it," Witriol said.nnThe department has plenty of officers who are Jewish, but just a handful are members of the Hasidic community. That includes Witriol's brother, who didn't want to appear on camera.nnTheir parents are proud their sons are a part of the NYPD family, although they know it is a dangerous job.nn"If they are going to be late, they let us know because my wife is a very nervous lady. She just wants to make sure they come home safe," said Louis Witriol, their father. "It's a little work, but it's OK."nnDuring his work as a police officer with the transit bureau in Brooklyn, Joel Witriol sometimes worked undercover. Well, sort of. He dressed in his religious clothing to catch fare-beaters and people committing other crimes.nn"Every day is a different day," he said. "Different people, different things happening. Getting involved with a lot of stuff you never thought you were going to get involved."nnJoel Witriol started as an auxiliary officer in 2003 and said he realized joining the police department full-time would change his life for the better. He said he hasn't any issues with the NYPD because of his religion.nnDuring official ceremonies, he wears his payess side curls tucked behind his ears, which he proudly did as he was promoted to sergeant. Pelvage might be fun to spot on the red carpet, but it's not so practical for everyday life. For orthodox Jews, modesty is much more specific. Each creed or sect has its own strict clothing guidelines that pertain to fabric, colors, length, and cut. For most, that means elbows are covered; necklines stay high; long, conservative skirts are a must; and married women cover their hair. nnFor modern New Yorkers, those rules might seem more suffocating than empowering. However, preserving modesty doesn't have to be ideologically opposed to promoting creativity. As we've come to learn from two Hasidic women, Brooklyn designers Mimi Hecht and Mushky Notik of Mimu Maxi, living both a religious life and a fashionable one are pursuits that can go hand in hand.
