Sabeeh: Hi guys! This is Hannah, she’s the new DCO for UCLU and she’s the person who’s going to be emailing you every single week for the next year.nnHannah: This is Sabeeh, he’s the new Activities and Events Officer, so he’s the one who, unlike me, gets to do all of the fun stuff involving clubs and societies, events - all of that. nnSabeeh: Wait, everything about UCLU is fun, lets get one thing straight.nnHannah: So, what are you up to right now?nnSabeeh: Well, right now I’m about to go to a meeting, but quickly before that let me just squeeze in something for you guys. Basically, I’ve been helping out with welcome fortnight. So you guys must have checked out Fresher’s Fair over the weekend, well all the clubs and societies are going to be going through the welcome fortnight and that’s a platform for them to show you what it’s like in their society. So you guys saw the sports, arts, cultural, faith and so many other general societies. Make sure you go try them out and buy membership because, as Hannah will tell you, it’s one of the best experiences. Whilst you’re a fresher make the most of it because when you get to the second, third, fourth, or however many years you’re here for, you’re going to get a lot of work and a lot of stress, so for now kick back and enjoy as many societies as you can. So Hannah, tell us what the DCO guys are at UCLU.nnHannah: Ok, so….nnSabeeh: DCO! nnHannah: [Laughs] So…nnSabeeh: Democracy and Communications!nnHannah: As he said, two things: Democracy and Communications. Communications - I email you every week and stand around in camera playing the fool.nnSabeeh: That she is!nnHannah: [Laughs] Democracy – we’re doing elections at the moment, you might have seen some posters saying stand for NUS delegate or faculty rep, and you might not know what that is, that’s fine. Basically, we run elections so you have the chance to represent your faculty, which is where you do your degree, or the union as a whole, for example at an NUS conference every October. It’s really worthwhile getting involved, it’s not a too great a time commitment and all it involves is listening to what is going on in your course and then telling us about it in a student council meeting. Email dco@uclu.org and I can tell you all about it, or come along to one of our ‘Thinking of Standing?’ events. Nominations close on October 3rd, so get them in before 10 am.nnSabeeh: And guys, that’s how we got elected as well. I’m a chemical engineer by trade, so I come under the faculty of engineering. So guys, make sure you stand up for your faculties and get involved in clubs, societies, elections and . . . I want to do the cool thing as well: aeo@uclu.org. But now me and Hannah are singing off from the newly refurbished Gordon’s Café, check it out guys! Have a good week. Less
