"The Last Book" by Reinier Gerritsen is available online here: http://bit.ly/1rxVBD3nnThe world—and the word—is in the process of becoming less and less dependent on paper. Our reading habits, especially as they occur in public spaces, are subtly shifting each day. Reinier Gerritsen has taken up the current plethora of books and their readers on New York City’s subways as the proverbial canary-in-the-coal-mine, an indicator of the still-robust nature of public readership, in the face of its ostensible decline.nnWe joined Gerritsen on the subway in New York City, where he took us through his process of shooting. Of the chaotic, crowded cars, Gerritsen remarks, ‘The light is magnificent…it’s such a dense situation of people. A lot of sociological events are very visible in the Subway.’ Gerritsen’s photographs of people reading books on the subways began with modest observations and evolved into The Last Book, a series of unexpected, documentary portraits, and an illustrated index and bibliography charting readership. The Last Book is now available. Less

Dekotora is the image of Tokyo you have in your head — the anime-inspired signage, the flashing pachinko slots and the bright innocence of J-Pop — just on 18 wheels and moving at 100 kilometers per hour. It means, more or less, “decoration truck.” Which is pretty much exactly what it is — a long-haul truck whose driver has gone all Xzibit and tricked out the exterior with more chrome than Optimus Prime and more neon than Caesars Palace. By doing so, they’re expressing themselves in a way that makes them something more than the guy dropping off boxes at a loading dock. “I always take good care of my truck; by doing so, I’m actually taking good care of myself,” explains Takuya Sosogi, a truck driver who delivers vegetables all over Japan and the subject of our dekotora mini-documentary.
