A raid on Thailand’s Tiger Temple has uncovered 40 tiger cub carcasses, as authorities swoop on the controversial attraction. They were found stuffed in a freezer at the Buddhist site Wat Pa Luangta Bua Yannasampanno which is believed to be involved in animal cruelty and trafficking. Wildlife officials removed 40 of 137 big cats held at the privately-run attraction, and planned to return to take the rest and re-house them in state-owned sanctuaries. The temple located 140km from Bangkok started keeping and breeding tigers 15 years ago and became famous as a place where visitors could pet and take selfies with the big cats. Wildlife activists have accused the temple of supplying big cats to the black market. Former workers claimed the tigers were beaten, ill-fed and kept in small concrete cages. Some visitors reported animals appeared drugged. The monks deny all charges. The site has been closed to the public since the raid. Less

A leopard was killed and strung up after it attacked three villagers in the Purulia district, Saturday. The big cat purportedly entered the village after members of the community ventured into the nearby forest in search of jungle cocks. After injuring three villagers, an angry mob formed and killed the animal. A post mortem is being carried out to work out the cause of death. If the purring of Bianca (from the Roev Ruchey zoo in the city) and Dragon (from Chelyabinsk) is anything to go by then the patter of tiny paws might not be long away. Keepers say the two cats have been "sweet" on each other ever since they were introduced for the first time a week ago. Dragon was originally born in Munich before being brought to Russia, and will now be put out to stud in the Ruchey Zoo for the next five years. Staff there had been searching for a mate for the 12-year-old Bianca for quite some time and are keen to take care of her future potential cubs. Despite the fact that the two leopards seem to be gently greeting each other and purring they are in fact trying to establish which one is boss by leaving their smell on the ground, zoo staff say. A TIGER attack on a handler at Australia Zoo on Queensland's Sunshine Coast yesterday afternoon left tourists reeling and the handler in a serious but stable condition with neck wounds. Video shows a close up view of the attack, handlers rescuing the victim and pursued by the tiger, and airlift to hospital. Sorry, but no other footage available at the moment. The attack at 2.45pm Queensland time occurred towards the end of a feeding session and public show, when one tiger leapt up and embraced senior handler Dave Styles in what witnesses called a "bear hug" before wrestling the man into a nearby water feature. Grainy footage of the incident shows three other handlers running in to pull the man from under the water and take him away, but the man fell and the tiger pounced again before the other staff took him to safety. The tiger attacked the 32-year-old man on the neck, leaving two serious puncture wounds. The man had to be stabilised on site before being airlifted to Royal Brisbane Hospital where he reportedly underwent surgery for his wounds. Australia Zoo, founded by "croc hunter" Steve Irwin and run by his widow, Terri, is one of the biggest tourist attractions on the Sunshine Coast. Staff said yesterday's incident was "an accident" and "not an act of aggression". Zoo director Wes Mannion said the trainer had nine years' experience with big cats and raised the tiger since it arrived at the zoo as a cub. He said Australia Zoo was conducting an investigation in conjunction with workplace health and safety authorities. Australia Zoo keeps three Bengal and eight Sumatran tigers. The fate of the attacking tiger is yet to be decided. #financial_support_div{ display:none; position: absolute; width:300px; height:140px; margin-left: -150px; margin-top: -70px; /*- half of width and height */ top:50%; left:50%; padding: 5px; opacity:0.9; filter:alpha(opacity=90); z-index:1000; background-color:#000; color: white; } .close_box{ background: gray; color:#fff; padding:1px 3px; display:inline; position:absolute; right:1px; margin-right: -13px; margin-top: -13px; border-radius:3px; cursor:pointer; border: 1px #000 solid; } $(document).on("click",".close_box",function(){ $(this).parent().fadeTo(300,0,function(){ $(this).remove(); }); }); Loading the player ... It is now up to the municipalities to supply funding for food and for medicines and that is not just for Nikolaev, it is for all the schools throughout the country." M/S M/S W/S Zoo W/S Entrance to Nikolaev Zoo With news recently surfacing that the animals in Nikolaev Zoo are close to starvation due to a lack of government funding, campaigners and activists continued their daily struggle to keep the animals alive on Wednesday. Ukrainian resident and entrepreneur, South African Lionel de Lange, is just one campaigner engaged in a rescue mission at Nikolaev Zoo. For assistance, he contacted the Lawrence Anthony Earth Organisation (LAEO), who he is now working with to provide the animals with much needed food and emergency medical supplies. The government began to divert funds away from Nikolaev Zoo in January, which houses 5,735 animals including big cats, bears, monkeys, crocodiles, boa constrictors and elephants. Speaking about the situation, Lange explained how Ukraine's political crisis has led to a halt in government funding for all the country's zoos. The Nikolaev Zoo says it will not have the resources to take care of the animals' food needs until the end of April - when the weather gets warmer and entrance fees start mounting up. Video ID 20140415 022 C/U Snow leopard roaring W/S Snow leaopard roaring behind a rock SCRIPT Russia: Check out this rare sighting of a roaring snow leopard A snow leopard was sighted by scientists near Irkutsk in Russia on Tuesday. The scientists managed to film unique shots of the snow leopard, which is an endangered animal. This predator is a nocturnal animal and it's very difficult to catch a snow leopard on camera in its natural inhabitant. These cats are usually rather restrained in their emotions but this cat roared rather loudly. The snow leopard's population is diminishing and estimated to be around 4,5000-6,5000 big cats. These kids were having a great time at Australia Zoo’s tiger enclosure when one of the tigers became their unlikely playmate. They engaged the animal in an intense game of peek-a-boo through the glass, and reacted with delight as the big cat followed them from one end of the window to the next. Who has the heart to tell them that the ferocious feline was probably just thinking about how tasty they’d be for lunch? Credit: Davie MacRae Less
