The Western powers - led, as ever, by the US and UK - are determined to portray this momentous historic event as an imperial land-grab by Russia, and that it caused the subsequent civil war between Kiev and the breakaway provinces in the country's East.nnHowever, as this excellent documentary shows, the Russian government could see that the violent manner in which the elected Ukrainian leader Yanukovich had been ousted from power - with American fingerprints all over it - meant chaos would soon spread throughout Ukraine, and the majority ethnic Russian population in Crimea would be among the worst hit by neo-Nazi militias terrorizing people across the country whom they considered 'insufficiently loyal' to the US-selected regime.nnWhen President Yanukovich fled the capital on February 21st 2013, President Putin set in a motion a series of responses that would present the first real challenge to American imperial hegemony. In this documentary we learn that Yanukovich would have been killed if Russian Spetsnaz hadn't rescued him. Owen Everett is an Education Campaign worker at ForcesWatchnnWe are reaching new levels of militarisation of youth in the UK and Scotland. The Ministry of Defence have ramped up their recruitment efforts in the last few years. The most recent overall figures show that the military made 11,000 visits to schools in the UK in the academic year 2011-12, as opposed to just 1000 in 2008; more recent regional data show that a far higher proportion of state schools are visited than private schools, some receiving over 20 visits in a two-year period, and schools in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland are visited disproportionately more than schools in England, based on population.nnThere has also been a surge in the number of state school Combined Cadet Forces, as part of the Department for Education's Military Ethos in Schools programme. Most recently, the Prime Minister's Office and MOD have created 'The British Armed Forces: Learning Resource 2014', an extremely biased document targeting 5-16 year olds, which the Department for Education promoted in an email to every school in the country. The armed forces do not just 'engage' with schools and colleges to recruit children and young adults; the other main rationale is to 'provide positive information to influence future opinion formers'.nnThis is an invitation to an event exploring the military's engagement with young people in Scotland. SOTT 'Earth Changes' video summary of extreme weather events and environmental indicators of 'planetary upheaval' (seismic, volcanic, etc) in May 2015.nnWinter in the northern hemisphere officially ended in March, and yet May 2015 saw heavy snowfalls in parts of Norway, Russia, China and the US. Europe recorded its highest ever (official) May and June temperature - 44°C in Spain - during a brief heatwave, before the mercury plunged to as low as 8°C the following week. Like much of Siberia, northern China went from warm, dry weather - including sandstorms and wildfires - in April, to blizzards by the end of May, while spring snowfall and cold temperature records were broken in Russia.nnThere were at least four major tornado outbreaks in the US last month, generating some 460 tornado reports. Will the US break its 2011 record for highest number of tornadoes in one year? With the storms came hail, rain, and snow - lots of it. Texas was inundated with record-breaking rainfall that bought its 3-year-long drought to a chaotic end. There were also destructive tornadoes in New Zealand, Mexico, and Germany, which saw two tornado outbreaks.nnCalifornia's record-breaking drought continues, but Los Angeles saw its daily rainfall record smashed in May. Other parts of the US under water were Louisiana, Oklahoma and Alaska, which saw its 'worst flooding in decades', in part due to yet another bizarre spring heatwave. An 'apocalyptic' storm in Moscow flooded streets, while hailstorms turned streets into rivers of ice in Spain, Mexico, and Turkey, where cars were washed away in the coastal city of Izmir. Several huge sinkholes opened up - in the US, Turkey, the Canary Islands and Russia - swallowing gardens, street intersections, golf greens, and cars.nnAnother deadly earthquake - officially considered an aftershock - rocked Nepal on May 12th, just three weeks after the country was flattened by its worst seismic event in 80 years. Wolf Volcano in the Galapagos erupted for the first time in decades, followed a couple of days later by an explosive eruption of Mount Shindake in southern Japan. Next up was a magnitude 8.5 earthquake off the Japanese coast, the country's strongest since that magnitude 9.0 earthquake in March 2011.nnSome are asking 'when, if ever, will the climate change'? Cherise Morris Visits Sonic Watermelons To Discuss Divesting from Prisons and Dismantling the Prison Industrial Complexnnby Reza Corinne CliftonnnPROVIDENCE, RI - "Columbia First US University To Divest from Private Prisons." That was the title and topic of a June 23, 2015 article written by Jenn M. Jackson, a writer who focuses on politics, news, and culture as the Assistant Editor for The Black Youth Project (BYP) - where the article appeared. BYP is an organization and multimedia news blog that serves as a "platform that highlights the voices and ideas of black millennials" by working with young people on "producing research about the ideas, attitudes, decision making, and lived experiences of black youth." nnI've been following and admiring the work of BYP for years, and I'm frequently pulled in by their headlines. That was the case in this instance too, but this time I was also interested due to the movement-building I've observed and individual relationships I have with at least a dozen scholars and activists working on "reforming prisons," "abolishing prisons," ending "legal slavery," dismantling the "prison industrial complex," and "ending the school to prison pipeline." nnAccording to Jackson, the actions followed a period in which "Columbia held approximately 220,000 shares in a company called G4S, the world’s largest private security firm, and Corrections Corporation of America (CCA), the largest private prison company in the country." The policy-change, explains Jackson, "sets a precedent regarding how universities in this country align themselves with private corporations." She goes on to say that "[w]hen those business firms are harmful, violent, and exploitative of certain racial, ethnic, gender, and sexual groups, these schools should seriously consider what their financial support for these companies means to students, staff, and alumni."nnWhat does this mean as far as the movement and awareness-raising happening nationally and globally? What are the other trends - historically and currently - we should be examining as we talk about racial disparities in prisons and problems within the prison industrial complex? "And what role do private prisons play in exacerbating incarceration rates and abuses faced by prisoners?nnAt Columbia, it was many students "who protested via sit-ins, teach-ins, and other public displays of concern for the University’s involvement and support for private prisons," so to answer and discuss my questions, I reached out to Cherise Morris, a Brown University student and member of the campus organization Students Against the Prison Industrial Complex (SAPIC). In addition to her organizing work, Morris recently published an informative and artistic zine to provide "a brief introduction to the massive entity that encompasses the prison-industrial complex, its historical legacy, and its modern manifestations inside of and beyond prison walls." The third stop on this now well-underway journey is a land once feared by tourists all over the world. I remember a time when even saying the names of towns such as Bogota or Medellin as possible travel destinations conjured fear and confusion in one's friends and family. Those faces haven't completely gone away as we saw when we put Colombia squarely on our map but the violent reputation of the country certainly has.nnA modern and world-class capital, Bogota is a city I would recommend be on anyone's itinerary, not least because it is a great bridge for those coming from the North who want to discover the South, but are a little bit scared of going "down there..." It has become quite a sophisticated place, filled with globally-aware people, a functioning urban plan, restaurants to die for and Uber, what more could you ask for? nnThe rest of the country is chockfull of wonderful escapades too, as you'll see above, from Choco to Cartagena and worth every minute you spend there, hopefully going as far as Santa Marta to visit with the Mamos (spiritual guides who live in the mountains.) This is a documentary movie uncovering the process of building a wooden house with hand tools from local materials starting from forest till the living space.nn"I built my house from trees that I felled with an axe and two man crosscut saw in my own forest. I did it following the research of old carpenter's calendar that coniferous trees should be felled in January's first days when the new moon rises and the deciduous trees should be felled in the winter time during the old moon. In winter time trees are sleeping and the juice and moisture content is very low in them. As time passes timber felled in winter becomes light and strong.nnIn the building process I used mostly traditional carpenters hand tools - axes, hand saws, timber framing chisels and slicks, old Stanley planes, augers, draw knives and mostly human energy. All the ground work for fundaments and the basement earth digging was done by hand with shovels. The foundation consists mostly of bigger and smaller rocks and boulders. Lime, sand and concrete mixture are using only in small amounts - to hold the boulders together. The visible part over the ground level - boulder mosaic has been masoned with hand split local granite.nThe House has been built based on the western part of Latvia - Kurland/Kurzeme (German influence) historical wooden architecture typical technique - Timber Frame construction with sliding log walls between the posts. House is two carpentry technique union - Timber Frame (that is typical in France, Germany, Great Britain, North America and other countries) and traditional Latvian log building technique, between the logs using moss from the local swamp.nnIn the walls, timber frame and roof construction there I used only wood joints and wooden pegs to hold the main construction together - no nails, screws or steel plates. Walls are insulated with 250mm thick dry pine and larch shaving layer (leftover from the local cabinet makers workshop). Overall exterior wall thickness is 50cm. In the walls (except wind vapour breathable membrane over the roof) has not been used any plastic or modern synthetic materials.nnTo preserve the wood from the spoiling, fame posts, sills, top beams and final cladding boards are treated with fire and pine tar mixed with Tung oil. This wood preservation technique was adapted from the Japanese traditional wood preservation technique Shou Sugi Ban (焼杉板).nnExterior cladding boards recoating each 10-15 years with Tung oil and pine or birch tar mixture, the house can last more than 500 years. As an example is taken Norwegian stave churches that stands more than 500 years until nowadays.nnRoofing is three layer white oak shingles (each 10mm thick, 120mm wide and 720mm long) laid in two directional technique. Overall amount of shingles used is 15 000 pieces. Roof walls are insulated with ecological wood fibre wool and wood fibre panels. Over the wood fibre panels are plastered natural plaster - mixture of sand, clay powder, lime, linen fibre, salt, wheat flour. Overall thickness of the plaster is 20mm and over all amount of plaster used on the walls are 5000 kilos. It works also as thermal mass and improves energy performance.nnExterior measurements of the house is 6.5 x 13 meters. Living space in both floors are 120sq/m. The house is being heated with clay plastered brick bread oven and smaller oven made of clay tiles in the kitchen. To heat up both floors of the house, when outside it is minus 10 degrees (Celsium) only small oven is heated once a day. When freeze gets below -15, -20 C, we heat up the bread oven. Once it is heated, because of it’s thermal mass of 5 tons, it keeps the warmth 2-3 days. To heat up all the house (120 sq/m) in the winter time we use not more than 4 m3 of dry firewood. This is 2nd winter we are living there and we still heat up the house with the leftovers of lumber from the building process. This year thousands of refugees crossed the sea from Turkey and arrived on the island as well, looking for a safe haven in Europe. nnFilmmakers Philip Brink and Marieke van der Velden invited European tourists and Syrian refugees to talk to one another about life while sitting on a little bench overlooking the sea.nnThe result is a short documentary in which the viewer wanders over the island and is made witness of conversations about war, fleeing, home, work, cars and pets. From 19-21 July 2013, 280 delegates from 26 countries gathered for the International Conference for Human Right and Peace in the Philippines (ICHRPP). They are victims of human rights violations, advocates for human rights and peace, members of people’s organizations, academe, faith-based institutions, people’s lawyers.nnTogether, they articulated the progressive framework of human rights and the underlying sense of violations as a systemic problem rooted in monopoly capitalism and elite domination of economic, social, cultural and political life. The conference universally affirmed the primacy of people’s struggles for the attainment and protection of human rights and just and lasting peace.nnPrior to the holding of the international conference, more than 100 delegates participated in solidarity missions conducted in several areas in the country, including Central Luzon, Southern Tagalog, three regions in Mindanao, Cordillera, and the National Capital Region. The missions looked into large-scale mining, landgrabbing, forced evacuation and the plight of internal refugees due to militarization in the countryside, targeted areas of extensive political repression by Oplan Bayanihan, forced eviction and demolitions in the urban areas, trade union struggles, and the situation of political prisoners in detention centers.nnThe ICHRPP was organized by Karapatan (Alliance for the Advancement of People's Rights), the Ecumenical Voice for Justice and Peace (EcuVoice) and the International Coordinating Committee for Human Rights in the Philippines (founded and launched during the conference as the International Coalition for Human Rights in the Philippines), in cooperation with the Peace for Life network and the International League of Peoples' Struggles.nnVideo coverage of the conference is a project of Kodao Productions (Philippines and Europe) and the International Coalition for Human Rights in the Philippines in cooperation with Taiwan Foundation for Democracy.   Less
