Hungary’s first democratically elected president Árpád Göncz, has died aged 93. He was elected twice by parliament and is credited with steering the country towards a market economy. Goncz joined the resistance against the Nazis during World War Two but was jailed after Hungary’s failed 1956 uprising against Soviet rule. He was later freed under an amnesty when he return to politics co-founding the liberal Alliance of Free Democrats. A lawyer by education he was also an translator and playwright but his political ambitions provided welcome opportunities for him to meet numerous world leaders. Wallenda first walked from the 179-metre (579-foot) Marina Tower West to the 193-metre (635-foot) Leo Burnett Building, and then wore a blindfold to travel from the Marina Tower West to the equally tall Marina Tower East. A variety of celebrities and other well-known figures were on hand for the event, including Christian megachurch pastor Joel Osteen. Temperatures were around 10 degrees Celsius (50 degrees Fahrenheit) at the time of Wallenda's walks, with wind speeds of 26 kilometres per hour (16 miles per hour).
