We were dry camped together for several days and had a great time chatting about RVing and all the mods, repairs and upgrades we have done to our rigs.nnI thought other RVing folks would love to get a look at the system and he was kind enough to let me video it and give us some details on the equipment used and how he installed it all.nnI think you'll agree he has done a beautiful job on the installation and wiring. I can attest to the fact that it works really well too. The commercial power is quite unreliable and he wants this system for both back up purposes and to save some money (if possible). We look at some solar power basics then dive into: - Calculating your loads and why efficiency is so important - Picking a solar panel - what do all the numbers mean? - How should I wire the panels? Series, Parallel, or some combination? - Why use batteries, and how many of what type? - What's a charge controller and why use one? What does MPPT mean? - How to get 120 volts AC for your appliances from DC? All about inverters. - A summation including an alternate design using just batteries, a charger, inverter and some electrical gear. - And countless other details, hints and kinks! This video is not designed to be a complete reference into this subject, but rather a splattering of the kinds of things you have to consider, some of the calculations you will have to make, and what equipment you will need. Details here: http://www.thediyworld.com/blog/?p=1569nnI took the entire day to rewire my tiny house solar power system with proper fuses and wires.nnFirst I took all the temporary clamps and connectors off my tiny house solar battery bank and rewired them properly. There are only a few lines connecting to the battery bank now.nnThe solar MPPT charge controller output is connected first. Next comes the DC power lines which feed the tiny house on wheels.nnI connected a wire directly from the positive terminal of the battery bank and wired it into my massive 80 Amp fuse block which I got at the tag sale at the auction house a few weeks ago.nnThe output side of the fuse block then goes to the living room and upstairs of my tiny house, providing DC power.nnI also connected a wire from another 80 Amp fuse on the fuse block which goes to a second smaller fuse block. The smaller fuses range from 5 Amps to 20 Amps in size. These fuses lead into the kitchen and bathroom of my tiny house.nnNext I hooked up my pure sine wave power inverter to the battery bank of my tiny home. I used doubled up 4 gauge wires in parallel to provide more current capacity to the inverter.nnI connected a surge strip into one of the plugs of the inverter so provide AC power right there in the kitchen. An extension cord leads through the tiny house into the living room. This is temporary for now until I get proper AC wiring in the tiny house. This wire feeds my laptop and monitor as needed.nnLater I plan to set up DC power in the living room for the laptop, cell phones and other small devices.nnFinally I connected a two port cigarette lighter socket into a 20 amp fuse in the smaller fuse block and connected it under the kitchen counter. This powers my dedicated weather station server which is my old netbook. Now that I have my Harbor Freight engine hoist built, I can start pulling out the forklift battery cells from the bed of my truck one at a time.nnThe entire forklift battery bank weighs a total of about 2,000 pounds. But the single battery cells only weigh about 100 pounds each.nnThe first problem I had to solve was to move the heavy battery bank further back in the bed of the truck so that my hydraulic engine hoist could reach the battery cells to pull them out.nnI first tried to move the battery bank by using the engine hoist to pull it upwards and then use my legs to push the battery back to the tailgate of the truck. This failed. The battery would not move at all.nnI decided to try extending the arm of the engine hoist by using a 2x4 to reach over the top of the battery. This harbor freight engine hoist has a one ton capacity but with the arm extended the engine hoist can handle 500 pounds. I figured that with a 2x4 extension it could easily still handle 100 pounds.nnBut this idea failed miserably. The board kept slipping off the engine hoist arm.nnI got a smart idea to drive the truck backwards slowly and then hit the brakes hard to slide the battery back some. Bit by bit I carefully slid the entire forklift battery back to the end of the truck bed so the engine hoist could reach it.nnThe next problem was to move the hydraulic engine hoist over to a better place to work. The ground is very muddy from constant rain so it was quite a job just moving the engine hoist. My feet kept slipping around making it tough going.nnI finally got everything in place properly and connected the engine hoist to a battery cell. I did this by using a ratchet strap and tying a loop in it. One part went over the battery negative terminal and the other end went on the engine hoist hook.nnI started to slowly and carefully lift out the battery cell. I would crank a little bit on the hydraulic ram and then tap the side of the battery pack with a hammer to loosen it up. The battery cell slid upwards a tiny little bit at a time.nnI got a little bit too over confident and cranked too much on the lift at one time. This caused the terminal connector to break off and fly through the air.nnThere is a bunch of cement spilled in the sides of the forklift battery. Somehow this expanded and jammed in the battery cells very tightly. Normally you will not have as much trouble as I am having pulling out forklift battery cells for off grid solar power use.nnI decided try the other half of the forklift battery. The steel case is divided into two halves. This means that I might be able to pull out the battery cells from that side easier.nnI connected my hoist and, very carefully this time, I pulled out a single battery cell. When I got it up almost fully out of the case I got up on the bed of the truck and lifted the battery cell by hand the rest of the way. Another snowy day but work at the off grid homestead must go on. While waiting for the new solar forklift battery to be delivered I decided to connect up the old forklift battery to the tiny house on wheels for now.nnThe old forklift battery, for those who are new here, is one I bought for less than scrap value to use as a backup for my tiny house solar power. I have a newer reconditioned forklift battery on the way which will be my main solar power bank.nnBut for now I wanted to try out the old batteries and see how well they will perform.nnIn the mean time the snow makes things a bit messy to work with so I did not get to take my camera with me.nnI am getting more eggs from my chickens again. One of my tiny little bantam hens laid her first egg ever. It is so small next to the others.nnI brought all the batteries over to the tiny house on wheels and put them on a pallet behind the back bumper of the trailer. Then I wired them all up to my tiny house solar power system. I fully disconnected the golf cart batteries from the tiny house.nnThe forklift batteries are the only batteries I have connected to the tiny house at this time.nnThe sun was shining a bit so I was pushing some power into the old forklift battery bank but it was not enough to charge them up fully.nnI took my new hydrometer outside in the cold to test out the specific gravity of the forklift battery cells. I had to leave the gauge outside for a while to get adapted to the outside temperature first.nnIt was quite a reach to get to the acid level in each battery because these are very tall batteries. The hydrometer barely reached the acid level in the batteries but I was able to test them all. These old forklift batteries are all reading a low level of charge. The specific gravity on them was all quite low and reading in the middle of the red range on the gauge.nnI am not surprised though because these are old and badly sulfated battery cells. They will take some work to get back up and working well for my off grid solar powered home.nnIn the afternoon, after the sun went down, I connected my little 800 watt harbor freight generator to a shop battery charger and put about 20 amps continuous power into the forklift battery bank. I ran the generator all evening while I worked in the tiny house on wheels. This gives the batteries some charge while I was using power inside at the same time. I had a sunny day so I got to really test out my old forklift batteries on my tiny house solar power. I also had a special delivery today which I will tell cover in detail later.nnSince it was a bright, sunny winter day I was able to put the old forklift battery bank into manual equalize mode. My Tristar MPPT solar charge controller allows me to manually start an equalization. This means that the solar charge controller hits the battery bank with over 15 volts for a certain amount of time. This boils the acid in the battery cells and mixes the electrolyte up better. With time the heavier acid settles down and the lighter water rises. This creates an unbalanced chemistry in the battery and causes uneven distribution of power in the battery cell.nnBoiling the fluid in the battery with a higher voltage mixes the fluids better and also breaks up the lead sulfate on the battery plates. This brings the battery up closer to its full power capacity.nnWhile at Tractor Supply the other day I found a manual/automatic battery charger on sale. It was on clearance because it was stocked as a Christmas gift item. After the holidays they need to clear out old stock to prepare for new spring items. So I got an awesome deal on this charger.nnThe battery charger has a 10 amp setting and can be set to manual mode which allows me to put 10 amps at 14.8 volts into my forklift batteries as long as I want. This allows me to run devices inside my tiny house on wheels when the sun is down even though the batteries are not running at full capacity.nnThese old forklift batteries are badly sulfated. They were abused and I expect it will take a long time before they are performing well in my off grid solar application. But they are only temporary anyway until the reconditioned forklift battery arrives.nnWhich, by the way, happened on this day. In the afternoon hours a van pulled in carrying my new/reconditioned forklift battery. This is a 3 year old 12 volt battery bank rated at 750 AH. And it comes with a one year warranty.nnThis forklift battery will become the main power source for my tiny house when the sun is not generating power through the solar panels.nnI expect the new forklift battery to last me at least 20 years in my solar powered home.nnI used my harbor freight engine hoist to get the battery raised off the bed of the van while they drove it out from under the battery. Then I lowered it onto the ground for now.nnI have to fix my truck brakes before I can get the battery over to the tiny house.nnI plan to put the battery into the bed of the truck and then drive the truck over to the back side of the tiny house. Then lift the battery out with the HF engine hoist and lower it to the ground.
