Venezuelans have been queueing at ATMs and banks for the new banknotes. Caracas resident Gustavo Castillo, was not optimistic about the fresh roll-out. “I think it is more of the same. Effectively what we are doing is putting more money on the street, attracting more inflation. The economic situation that is getting worse will not change. More notes on the street means more inflation, depreciation in the currency and nothing else,” he told reporters. Venezuela’s Socialist President, Nicolas Maduro, has extended the deadline for withdrawing the 100 bolivar note for a third time, to February 20. Worth just two euro cents on the black market, it is being scrapped the leader said, to prevent smuggling and the hoarding of currency abroad. At the beginning of January, 2017, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) calculated inflation in Venezuela was at 475 percent, but it forecasts it could reach 1,660 percent this year. Huge crowds have come out on the streets of the Philippine capital Manila to honour an iconic statue known as the Black Nazarene. Here we explain the statue’s history and why it attracts such fierce devotion. What happens? On January 9 each year, millions of people gather to celebrate the statue, including a spectacular religious procession which sees devotees carry a replica of the Black Nazarene across Manila. What is the Black Nazarene? It’s a life-sized statue of Jesus Christ holding his cross, normally housed in Quiapo Church in Manila. What do devotees believe? The statue has become “an emblem of passion, struggle and faith” for Catholics in The Philippines, according to the Catholic News Agency. Devotees believe the statue has mystical powers that can atone for sins and cure illnesses. The Philippines is home to around 80 million Catholics, or 80 percent of the population, a legacy of its time as a Spanish colony. What is the Black Nazarene’s story? It is thought the statue was made in Mexico before being transported to The Philippines in 1606. Nazarene’s dark colour is attributed to a fire on the ship that was carrying it to Manila. This episode – and the fact it has survived other fires, earthquakes, floods and bombings – has helped to reinforce its mystical powers among devotees. What happens during the procession? The procession, which dates from the 17th century, is known as the Translacion. It sees the statue transported on a chariot – it’s pulled by ropes and pushed from behind – through the streets of Manilla. Some devotees try to get as close as possible, often clambering on their neighbour’s shoulders to try and touch the statue. Others follow the 6.5-kilometre procession route in bare feet, seen as a sign of regret for sins committed. Five student activists, detained in prison since 2014, have also been freed. Almost three quarters of victims of human trafficking worldwide are female. That’s according to a newly released UN report. The organisation’s Office on Drugs and Crime based its findings on trends studied among 63,000 trafficking victims between 2012 and 2014. More than half of those affected were adult women, while 20 percent were underage girls. Slavery, fraud, sham marriages were some of the forms of trafficking but the common theme was sexual exploitation. Kristiina Kangaspunta, UNODC Chief of the Global report on Trafficking: “Women are mainly exploited in sexual exploitation. 72 percent of women are exploited through sexual exploitation, but there also are 20 percent who are exploited in forced labour.” The rise of Islamist extremism was also found to have had a major impact. Nadia Murad, a Yazidi human rights activist and former ISIL abductee spoke of genocide. “One element of this genocide (committed by ISIL against Yazidi) was the systematic enslavement of the Yazidi women, girls and children. More than 6 thousand were enslaved and reduced to items of property through an abusive system, where ISIL militants treated Yazidi women as a worthless tool to served there sick desires.” However the report also found that the proportion of men had risen to 21 percent in the last decade. In Sub-Saharan Africa a rise was noted in the numbers of males becoming victims of forced recruitment for different military conflicts. The numbers studied in the report are just a sliver of the 21 million people estimated to be trafficked worldwide by the UN’s International Labour Organisation (ILO) The UNODC Chief stressed that more resources clearly need to be devoted to identify and assist trafficking victims, as well as improve criminal justice responses to detect, investigate and successfully prosecute cases. Bruce Atkinson, from Apollo Bay, was able to brush the prickles out of the female koala’s fur. Atkinson told Storyful: “I put a bowl of water out for the koala, but it just knocked it away and started to growl. I was a bit worried, but I popped on some motorcycle gloves and grabbed a brush and it let me comb out the burrs.” Atkinson told Storyful it took him about 30 minutes to brush out the prickles and that koala stayed around the house for the remainder of the day. Situated on the King’s Highway between the capital and Petra, it is one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations. Witnesses reported hearing sporadic gunfire in the vicinity of the citadel.
