Directed by Spielberg, Disney’s “The BFG” tells the imaginative story of a young girl and the Giant who introduces her to the wonders and perils of Giant Country. The BFG (Mark Rylance), while a giant himself, is a Big Friendly Giant and nothing like the other inhabitants of Giant Country. Standing 24-feet tall with enormous ears and a keen sense of smell, he is endearingly dim-witted and keeps to himself for the most part. Giants like Bloodbottler (Bill Hader) and Fleshlumpeater (Jemaine Clement) on the other hand, are twice as big and at least twice as scary and have been known to eat humans, while the BFG prefers Snozzcumber and Frobscottle. Upon her arrival in Giant Country, Sophie, a precocious 10-year-old girl from London, is initially frightened of the mysterious giant who has brought her to his cave, but soon comes to realize that the BFG is actually quite gentle and charming, and, having never met a giant before, has many questions. The BFG brings Sophie to Dream Country where he collects dreams and sends them to children, teaching her all about the magic and mystery of dreams. Having both been on their own in the world up until now, their affection for one another quickly grows, but Sophie’s presence in Giant Country has attracted the unwanted attention of the other giants, who have become increasingly more bothersome. Sophie and the BFG soon depart for London to see the Queen (Penelope Wilton) and warn her of the precarious giant situation, but they must first convince the Queen and her maid, Mary (Rebecca Hall), that giants do indeed exist. He thought at first that he was on some kind of examining table in a hospital, but as he took note of what surroundings he could see through the slit of his eyelids, he quickly realized that, wherever he was, it was definitely not a hospital.nnJabari had no time to ponder his location further as he suddenly remembered what he had been doing right before he had been (taken? abducted?) to this place. His hands immediately went to his left knee, which had buckled underneath him not two minutes before. There had definitely been a "pop", and that meant an almost guaranteed ACL or MCL tear...but Jabari didn't feel any pain at all.nnA woman's smiling face leaned over him. "Pain does not exist here," she said.nnThat was a very confusing statement, but Jabari could only think about how beautiful this woman was, wearing a white robe and a wreath of carnations which held her waist-length blond hair in place. He sat up and looked around him, purposely avoiding another glance at the woman of unsurpassed beauty. They were in some kind of meadow, underneath a sky that was almost pure white save for a light tinge of blue. Rolling hills spread out as far as the eye could see in every direction, dotted by intermittent trees. "Is this...a different dimension?" Jabari asked.nn"Not exactly, but for our purposes, we can treat it as such." responded the woman. "To disclose its true nature might induce the unraveling of your sanity." Jabari frowned. Was he being called stupid? nnThe woman took note of his expression. "Do not worry, Jabari. It is not within the reach of mortals to understand this place."nnHis brain operating sluggishly under the bright sunlight, Jabari repeated, "Mortals? So that means you're...immortal?"nnNodding, the woman responded, "That is correct. So, if you seek a name for this place, "land of immortals" would be as appropriate as any."nnJabari couldn't complain about being in this alternate dimension where pain was only a theoretical concept, where there was at least one beautiful woman (perhaps more), and where he didn't have to face the unrelenting pressure of being a professional basketball player every second of the day. Still, he couldn't help but ask, "But if this is a land of immortals, what am I doing here?" Sudden panic gripped his heart as he remembered how heaven was described in his own religion. "I didn't die, did I?"nnThe woman's laughter reassured Jabari well before she spoke her next words. "No, Jabari. You are very much alive. This land is merely a stopping point for those who have sustained devastating knee injuries."nnFor the first time, Jabari noticed two figures, one sitting, one standing, on a distant hilltop. "That is another injured man," supplied the woman, confirming Jabari's thoughts. "It appears that he is preparing to depart." As Jabari watched, the man stood up, then abruptly disappeared.nn"I guess I'll have to leave, too," Jabari said sadly. This was a place of such profound peace that he was already having a hard time remembering what the real world was like.nn"No mortal can ever stay here," the woman said. "But your visit to the land of immortals, however short, will provide you the strength you need to recover from your injury. Nike will exploit your injury to sell sports drinks. Do not let their relentless pursuit of profits cause your resolve to waver. Hold this place in your heart and it will guide you through the trials to come."nnJabari stood up from the grass and flowers just as the other man had done. Immediately, the vibrant sunlight began to dim, and a brisk warm wind caused the branches of trees to sway; it was time to leave.nn"Wait! What's your name?" Jabari asked, reaching out his hands desperately as if trying to anchor himself to anyone, anything.nnThe woman's robes were blowing around her. She smiled graciously. "Names are unnecessary. Even nameless, you will never forget me."nnJabari knew that the woman spoke the truth. "No. I won't."nnThen, everything went black.n---nnJabari came back to himself as he was being helped off the court by his teammates. Members of the opposing team were glancing uncomfortably at him. Dit grote talent is onder meer te horen op single Elleke Keer en is eveneens afkomstig uit Den Haag. Voor GLOWINTHEDARK is dit pas het begin van hun genreoverschrijdende plannen. Albert: “Niks in hokjes, dat zul je wel horen op dit album. Alles kan en mag zolang het maar tof aanvoelt.”nnDe titel LITUATIE, zoals het project is gedoopt, is een samenvoeging van ‘situatie’ en ‘lit’. “Wanneer het echt ‘aan’ is. Zoals op dit album, of wanneer mensen ons live gaan meemaken”, zegt Frenna. Maar eerst dus nieuwe muziek. Tracks die zich niet makkelijk in één hokje laten plaatsen. LITUATIE gaat van hiphop met EDM invloeden, via trap tot house en r&b. Soms moest er gevochten worden om een productie. “De track ‘Belazerd’ begon als een productie samen met David Guetta voor John Legend”, Frenna lacht. “Maar we moesten die hebben en de beat is ook wel echt kapot gemaakt, als je mij vraagt.” nnGLOWINTHEDARK is een DJ/producers duo, bestaande uit Kevin Ramos en Albert Harvey uit Den Haag. Het duo staat voor positieve energie en diversiteit en wordt vertegenwoordigd door management- en bookingskantoor &V Artist Agency. Inmiddels hebben ze internationaal furore gemaakt met hun internationale producties en wereldwijde tours en shows. Ze waren al te zien op Ultra Music Festival Miami, Mysteryland, LIV en Story Miami, Pacha worldwide, Ministry of Sound London en Tomorrowland Belgium en Brasil. Me and two of my kids(17,20) were leaving chili's parking lot and i begin to joke with them that it was a perfect evening to see an ufo. I believe in ufo but my kids are totally sceptical about it. We jump in the car and I looked up and saw a light. I continue to joke with them and said, "look there, a ufo....hahahaha".... but at the time it was only that, a joke. We continued to watch it as it rapidly start to approach us. then the light started to dim out and we could see a dark form over it. My son then started to literally freak out. That thing came about 300 meters from us and it was a dark squared with rounded corners thing, cruising the sky, no sound whatsoever!!!!!!! The video doesn't reflect even 10% of the clarity of the sighting. unfortunately phone camaras are horrible, specially at dark. But it was so clear to us. it seemed to be the size of a car just crusing there, with almost the same color of the background. My son is still shacking. He never believed in anything paranormal. Do you need to wash them at all?nnLet’s look at the basics. Denim is a kind of cotton with a twill textile weave. Check out this photo: in a twill weave, the thread called the weft – the crosswise yarn - passes under at least two warp threads – those are the lengthwise yarns.nnIn most jeans, only these warp threads are dyed, meaning that these other threads, the weft threads, remain white. That’s why blue jeans are white inside. nnThat blue shade on the warp threads comes from a dye called indigo. Unlike some other dyes, indigo doesn’t penetrate the cotton. Instead, it sits atop the yarn, on the surface of each thread. nnOver time, molecules of indigo chip away, causing the fabric to fade.nnThis fade makes each pair unique, so much so that the FBI analyzes denim patterns when tracking criminals. The more you wear a pair, the more broken in they become. nnYou’ll see the appearance of fade patterns. Whiskers on the front, honeycomb patterns behind the knees and so on. And here’s where it gets – oh, wait. Wrong show.nnNot all jeans are created equally. Let’s divide them into two rough categories – washed and raw. Washed denim is just that – washed after dyeing, to make the fabric softer and reduce shrinkage.nnSometimes washed denim is artificially distressed to give it a broken-in or worn look. The fading of raw denim, on the other hand, happens naturally over time depending on the daily activities of the person wearing the jeans.nn The longer you go without washing these jeans, the more pronounced fading patterns will become, personalizing the pants.nnOnce you have a pair of jeans, you’ll hear numerous pieces of advice about caring for them. Most of this doesn’t apply across the board. nnFor example, companies like Hiut denim will ask you to wait at least 6 months before washing your jeans, because if you wash them early the indigo will wear off uniformly, robbing you of those unique fade patterns.nnAnd this is the heart of the whole “to wash or not to wash” question. The longer you go without washing a pair of jeans, the more pronounced the wearing pattern becomes. You’ll also preserve the indigo, as well as the stiff texture of the fiber.nnBut what happens if you don’t wash them? Won’t bacteria pile up, turning your lower hemisphere into a plague-ridden cesspool of filth? nnNot necessarily. In 2011 a microbiology student at the University of Alberta went, get this, 15 months without washing his jeans. He tested their bacterial content, along with the bacterial content of another pair that had been washed about two weeks beforehand. He found almost no difference. nnSo if you can’t wash them, what do you do to keep your blue jeans clean? You’ll hear some crazy stuff. Levi’s famously recommended freezing your jeans to kill bacteria and stave off any funky odors, but microbe expert Stephen Craig Cary says that’s a myth. nnMost bacteria in our pants comes from our skin, and a lot of these organisms are preadapted to low temperatures. Cary recommends using high temperatures – think 121 degrees Celsius for ten minutes – to rid the denim of bacteria. But unlike the yellow mating flashes of fireflies, the glow worms’ steady blue light has a more insidious purpose: it’s bait.nnThe strategy is simple. Many of the glow worms’ prey are insects, including moths, that navigate by starlight. With imposter stars all around, the insects become disoriented and fly into a waiting snare. Once the victim has exhausted itself trying to get free, the glow worm reels in the catch. nnThe prey is typically still alive when it arrives at the glow worm’s mouth, which has teeth sharp enough to bore through insect exoskeletons. nnGlow worms live in colonies, and researchers have noticed that individual worms seem to sync their lights to the members of their colony, brightening and dimming on a 24-hour cycle. There can be several colonies of glow worms in a cave, and studies have shown that different colonies are on different cycles, taking turns at peak illumination, when they’re most attractive to prey.nnNot surprisingly, the worms glow brighter when they’re hungry.nn--- How do glow worms glow?nnTheir light is the result of a chemical reaction. The worms break down a protein called luciferin using an enzyme, luciferase, in a specialized section of their digestive tract. "It's been looked at with Hubble, it's been looked at with Keck, it's been looked at in the infrared and radio and high energy, and every possible thing you can imagine, including a whole range of SETI experiments. Nothing has been found." nnWhile he and his colleagues are skeptical that the star's unique behavior is a sign of an advanced civilization, they can't not take a look.nnThe observations are scheduled for eight hours per night for three consecutive nights, starting Wednesday evening, Oct. 26. Siemion and two colleagues, , are traveling to the Green Bank Observatory in rural West Virginia to work with a new and more sensitive instrument recently installed on the telescope.nn"The Green Bank telescope is the largest fully steerable radio telescope on the planet, and it's the largest most sensitive telescope that's capable of looking at Tabby star given its position in the sky," he said. "We've deployed a fantastic new SETI instrument that connects to that telescope, that can look at many gigahertz of bandwidth simultaneously and many, many billions of different radio channels all at the same time so we can explore the radio spectrum very, very quickly."nnThe results of their observations will not be known for more than a month, because of the data analysis required to pick out patterns in the radio emissions from the region around the star. nnFirst reported a year ago by Yale astronomer Tabitha Boyajian, Tabby's star – more properly called KIC 8462852 – had been flagged by citizen scientists because of its unusual pattern of dimming. These volunteers were looking at planets as part of the internet project Planet Hunter, which allows the public to search for planets around other stars in data taken by the Kepler spacecraft, which has been monitoring 150,000 stars for regular dimming that might indicate a planet had passed in front of it.nnBut while most such dimming by transiting planets is brief, regular and blocks just a few percent or less of the light of the star, Tabby's star dimmed for days at a time, by as much as 20 percent, and at irregular intervals.nnWhile Boyajian, now at Louisiana State University, speculated that the irregular dimming might be explained by a swarm of comets breaking up as it approached the star, subsequent observations show the star is far more irregular than a comet swarm would produce. In fact, it seems to have been dimming at a steady rate for the past.nnSpeculation eventually arose that the dimming was caused by a Dyson structure: a massive orbiting array of solar collectors that physicist Freeman Dyson once proposed would be a natural thing for a civilization to build as it needed more and more energy to power it. Theoretically, such a structure could completely surround the star – what he termed a Dyson sphere – and capture nearly all the star's energy.nnHow likely is that?nn"I don't think it's very likely – a one in a billion chance or something like that – but nevertheless, we're going to check it out," said Dan Werthimer, chief scientist at Berkeley SETI. "But I think that ET, if it's ever discovered, it might be something like that. We tested two generic flashlights, one with Batteroos and the other without, side by side to see how much using the Batteroo sleeves would increase performance. We set the flashlights up to each hit a sensor inside a black box. The sensor would monitor how strong the beam is and how much it decreases over time. At the beginning of the test, both flashlights started out at 189 lux. After just 20 minutes, the flashlight without the Batteroo sleeves was at 133 lux which is already a loss of about 30%, while the flashlight with the Batteroo sleeves had only gone down to 176 lux. Fast forward to an hour, the regular flashlight went down to 100 lux while the Batteroo sleeve powered flashlight was at 167 lux, 67% higher power than the regular battery power flashlight. At the end of our experiment at 4 hours, the Batteroo powered flashlight was still going strong at 127 lux which is around 70% its original strength, while the normal battery powered flashlight has dimmed all the way to 43 lux which is just 20% its original strength. We work under the assumption that around 50% light intensity is considered too dim to function, and that would be the time the batteries would be taken out and replaced. Using just regular batteries you would throw the batteries out after just 70 minutes, but the Batteroo Boost powered batteries reached 50% after 390 minutes. That’s 5.5x longer lasting than regular batteries. That could make the real difference in emergencies where you would need that extra time with your flashlights.
