See more architecture and design movies at dezeen.com/moviesnnSelf-production versus royalties was the hot topic at this year's Blickfang designworkshop, held at Boisbuchet in France and led by designer Sebastian Wrong.nnAround a dozen young designers attended the workshop, which was established to help young designers develop the skills they need to turn their creativity into successful businesses.nn"We thought it would be a good idea to bring together the professional design scene with independent, young designers and create a platform where they can discuss the business part of design," said Blickfang CEO Jennifer Reaves.nnThe annual workshop compliments the Blickfang design markets that are held in various cities around Europe each year, where young designers sell their products direct to the public.nn"[The workshop is] about exchanging ideas and experiences on how this job, this passion, can bring a monthly income," said Reaves. "It's basically about the business prospects of being a designer; getting a reality check about how this business really works."nnThe workshop was held between 11 and 13 June at Domaine de Boisbuchet, a country estate in southwestern France that hosts design workshops every summer.nnOver the three days of the workshop, designers presented their ideas and explained the issues they were facing to a group of curators including former Established & Sons creative director Sebastian Wrong (who now heads new design venture Wrong for Hay), Authentics founder Hansjerg Maier-Aichen, journalist and Magazin curator Eva Steidl, and Dezeen founder and editor-in-chief Marcus Fairs.nn"It brought to the surface a real current issue in the design world, which is about whether designers should actually look after the production themselves, or go down the more conventional route of selling a design to a company that will distribute and sell it," said Wrong. "It's all too easy to pursue your dreams and forget about the really important factor, which is: what is it going to cost?"nn"We were very excited when we got the invitation to come to Boisbuchet, because of the thrilling curators," said workshop attendee Nina Wolf of German designers Nju Studio. "We discussed our products and we discussed the price, which is one of the biggest problems for start-ups."nnShe added: "The workshop was great, like a brainwash but in a very positive way."nn"I really wanted to hear the opinions of other people, and hear how they bring their products to market," said another attendee, Dutch designer Charley Reijnders. "It was really good that we had to put our feet on the ground and really start thinking about money and about business. Because at the end of the day, this is my job."nnOther attendees featured in the movie include Jonas Schroeder of Joval, and Phillip Beisheim.nnLast year's Blickfang designworkshop was held in Copenhagen and was headed by Jaime Hayon. Thirteen monumental sculptures will be on view on Park Avenue in New York City from June 17 - November 8, 2013. Amid the flying sparks and the red-hot steel, we witness Paley's mastery of all the processes necessary to turn sheets of metal into seemingly weightless ribbons undulating twenty feet above the ground. See more architecture and design movies at http://www.dezeen.com/moviesnnMovie: Indian architect Sandeep Khosla explains the importance of outdoor learning at DPS Kindergarten School in Bangalore, India, which won the education category at last month's Inside Festival in Singapore. nnDPS Kindergarten School by Khosla Associates is a prototype for a series of school buildings to be rolled out across southern India.nn"The brief was to really create a typology that could be repeated and adapted to further schools in the region," says Khosla. "We used exposed concrete as the starting point and we created a very modular system that can be expanded vertically as well as horizontally. So the inside of the classrooms are basically the stripped-down materials of the architecture."nnThe 25 classrooms feature brightly-coloured walls made of corrugated metal sheets and perforated terracotta screens for ventilation.nn"Colour is very much a part of the Indian consciousness," Khosla explains. "We've used three colours, which wrap around these corrugated sheets that we used."nnHe adds: "Corrugated sheets are easy to construct with and they reduce time in the construction."nnThe perforated screens, called jali, keep the classrooms cool in the absence of any air-conditioning.nn"We decided to do a climate-sensitive, sustainable school," Khosla explains. "The breezes from south-west to north-east flow right through the classrooms and the hot air rises in the courtyard. So it's a natural ventilation stack effect that we've created."nnThe jali screens also have a decorative purpose, Khosla says.nn"We used two modules of different patterns and we've created very nice floral patterns by combining them," he says. "The light creates lovely patterns on the floor at different times of the day."nnAs well as helping to keep the building cool, Kohsla says the central courtyard is also an important space for learning at the school.nn"The courtyard is the soul of the school," he explains. "In the gurukal system of education in ancient India the disciples would sit at the feet of their guru under the shade of the largest tree in the village."nn"In this school too you have a lot of outdoor learning happening in the courtyard, either on the steps of the corridors or around the frangipane trees. It's all integrated into this central courtyard."nnInside Festival 2013 took place at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore from 2 to 4 October. I think most fly fishers would agree the places and the journey are often just as, if not more rewarding than landing big fish. A recent weekend at favorite trout stream in the shadow of Mt. Ranier and Mt. Adams was a reminder of that. This stream draws me back every year. Partly because the indigenous nature of the trout and also because there is an almost palpable energy there that always create a unique experience. We slept on top of a high mountain and were privy to some spectacular sunrises, sunsets and an array of other views that warranted their own segment. The fast narrow trail features flowy terrain, steep descents and large bermed turns. It's believed to be the first trail of its kind--but more importantly, it's pretty fun.nnChapter Three explores the ever-shifting moonscape of the frozen shoreline of the world's largest body of freshwater, Lake Superior. This segment was shot over two days in late March 2013 about a half mile offshore within the city limits of Marquette. Over the course of the long winter Lake Superior's legendary storms create an otherworldly landscape of ice and snow that shifts with each gale. The ice formations, created by wave action and freezing temps, are usually anchored on the lake bottom and can rise from the water up to 30 feet in some locations. A contrast in materials was another way for us to communicate something we loved about Sidewinder’s character – a man conflicted. Loyal as a cold-blooded killer to the aching heart of his dear brother, yet understanding of one woman’s insatiable thirst for revenge. So now it’s time to blast off into new and cool music videos, interviews and the happenings in music! nnTo kick off 2014 we bring you a music video tribute to the King of Neo-Soul, Omar Lye-Fook better known as OMAR. When I first heard his sound, it was during the early days of the Acid Jazz movement. Artists like Brand New Heavies, James Taylor Quartet and of course Jamiroquai dominated the hip and cool scene. For Omar, it was the ‘The Soul of the Boogie Back’ compilation (Painful Truth single featuring Max Beesley’s High Vibes). I was completely blown away with his honey tenor vocals and Sam Cook harmonies. Songs like ‘Saturday’, ‘Outside’ and ‘This is Not A Love Song’ kept my feet smoking on the dance floor. Then fast forward to his latest album, The Man (Freestyle Records), the hybrid soul tour de force album is a diverse sound to be reckoned with. And in tribute to the recently awarded MBE (Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) for his Services to Music, WTLMS is taking you on a tour of his work!
