Coinciding with the current migration crisis from East to West, Schellekens & Peleman have started to work on ‘The Inflatable Refugee’. A large inflatable adult male figure that represents a seated refugee.nnThe ‘Inflatable Refugee’ gazes blankly into the distance. Has he arrived at a safe haven or will he be refused and be sent from whence he came? His sheer size allows him to look over and beyond us and keep watch on the horizon, not limited by borders or documents. It makes him inescapable, undeniably present.nnDo we see him as a human or as a problem? Is his presence an opportunity or a threat, devoid of human characteristics? Schellekens & Peleman proportionally enlarged the ‘Inflatable Refugee’ to match the extreme reactions his arrival in the Western world evoked. His size represents how we perceive him.nn© Schellekens & Pelemannnwww.dirkschellekens.comnwww.facebook.com/schellekens.pelemannnSnippet made by ZMo Productions and Fort 07.nPowered by Janson Bridging & X-treme Creations. The “Blow dough” project manufactured dough balloon, using industrial blower, with highest temperature of 600 Celsius, which made the seasoned dough baked during blowing it into the shape of an inflated balloon.nIn the manufacturing process, local herbs were added to the blowing act and their exceptional senses were assimilated to the dough. Thus, the entire eating experience was enriched. The project illustrates the food manufacturing process in a small-scale factory that was established for one day as an analogy to the street food carts and to the urban eating experience in Jerusalem. Spearheaded by Elijah Renard, Free Kitties is a fun crowdsourcing campaign to raise public awareness around transgender issues such as gender dysphoria. I had the amazing opportunity to film among the aspens in the aspen forests of Northern Arizona with a truly amazing band, TOW'RS, from Flagstaff Arizona. Females of the red jungle fowl mate with multiple males, which can create competition between sperm of different males in order to fertilize the egg. In my PhD thesis, I explored the effect of brotherhood on sperm competition and female choice. Interestingly, the brother of the first male that the female has mated with invests more sperm in the female than the non-brother of the first male mate. However, the female ejects a higher proportion of sperm from the brother of the first mate and favours the sperm of the non-brother, facilitating a higher fertility by the non-brother’s sperm. nnIn addition to the main story, we showcase some of the interesting biology of sperm. First, sperm quality differs and while some move faster and are more forward-moving, others move in circles. Second, sperm of multiple males can interact with one another, sometimes even antagonistically. nnInspired by various sports, the dance movements in this video reflect the competitive nature in the sperm world. The two original music pieces in this video are (1) ‘Animal Love’, which is about the variety of sexual behavior in different species and (2) ‘Scenester’, a piece telling the story about a girl who keeps changing her ways and males trying to keep up with her.nnDirector: Cedric Tan (http://www.zoo.ox.ac.uk/egi/members/cedric-tan-kai-wei/)nProducer: Sozos Michaelides (http://www.zoo.ox.ac.uk/egi/members/sozos-michaelides/)nCo-choreographer: Hannah MoorenCo-producer: Kiyono Sekii (http://www.zoo.ox.ac.uk/egi/members/kiyono-sekii/)nDirector of Photography: Xinyang Hong (http://www.worldpictured.com/videos)nOriginal music and lyrics by Stuart Noah (http://stuartnoah.bandcamp.com/; https://www.facebook.com/stuart.noah) Less
