Over 4000 were killed or died while trying to reach Israel, and were unable to receive a Jewish burial (which is very sad for this religious community). Many children arrived in Israel having lost their parents on the journey, or vice-versa. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has met with Damas Pakada, the Ethiopian Israeli soldier who was seen on a close circuit video camera being beaten by police. “I was shocked and we cannot accept this,” the PM is reported to have told the soldier who said that his meeting Netanyahu was encouraging and that he was left with a good feeling. “I feel sad on one hand because Sunday’s protest deteriorated into violence against the police and against civilians. I do support the demonstration, I am with them. I hope it will be understood that the Ethiopian community is part of Israeli society,” he stressed. Sunday’s demonstration in Tel Aviv was one of the most violent seen in the country’s commercial capital for years. Police fired tear gas and stun grenades as demonstrators threw bottles and bricks. At least 46 police and seven protesters were hurt. There were dozens of arrests, officials said. Two officers have been suspended on suspicion of using excessive force as politicians try to defuse tensions. Israeli president Reuven Rivlin condemned Sunday’s rioting but acknowledged the protesters had legitimate grievances. The unrest in Tel Aviv followed demonstrations in Jerusalem last Thursday. Nearly 100 people have been shot dead by security forces in Oromiya and Amhara in Ethiopia in a weekend of protests against discrimination and land seizures. In the capital Addis Ababa members of the Oromo and Amhara opposition groups, from the country’s two biggest ethnic groups who together form two-thirds of the population, joined in protest against the government. They called for the freeing from prison of activists detained earlier in the year when unrest in the two regions flared over agricultural land being rezoned for development. The plans have since been dropped. Human rights groups say the Ethiopian security forces used excessive force and the government has consistently met protests and dissent with violence. A festival has ended in bloodshed in Ethiopia. Dozens of people have been killed and injured in a stampede after police confronted ethnic Oromo protesters. Thousands were attending the annual Irrecha festival which was taking place in Bishoftu in the Oromia region, which has seen several months of sometimes deadly anti-government protests . People in the crowd held up crossed wrists, a popular gesture of dissent before the stampede happened, others chanted ‘we need freedom’. The government did not give a precise death toll but confirmed lives were lost, blaming ‘people that prepared to cause trouble’ for the chaos. The opposition said at least 50 people were killed, while on activist said up to 300 died and many more injured. Some died as the crowd fled in a panic after security forces fired rubber bullets and tear gas, creating a stampede. Some ended up falling into a deep ditch. Mariam Ibrahim refused to renounce her Christianity and was sentenced to death by hanging for apostasy. The 27-year-old says she has never considered herself Muslim and was brought up by her Ethiopian Christian mother after her Muslim father left the family. However Sudanese law defines children of Muslim fathers as Muslim. She had also been sentenced to 100 lashes for adultery because the court does not recognize her marriage to husband Daniel Wani. He is a Christian originally from South Sudan, now a US citizen. The death sentence had drawn international condemnation. Ethiopia has declared a six-month long state of emergency across the whole country following months of anti-government protests. Rights groups say more than 500 people have died in the unrest, the government disputes this figure In a televised address Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn said the measure had been taken to protect citizens: “The cause of this (state of emergency) is that anti-peace forces in collaboration with foreign enemies of the country are making organised attempts to destabilise our country, to disrupt its peace and also to undermine the existence and security of its peoples.” Divisions Residents in the capital Addis Ababa are divided over whether a state of emergency will help the situation. “The state of emergency will not work. It may serve as a temporary fix but will not bring a lasting solution,” said one man but another thought the government had been slow to react. “In my opinion, the government is late to declare a state of emergency. If the government had taken this action earlier, the recent destruction that happened across the country would not have happened.” The violence is being fueled by two of the country’s largest ethnic groups – the Oromo and the Amhara who make up about 60% of the population. They complain that power in Ethiopia is held by a tiny Tigrean elite. Economy The violence has cast a shadow over a nation where a state-led industrial drive has created one of Africa’s fastest growing economies. The unrest has included attacks on businesses, many of them foreign-owned, including farms growing flowers for export. Emergency decree Attorney General Getachew Ambaye said the decree would permit authorities to stop and search and also detain suspects without court authorisation, as well as carry out house searches. It also bars the “preparation, distribution and exhibition of material that could incite chaos”, he said in an official announcement. The measures did not contain curfews, but Getachew said the command post set up to oversee the implementation of the legislation and chaired by Hailemariam would determine where and when to impose curfews “should the need arise”.
