The phone is set to challenge Apple and Samsung in the smartphone market. The YotaPhone 2 has a 4.7-inch (12 -centimetre) electronic paper display on its rear side, which uses less energy than a traditional screen. It also includes a 5-inch (12.7-centimetre), 1080p AMOLED screen, a Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, a 2500mAh battery, and an 8-megapixel front-facing camera. The YotaPhone 2 costs £555 ($870.57; €707.22) at the YotaPhone pop-up store in London's Shoreditch district. Customers can also buy the phone direct from YotaPhone in 20 European countries and the Middle East for a cost of €700 ($861.75). Martynov said that some critics initially thought it would be impossible to design a double-sided device. He added that he believed consumers "are looking for a much more intelligent way to communicate." The quest for immortality is one of man’s eternal goals. Short of that, a team of scientists in the US are planning tests on pet dogs to see whether a drug commonly in organ transplants could help extend their lifespan. Developed as an anti-rejection drug for patients who have just undergone kidney transplants, rapamycin has recently been shown to extend the lives of mice by more than 10%. “It’s not just lifespan that is extended but many age-related declines in function are also improved by Rapamycin,” says Matthew Kaeberlein, associate professor of Pathology at Washington University, Seattle. “So cardiac function is improved, cancer seems to be delayed, immune function – at least to some extent – is improved, cognitive function is improved.” According to the scientists, the drug works by targeting a protein that regulates the rate at which cells in the body reproduce, while increasing its ability to manage and recycle waste. Their contention is that if it proves effective in dogs, it may work in humans too, and could prove a game changer in the field of preventative medicine. “This is a much more efficient approach to promoting health than waiting until people are sick with a disease and treating a disease at that point,” says Kaeberlein. They believe pet dogs should provide a more realistic test than lab mice of how the drug would work in humans, as pets are subject to the same environmental influences and the same age-related diseases as their masters. “One of the most amazing things about dogs is that they are more variable than any species on the planet. All you have to do is put a Great Dane and a Chihuahua side by side and even a little kid can tell you ‘Yes this is an incredibly variable species’,” says Daniel Promislov, Professor of Pathology and Biology at the University of Washington. The researchers hope the trial, which will be carried out on around a dozen dogs, will produce rapid results, both on the drug’s effects on heart function and other health measures, as well as any possible side-effects. The CIA is facing the most damaging moment in its history as details of its post 9/11 terror suspect interrogation methods were unveiled in Washington. The long-delayed report from the Senate Intelligence Committee detailed the so-called ‘enhanced interrogation techniques’. They concluded the techniques failed to yield life-saving information, and that the CIA misled the government on the nature and extent of the methods. Costing 40 million dollars, it is the result of five years of research into six million internal CIA documents. Only a 480-page executive summary was allowed to be released after a battle between the CIA and the Senate committee. The vice-chair of the committee Senator Saxby Chambliss said that the release of the report was a mistake that could put US national security in jeopardy. Dianne Feinstein, chair of the committee said, “The CIA’s actions a decade ago are a stain on our values and our history. The release of this 500-page summary cannot remove that stain, but it can and does say to our people and the world that America is big enough to admit when it’s wrong and is confident enough to learn from its mistakes”. Among the report’s findings: i) enhanced interrogation techniques were not an effective way to gather intelligence ii) the CIA provided Congress, the White House, media and American public with inaccurate information about the programme and its effectiveness iii) CIA management was inadequate and deeply flawed iv) techniques were far more brutal than people were led to believe v) actionable intelligence that was otherwise unavailable was not obtained using these coercive interrogation techniques Republican politicians are expected to challenge the findings, two of them called the report’s release reckless and irresponsible. “Should the CIA be criticised or decorated, as former vice president Cheney has suggested? The report has sparked another nasty political fight in Washington straight along party lines. The issue whether torture directly leads to results, thus, more security, is controversial – even among experts,” explains Euronews correspondent Stefan Grobe. The US put facilities on high alert in expectation of violent fallout from the report. Governments around the world will also be worried by the revelations. Sport is among the city’s priority and hosting the first ever European games, scheduled to run from June 12-28 next year, is top of the agenda. Simon Clegg, chief operating officer of the European Games 2015 said: ‘‘It does not matter how much oil is in the Caspian, the one commodity you can not buy is time. We are on a time critical path here. The opening ceremony has to be delivered on 12th of June. There is no scope for delay.’‘ The former chief executive of the British Olympic Association, who is now responsible for the preparation of the 2015 European Games in the Azerbaijan capital, added he has no reasons to be worried about the readiness of the event. Of the 18 venues that will host the competition, the majority are ready. Concerning the rest, the venues are reportedly on track to be completed in time such as the main arena. Euronews reporter Denys Kulyk said: ‘‘The Olympic Stadium is a symbol of the European Games, it will host the opening and closing ceremonies and will be a stunning example of this competition’s legacy. After the Games it will become the home ground for Azerbaijan’s national football team and will host four matches at Euro 2020.’‘ The price tag of the Olympic stadium, which will have a capacity of 68 000 people, is more than 500 million euros. It should be completed by February 2015. Javid Najafov, is the project’s senior engineer and said: ‘‘This is the biggest construction in Azerbaijan and has been transformed in a very short period of time. Everything you see around here has been built in just two years. Just two years ago it was a swamp and had some ponds over here. It seems even the traffic jams in Baku won’t hamper the smooth-running of the Games. Like at the London Olympics, during the event there will be special traffic lanes reserved strictly for participants and officials of the Games. Panos Protopsaltis, Baku 2015 Director of Transport said: ‘‘What we are doing for the duration of the Games time is trying to avoid all of that (traffic) – going around the city rather than through the city. So the plan that you see here there in blue is the Games route network. In other words it’s the routes that we will use for our Games operations. Also working hard for the fast-approaching competition are the athletes themselves, just like two-time Olympic silver medalist in wrestling and the ambassador of the Games, Ravshan Bayramov. Bayramov said: ‘‘There are Pan-American Games, Asian Games, so it makes sense to have a European Games as well. Hopefully, the inaugural edition will be a success for my country.’‘ Polishing their program, which they will present at the Games in June, are the home artistic gymnasts. Marianna Vasilyeva, head coach of Azerbaijan artistic gymnastics team said: ‘‘Any federation of any European country can participate at the world and European championships. For the European Games, just like the Olympics, you need to qualify.’‘ Volunteers for the opening and closing ceremonies continue to fine tune their routines. The final preparations for athletes are also being carried out at the Games village. Meanwhile countless cups of coffee have been drunk in the office of the Baku 2015 organizing committee, which has 1200 workers helping to make sure of a successful Games. On the future of the Games Clegg said: ‘‘How will we measure the success of the European Games? There are a number of ways. First of all coming from sport, I want to insure that 6,000 athletes from 49 countries leave here saying this was a fantastic sporting occasion. Because if they want to come for the next European Games than of course broadcasters will want to continue to show the television footage from the next European Games. The European Space Agency’s (ESA) Technology Transfer Programme office hopes the mission will facilitate the use of space technology and know-how for non-space uses. This technology has been ‘translated’ for use across a wide range of daily activities. It has been applied for use in disease diagnoses, bedbug detection, a new generation of submarines, and much more. The Ptolemy instrument on Rosetta uses a gas analyser designed to ‘smell’ the comet and analyse samples. And here on Earth, Oxford Micro Medical has provided a medical interface of that technology. Frank Salzgeber is the head of ESA’s Technology Transfer Programme office. He explained how instruments have been adapted for use in medical diagnoses. “What the company has done now, in a spin-off in 2011, they started to build a small device which can detect bacterias, which are normally causing stomach injuries and infections, which lead to cancer”, he said. This same instrument aboard the Philae Lander has been used to successfully diagnose tuberculosis in sub-Saharan Africa. To do this, it detects chemicals associated with the disease. Another application is the detection and tracking of bugs, such as bedbugs. “Another interesting technology in the food sector is also based on the mass spectrometer”, Salzgeber explained, adding: “A company, called Insect, is a spin-off company which is also supported in our Incubation Centre in the United Kingdom. They have used this technology to look for the chemical footprints of bugs and to detect bugs where you do not want to have bugs. So, in your hotel room, but also in food production and storage, where you really have to see where there are neighbours that you don’t really want to have in your food storage.” The transfer of space technologies is included in the ESA space programmes from the very beginning in order to maximise investment and the impact on our life. “With a lot of research organisations, really, we foster and educate them to think about the dual use of space and non space, right at the beginning. Especially when you have a lifetime of a project of 10 years, the spin-off has to drop out right away. And this we have seen especially in Rosetta”, Salzgeber said. Technology transfer strengthens European industry by identifying new business opportunities for providers of space technology and systems. This is the case for Cedrat Technologies, a high tech SME based in the French Innovation Valley, close to Grenoble. Their MIDAS dust analysing instrument is already aboard the Rosetta probe. And the French firm has transferred its space knowledge to other applications, such as a device used during heart surgery. Cedrat Technology Business Engineer François Barillot enlarged on the uses of the device. “We provided a “stabilisation device” which enables us to control vibrations. When a surgeon performs open-heart surgery, the heart trembles inside the rib cage; usually what they do is to stop the heart, which is relatively risky. What this device does is control the heart vibrations, to reduce tremors and allow the surgeon to work in acceptable conditions while the heart is still beating”, he explained. The same concept is being tested elsewhere, even on sports fields. Stability is key when you are skiing at high speeds, for example. On the snow, as in space, this device allows people to avoid dangerous vibrations. “We have transferred this technology to be able to control the vibrations of a ski”, said Barillot. “And in this case it was a ski designed for speed. We were able to increase or decrease the trembling, to eventually prevent the ski from vibrating.” From the early days of space exploration, the missions have always been useful to life on Earth. Just months before the start of the revolution in Ukraine and Russia’s annexation of Crimea just over 50% of Ukrainians were against joining NATO and only 40% supported the idea of Alliance membership. However, opinion changed once Moscow had taken Crimea and hostilities flared in eastern Ukraine with over 50% of Ukrainians in favour of NATO membership while just 43% said they were against it. “When Ukraine-Russia relations turned more and more complicated and the people, who thought Russia was a friendly country, with a friendly policy, changed their minds, the situation changed,” explained Valeriy Khmelko, President of Kyiv International Institute of Sociology. NATO-Ukraine relations formally began in 1991, when Kyiv joined the North Atlantic Cooperation Council. After the“Orange Revolution” in Ukraine, newly elected President Viktor Yushchenko was invited to the NATO summit several times. The Ukrainian government (with Yulia Tymoshenko as prime-minister) had hoped that Ukraine would join the NATO Membership Action Plan at the Bucharest Summit in 2008 but it wasn’t to be. “The official version from the countries that didn’t back Ukraine in the Membership Action Plan was that the Ukrainian people didn’t support it. And that was the case because at that time only 17-20% of Ukrainians supported the idea of joining NATO,” said former Ukrainian Prime Minister, Yulia Tymoshenko. In 2010, Viktor Yanukovych became president and introduced a law of neutrality, which doesn’t permit Kyiv to seek membership of any military-political alliances. Oleksandr Sushko, Research director of the Institute for Euro-Atlantic Cooperation explains: “There was a hope that non-alignment would serve as “payment” to Russia, it would appease Moscow, and Russia would recognise Ukraine as a state, including its borders and territorial integrity. However, we have seen that that wasn’t the case and naive of Ukraine to believe so,” Ukraine’s decision to change its status and no longer declare itself neutral places the country in the same position it held in 2010. The Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) is an independent anthropomorphic spacesuit that provides environmental protection, mobility, life support, and communications for astronauts performing extra-vehicular activity (EVA) in Earth orbit. Introduced in 1981, it is a two-piece semi-rigid suit, and is currently one of two EVA spacesuits used by crew members on the International Space Station (ISS), the other being the Russian Orlan space suit... Suit components The EMU, like the Apollo/Skylab A7L spacesuit, was the result of years of research and development. It consists of a Hard Upper Torso (HUT) assembly, a Primary Life Support System (PLSS) which incorporates the life support and electrical systems, arm sections, gloves, an Apollo-style "bubble" helmet, the Extravehicular Visor Assembly (EVVA), and a soft Lower Torso Assembly (LTA), incorporating the Body Seal Closure (BSC), waist bearing, brief, legs, and boots. Prior to donning the pressure garment, the crew member puts on a Maximum Absorbency Garment (MAG) (basically a modified incontinence diaper – Urine Collection Devices (UCDs) are no longer used), and possibly a Thermal Control Undergarment (long johns). The final item donned before putting on the pressure suit is the Liquid Cooling and Ventilation Garment (LCVG)... After donning the LCVG, the astronaut then puts on the LTA, before entering the airlock. The astronaut then dons the HUT, connects the LCVG umbilical to the umbilical in the HUT, and then locks the two parts of the suit together using the Body Seal Closure. Once the suit is turned on and checked out, the astronaut dons a "Snoopy cap", a brown and white fabric communications cap dating back to the Apollo days, which incorporates a pair of earphones and microphones, allowing the EVA astronaut to communicate with both the crew members in the orbiter and ground controllers in Houston. After donning the "Snoopy cap", the gloves and helmet are then locked on, pressurizing the suit. The suit's regulator and fans activate when the servicing umbilicals are removed and the suit reaches an internal pressure of 4.3 psi (30 kPa). A typical EMU can support an astronaut for 8.5 hours, with 30 minutes of reserves in the case of primary life support failure. To perform an EVA from the shuttle, the cabin pressure was reduced from 14.7 psi to 10.2 psi for 24 hours, after which an astronaut had to pre-breathe for 45 minutes. For EVAs on board the ISS, the astronaut must pre-breathe for about four hours... Manufacturer The EMU hardware and accessories (PLSS, helmet, communications cap, and locking rings for the helmet and gloves), is manufactured by Hamilton Standard (now the Hamilton Sundstrand division of UTC Aerospace Systems) out of Windsor Locks, Connecticut, while the suit's soft components (the arms of the HUT and the entire LTU) are produced by ILC Dover (a former division of Playtex) out of Frederica, Delaware... History Upon receiving the contract to build the EMU in 1974, Hamilton United and ILC Dover delivered the first EMU units to NASA in 1982... The first EVA of the new EMU finally occurred on STS-6 when Story Musgrave and Donald Peterson went out in the payload bay of the Space Shuttle Challenger and tested techniques to lower the launch cradle of a solid-fuel upper stage used to boost a Tracking and Data Relay Satellite (TDRS-A) into a geo-stationary orbit. Other EVAs followed on the Shuttle, notably those on STS-41-B (the first Manned Maneuvering Unit flight), STS-41-C (the Solar Max repair mission), and STS-51-A (where two stranded satellites were retrieved and returned to Earth), but the majority of EMU uses occurred on the servicing missions of the Hubble Space Telescope... With the building of the ISS, Hamilton Sundstrand and ILC Dover refined the existing Shuttle EMU by making the suit modular. This allowed the EMU to be left on the ISS for up to two years and resized on-orbit to fit various crew members... Currently, the ISS EMU and the Russian ORLAN are used by crews of all nationalities on the International Space Station. The two EMUs are stored within the Quest Joint Airlock. Future use and proposed replacement NASA continues to use the EMU on the ISS but a Z series suit may eventually take its place... Less

Could robots and artificial intelligence one day take over the human race? Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to eradicate disease and poverty, but scientists say researchers must not create something uncontrollable. Experts have now signed an open letter calling on scientists to take care to avoid the potential ‘pitfalls’ of such technology. The letter was signed by famous physicist Stephen Hawking, Skype co-founder Jaan Tallinn and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, along with some of the top minds from many universities, including Harvard. Francesca Rossi, professor of Computer Science at Padua and Harvard universities, was among those to sign the letter. Euronews asked why so many scientists felt the need to put pen to paper. Professor Francesca Rossi: “Some say we shouldn’t worry… That the machines are not absolutely intelligent. But others claim machines will soon be as intelligent as a human being – perhaps more so – and they may turn against us, etc. Neither extreme position is reasonable. It is reasonable to take a constructive approach to the subject, to try to build more intelligent machines, to check their behaviours and to pay attention to security. So, this letter and the much longer document associated with it were written with precisely this intention: to be constructive and to encourage research projects in artificial intelligence. But also in other disciplines, such as philosophy, psychology, economics, etc. This will lead to the construction of intelligent, but also safe, machines.” Claudio Rocco, euronews: “And now a bit of a leading question. Could these intelligent machines one day overwhelm man? We are limited by the laws of biology, but, one day, could we see robots crushing men?” Professor Francesca Rossi: “I don’t see how such a catastrophic scenario could naturally emerge from these machines. They will be able to change their behaviour over time, but within the boundaries of what was encoded within them in the beginning. There is, however, certainly a need to build intelligent machines that can be checked.” euronews: “Looking at situations such as the one played out in the film ‘Her’, where a lonely writer develops an unlikely relationship with his computer operating system: would this really be possible? Or is it purely science fiction?” Professor Francesca Rossi: “There are already machines capable of interacting with humans. Robots that keep elderly or sick people company, for example. By interacting with people in a similar way to other humans, they can, in a way, empathise. I don’t think, however, that all the evolution we see in the film is something that can happen soon.” euronews: “The open letter also warns that legislative efforts are needed before ‘driverless cars’ can be come practical and ubiquitous. But could they really be dangerous?” Professor Francesca Rossi: “Let’s imagine the technology is ready and the machines are ready to drive on the road and can save the lives of many who die in car accidents caused by distractions. What is still missing is to understand how they could be regulated. The important thing is to know who is responsible for the decisions the machines take, whatever they do.” Less
