Looking at this Koloa Sugar Mill today it is hard to believe that 18 years ago it was in full production and is a testament to how quickly buildings can be consumed by the environment here. What was to later become Koloa Plantation, life started as the firm of Brinsmade, Ladd and Hooper. Arriving on Kauai on July 27, 1833, on the Brig Velocity, Peter Allan Brinsmade, was 25 and accompanied by his wife and child; William Ladd, 26, with his wife and child, and William Hooper, 24, was single. The first two were from Hallowell, Maine, and Hooper from Boston, Massachusetts. The name of the firm was changed in 1835 to Ladd & Company, and ran the plantation for 12 years. In addition to the enterprise at Koloa, Kauai, the company ran a profitable mercantile operation in Honolulu. A 30-foot stone and brick smoke stack and partial foundation is all that remains of the original Ladd & Co Sugar Mill Before 1833, life in Hawaii had changed very little since the Polynesians first made their way to the islands. Some foreigners (i.e. former whalers, missionaries, and so forth) had set up residence. For the most part, their influence was minimal. In 1833, the three men from the Eastern United States formed a mercantile trade company in Honolulu called Ladd & Co. These three would set in motion events that would change Hawaii forever. Prior to 1835, most sugar cane grew wildly in the islands. Production sites were small and were run by families and tribes. On 13 September 1835, Ladd & Co., began the first major Hawaiian sugar plantation. Hooper, Brinsdale, and Ladd managed to do something that no one else had previously done in Hawaii. With the help of missionary settlers, they obtained the first major land lease in Hawaiian history. The lease comprised 980 acres in Koloa, Kauai, which was set aside for sugar cane production. The lease ran 50 years at $300 a year. The missionaries were bent on making farmers of the Hawaiian natives. Ladd & Co. fell nicely into those plans. By employing Hawaiian natives, they would be teaching them the skills missionaries felt were so necessary. Koloa was seen as the perfect place for a sugar plantation. Wild cane already grew in Koloa so they knew it could be cultivated there. The land was fertile and the area got plenty of rain. These were the right conditions for major sugar cane production.   Less

It was just over a year ago that Matthew Haley was arrested for video recording on a public street corner in Georgia after deputies demanded his identification and he refused to provide it on the basis that he was not committing a crime, telling them that all he was doing was documenting the number of cars violating traffic laws. Two days later on the Fourth of July, after having spent 12 hours in jail for obstructing, he was standing outside the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office in Augusta being interviewed by a local television reporter about his arrest when a pair of deputies walked up to him and demanded his identification again, accusing him of suspicious behavior because he was holding a cell phone camera, even though it was obvious he was retelling the story of his unlawful arrest – a charge that is still pending. A few months later, Haley returned to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office to make a public records request for the report pertaining to the July 4th incident, but was again harassed because he had a camera and was ordered away under threat of arrest. He managed to submit his request outside the sheriff’s building before he was forced to scurry away, told never to come back again unless he had legitimate business – as if submitting a public records request is somehow illegitimate. However, when he later called the department for a copy of the trespass order, he was told that none existed. Fast forward to Tuesday of this week when he returned to the sheriff’s department to make more public records requests, only to wind up arrested again because he had refused to turn off his camera. Joseph O’Brien had been taken into custody in April 2012 after he was found unconscious in some woods. A video obtained by WCVB-TV shows that he was initially cooperative, but O’Brien becomes more combative as officers act aggressively toward him. The two-hour-long video shows two Bellingham police officers strike him repeatedly with their batons and doused with pepper spray as O’Brien – who has one wrist handcuffed to a bar – swings at officers with a phone receiver. “The police response looks like something out of the Keystone Cops,” said former Boston Police Lt. Tom Nolan. “The video should be used as a training video in any police academy to train novice police officers what not to do.” Another officer, from Franklin, then shocks O’Brien twice with a Taser as the suspect asks why he’s been brought to the police station. An officer tells him he’s under arrest, and O’Brien asks what charges. “You know what — tase him,” an officer says. Bellingham Police Sgt. Finally got the editing software downloaded and worked on the video for when TruNinja came to visit. I still need practice with the new software and was anxious to get this video up so here is the first attempt with editing. Fourth of July TruNinja came out to visit and we did some shooting at my place, he brought some awesome toys and we shot some of the guns I had. After we got done shooting we drove up to camp and I took him out on the boat for a while, it was chilly out and didnt get any water time in but still had fun. The day ended with some horeshoes and grub off of the grill. This guy is one of the great LL'rs, he was a really nice guy and fun to hang out with. I really enjoyed his visit and looking forward to another one. Thanks for coming out brother, it was a pleasure....sorry it took so long to get the video up and next time I'll have more experience with the software to do a better video and not be in a rush....cheers LL...more vids to come on the yard update, tubing down the river. Emergency forces and locals could be seen taking the bodies of Malin residents, including several children, to the 30 ambulances on site. A large rescue operation is now under way in the village, with nine teams from the National Disaster Response Force coming to the site, made up of 378 trained personnel. The rescue teams and locals attempted to uncover more bodies from the mud by removing logs and debris with JCB diggers. Malin is 15 to 20 kilometres (nine to 12 miles) from the closest medical facilities, and with major damages to to its surrounding roads, rescue teams were faced with difficulties in transporting the injured to hospitals. India's monsoon season arrived later than expected this year, with heavy rains affecting many villages in the Maharastra region of India. Argentina has failed to strike a deal to avert its second default in more than 12 years after talks with hold-out investers ended without settlement. The so-called “hold-outs” are US hedge funds that bought debt on the cheap and have never agreed to restructuring. Last June a judge on the US Supreme Court ruled that Argentina was liable to pay the hold-outs the 967 million euros they were demanding and blocked payments to the restructured bond holders unless it also paid the “Vulture funds”. After the last minute talks appeared to be going nowhere, the court-appointed mediator Daniel Pollack confirmed that a default by Argentina was imminent . A fresh default is not expected to affect Argentina’s economy as it did more than a decade ago, when dozens were killed in street protests and the authorities froze savers’ accounts to halt a run on the banks. Hollande and Gauck embraced when they visited the crypt at the site, which houses some 12,000 unidentified soldiers who died in the area. In a speech at the site of the former battlefield, Hollande celebrated the strength of France and Germany’s relationship today. “To those who are desperately regarding the peace process in the Middle East, what better message can we deliver than today’s message. The history of France and Germany shows that will can always win over fatality and that people who were seen as hereditary enemies can, within a few years, reconcile,” Hollande said. Standing at Hollande’s side, Gauck spoke of how both of their families were involved in the WW1 fighting, saying: “Our two grandfathers, [Gauck’s and Hollande’s] who fought each other, couldn’t have imagined this scene. It’s like a dream. III. Shrouds you can make of "shatnes"—Jewish Law! "Why?" IV. "Once you're dead, [the Law] doesn't apply to you anymore"—[the Law] is only for the living person. Therefore, when we talk about a time of the year of the resurrection of the dead, (according to that view) once you have been exempted (*Biblically*-exempted) from the Laws (because you have died), now you are resurrected—now you are kind of a completely new reality! This is not the person who is normatively born [to whom Law applies]; the resurrected-dead are not born of father and mother [the Law doesn't apply]. In their original existences, they were born of father and mother—no, they will rise from their graves [Dn 12:2], and their bodies will somehow be reconstituted/rebuilt—but they have now reached a stage where the obligation of Torah-Mitzvahs [had been] removed from them; and there's nothing to remove that [exempted] state from them (just because they are alive, nothing has changed [their exemption]—there's no new giving of the Torah [or] revelation of Torah). Monday is the 6th day of the international military competition, and the pursuit stage will run over August 11 and 12. Teams from Angola, Armenia, Belarus, China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Kuwait, Mongolia, Russia, Serbia and Venezuela, have to navigate a distance of 20 kilometres (12.5 miles), evading various obstacles, crossing rivers and bridges and shooting at a set of targets. All teams except for China are competing using Russian-made T-72B tanks which weigh 44.5 metric tons (44,500 kg), feature 840 horsepower (618 kw), and can travel up to 60 km/h (37 mph). The concept of the tank contest follows the rules of the classic biathlon. Each vehicle aims to cover around 20km in the shortest time possible while hitting targets to earn extra points. The two-week event began on August 4 and will conclude on August 16.
