It became one of the first ever disco hits to also be released in this extended form.nnBy 1975, Summer had been living in Germany for eight years and had participated in several musical theatre shows. She had also released an album in Europe entitled Lady of the Night, written by Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte and produced by Bellotte, which had given her a couple of hit singles. She was still a complete unknown in her home country when she suggested the lyric "Love to Love You Baby" to Moroder in 1975. He turned the lyric into a full disco song and asked Summer to record it. The full lyrics were somewhat explicit and at first Summer said she would only record it as a demo to give to someone else. However, Summer's erotic moans and groans impressed Moroder so much that he persuaded her to release it as her own song, and "Love to Love You" became a moderate hit in the Netherlands.nnIn an interview in 1976, Summer responded to a number of questions that she claims she'd been asked about the process of recording the song: "Everyone's asking, 'Were you alone in the studio?' Yes, I was alone in the studio. 'Did you touch yourself?' Yes, well, actually I had my hand on my knee. 'Did you fantasize on anything?' Yes, on my handsome boyfriend Peter."nnnA tape of the song was sent to Casablanca Records president Neil Bogart in the U.S. and he played it at a party at his home. He was so impressed with the track that he continued to play it over and over all night. He later contacted Moroder and suggested that he make the track longer - possibly as long as twenty minutes. However, Summer again had reservations. She wasn't even sure of all the lyrics, but she imagined herself as an actress (namely Marilyn Monroe) playing the part of someone in sexual ecstasy. The studio lights were dimmed so that Summer was more or less in complete darkness as she lay on the floor.nnThe final recording lasted over sixteen minutes, and contained the sexiest "simulated" orgasms ever found on vinyl. According to the BBC, the song contained 23 "orgasms". By that point, the song was renamed "Love To Love You Baby." It took up the entire first side of the album of the same name, and was also released as a 12" single. Edited versions were also found on 7" vinyl.nnOriginally released in November 1975, the song became an international disco smash. In the U.S., it became Summer's first U.S. top 40 hit, spending two weeks at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in early 1976 and logged four weeks atop the Billboard U.S. disco chart, as well number three on the soul singles chart. In the UK, upon release in January 1976, it reached #4 on the UK Singles Chart despite the BBC's refusal to promote it. Recently she did a show about "creation" in which she took on among others, Ken Ham! So of course I watched it - how could I resist? One of Claire's nominees for Dim Bulb Of The Week was a guy named Christian Talour. She played some clips from his video called "Atheists are like toddlers" in which he makes some claims that really pissed me off. Now if you've watched my videos about debating Christians you've heard me talk about using a simple yes or no question to put your opponent in an impeachable position, and what sorts of reactions to expect when you do. And since Mr. Talour didn't win Claire's Dim Bulb Award, I decided to give him some attention, and show you how it works in the real world. I posted the question on his channel page: Can you cite any secular evidence which has not been and/or cannot be refuted, such as a contemporaneous record or eyewitness account from outside the Bible, that validates EVEN ONE of the magical characters or miraculous events described in it... YES or NO? And his answer is classically typical and predictable - change the subject to avoid giving an answer! Notice how he's done everything BUT answer the question I asked, even though his answer WAS yes? And at the end claims his "evidence" satisfied the parameters of the question, even though it's not even close to the kind evidence I asked for? As is typical in debates like this, I had to go back, remind him what the question was, and explain why he got it all wrong. Mr. Talour, you accused me of having a standard of evidence which is too high. But I'm pretty sure that if a man walked up to you on the street and claimed to be Jesus, even if he had ID and 12 disciples to vouch for him, you wouldn't believe him - maybe a toddler would, but I bet you'd want some kind of testable proof, right? So, in that situation, your standard of evidence would be the same as an atheist's -- you know, justifiable skepticism! But you're willing to scrap that standard, and put your faith 100% in a 2000 year old book of obvious, proven nonsense, fiction, and fairy tales, written by men who thought the earth was flat, and diseases were caused by demons - for which not one scrap of contemporaneous corroboration has ever been produced by anybody - ever! And you say atheists are mentally defective? Maybe you'd better think again! Well since Mr. Talour didn't win Claire's Dim Bulb Award, please join me in a salute to the newest recipient of my coveted "Giant Moron Award."
