At the last game of the semester, students dress in the wildest and craziest costumes they can think of, and quietly fill the stands. The entire crowd then remains completely silent until Taylor scores its 10th point. Every year the Silent Night tradition grows in scope, craziness, and national recognition.nnIn 2012, I had the privilege of co-directing the live broadcast of the Silent Night basketball game (more specifically, I directed the first half and halftime, while a co-producer directed the second half). The house was suffused with pianos, guitars, trombones, talking birds, classical records, family sing-a-longs, bedtime stories, and the bellowing of a pipe organ, which his father built into the house with his own hands. During the summer of 2015 I was informed that Bellevue, Washington 'Skate King' was closing its doors for good. I jumped at the opportunity to shoot at this location and direct my teaser for a script I completed in 2003 ironically called 'The Skate King'.nnI hired Andrejs Lazdins of 'Pie In The Sky Productions' to help me for the first day to shoot beauty and drone shots. nnThe next few days I shot inserts myself. I wanted everything to look a bit grainy and hand held and I opted to use no lighting other than the lights in the building for a true yet rich nostalgic feel in the post & color grading.nnBecause of the immediacy of the closure and summer skate lessons in session; we only had a very small window of just 4 hours in the morning and an hour the late afternoon.nnThe skating rink shut down for good at the end of June 2015. Farewell Skate King–you survived nearly 5 decades in Bellevue WA.nnI hope to bring this full feature to life some day. Thomas Weller, a.k.a. “The San Diego Highwayman” has been rescuing people stranded on the side of the road for 48 years.nnWhen he was 16 years old, he drove his car into a ditch. A man came along and rescued him, asking only that Thomas pay it forward one day.nnSince that time, Weller has rescued thousands of people who were stranded in one way or another. Weller hands them a card that says “You don’t owe me a thing. I’ve been there too. Someone once helped me out, just the way I’m helping you. If you really want to pay me back, here’s what you do: don’t let the chain of love end with you.nnBack in August of 2011, Weller’s famous rescue car “Beulah” was totaled during a rescue. The remains of his prized car still sat in his back yard. Since the launch of this film, we've been able to raise more than $12,000 to help Thomas and a donor has come forward and fixed Beulah. In the 12 years after my birth, my mother lost a total of 6 pregnancies, all culminating with the stillbirth of my brother Jacob. This experience opened my eyes to a sort of secret world where many women and families suffer in silence. It's an issue that is tough to talk about, it's hard to know what to say, or know how to comfort those experiencing this type of loss. nnMy piece will follow the history and experience of my Mother. It will cover her challenges, her heartbreak, and ultimately explore life after loss and her existential journey to find peace. In developing and sharing this trailer, I am at a crossroads as to whether or not I should expand the project to a larger level.
