Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff has cancelled all election campaign activities for three days after the death of opposition candidate Eduardo Campos on Wednesday. Campos’s private jet crashed in bad weather as it was preparing to land in the coastal city of Santos, killing all seven people on-board. Local television images showed smoke billowing from the crash site, a residential area of Santos. A party source said Campos’s running mate, Marina Silva, was not on-board the plane. Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos has officially submitted the peace deal to end his country’s civil war to the United Nations Security Council. The accord between Bogota and the left-wing FARC guerilla group stood out as a bright spot as Syria’s turmoil continued to dominate day two of the UN General Assembly. “I return to the United Nations today, on the International Day of Peace, to announce with all the strength of my voice and my heart, that the war in Colombia has ended,” Santos said. Commended by UN chief Ban Ki Moon for his leadership and vision, Santos went on to say: “A Colombia where the resources that used to finance war will now be better geared towards education, health care and security for Colombians. A Colombia that opens its arms to the world.” The peace treaty will be formally signed later this month in the Colombian city of Cartagena. It will then be put to a nationwide referendum on October 2 before it becomes law. The deal requires the full demobilisation of FARC fighters within 180 days of its signature. The more than 50 year conflict has killed an estimated 260,000 people and displaced millions.   Less

We asked him if he thought it was fair to allow former fighters to enter parliament and take part in politics. “This is what it means to talk peace,” he said. “They will have to surrender their weapons, abandon violence, and then they can continue with politics, but by democratic means. This is the peace process. We will see if they win any seats in parliament, it may be part of the deal. The goal is for them to continue with their ideals and political struggle but without violence or weapons”. euronews: “What would be the economic impact of such a peace in Colombia?” Juan Manuel Santos: “Very significant economic and social benefits. We estimate that it could add an average 2% annual growth. We have latin America’s highest growth rate, and in the first half of this year we hit 5%. With peace we could reach 7.2% if we add the ‘peace dividend’. But above all it’s everything that concerns development in the Colombian countryside. Colombia’s President Juan Manuel Santos has received congratulations from all over the world after winning the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to end the country’s long-running conflict. Yet Colombia’s future remains uncertain after the deal he negotiated with FARC rebels was narrowly rejected by voters in last weekend’s referendum. In Bogotá people camping out in protest in favour of peace – who recently organised a silent demonstration calling for national reconciliation – have moved their rally to outside the presidential palace for 48 hours. The demonstrators welcomed the Nobel award for the president. “A Nobel prize is not the same as peace, we have not finished yet and we demand an agreement right now. That is the first thing. The second thing is we have to depersonalise this Nobel prize. This Nobel prize is because of the victims and for the victims,” one man told Euronews. The demonstrators also see the award as backing for Santos’ decision to invite all sides to continue talking to prevent the peace process from dying. “It is not just an achievement for Juan Manuel Santos, it is also an achievement for the FARC. It is good news because the Nobel prize is rewarding their effort,” said Natalia Salzar, a student. “I think it is going to have a positive reaction in Colombia, because it is a pat on the back from the international community. The support Colombia needs is very important and anything that comes our way is welcomed,” added Jorge Perez, an artist.   “I think it is a show of support from the international community to Colombia and to our deep desire to find an immediate solution to this conflict that has cost us so many lives. It is a ‘yes’ to this country,” said Carlos Fernandez, a teacher.   Some commentators have criticised the Nobel award, arguing it was inappropriate given Colombian voters’ rejection of the peace deal. Many believed it was too generous to the FARC. They included former President Álvaro Uribe – but he has joined the chorus of congratulations over the award. In a recent interview with Euronews, President Santos said he thought the greatest achievement of the peace process was the decision to put victims at the centre of all discussions. Natalia Orozco reported for Euronews from Bogotá: “The award of the Nobel Peace Prize to President Santos has filled Colombia with hope, specially those who insist the agreements must be ratified as soon as possible. A statement from Havana said negotiators would keep listening to those who voted NO, to those who opposed the agreements. A passenger in a car filmed the video with his low resolution cell phone camera and most of it is just footage of bumper to bumper traffic in the opposite direction due to an accident on that end, but then their vehicle comes to the scene of fatal accident in their lane and even though of that one there are only a few seconds of footage, the severity of head trauma makes up for it. A motorcyclist managed to crack his face wide open. His helmet is right next to him, which tells me he either didn’t wear it, or did not have it properly secured. He must have run into something at a high rate of speed face first. I think his brain is next to his motorcycle seat. Poor fucker even wore proper footwear, not flip flops for the ride.   Less

Police said he was hiding in the house of relatives after killing a woman in an attempted robbery at a supermarket in the Barrio Santos Dumont, in Pirapora (MG). He was overpowered by the 3 teenagers and brutally set upon. He was struck several times with the machete. Tens of thousands of Brazilians have turned out in the northeastern city of Recife for the funeral of presidential candidate Eduardo Campos, who was killed in a plane crash last week. Among the mourners was President Dilma Rousseff and her predecessor, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Local people queued to pay their respects before the Socialist Party candidate’s coffin and watch an open-air mass. The 49-year-old former state governor had been running third in the opinion polls. His death is expected to upset the presidential race. October’s election will see Campos replaced by the well-known environmentalist Marina Silva, who won nearly 20 percent of the votes when she first ran for president four years ago. Campaigning was stopped and three days of mourning declared for Eduardo Campos, described by the president as a “promising young politician”. He was seen as offering a third way between the ruling Workers’ Party and the opposition Social Democracy Party. Campos’ Cessna light plane came down last Wednesday in a residential area of the port city of Santos. It’s thought bad weather – high winds and rain – may have been to blame for the accident. The announcement comes one week after the previous candidate Edwardo Campos was killed in a plane crash. Silva was Campos’s vice-presidential running mate and the decision for her to replace him was widely expected. “I feel that the Brazilian Socialist Party will take forward the plans for the future that were inspired by Eduardo Campos,” said Silva after the announcement. Before his fatal plane crash, the 49-year-old former governor was a rising political star with the support of about ten percent of voters. Polls put Santos in third place behind President Dilma Rouseff and conservative candidate Aecio Neves. But polls since Campos’s death have shown Silva is neck and neck with Neves. Her growing popularity is making a second round runoff all the more likely after the October 5 election. All six challengers to the incumbent President Dilma Rousseff took part in the debate, but it’s the rivalry between Silva of the Brazilian Socialist Party (PSB) and Rousseff of the Workers’ Party (PT) which is capturing voter attention. Silva who is a former environment minister is a last minute replacement for Eduardo Campos who died in a plane crash earlier this month. Voters seem willing to give her a chance: Retiree Ana Maria said: “Who really knows, she (Silva) might be able to help the poor. But I don’t know. Once she’s inside…it’s an unknown.” “At least last night, in the debate, they showed her preparedness and objectives,” said clerk Uillis Rodrigues. “There were certianly differences between the candidates.” Current polls put Silva narrowing President Rousseff’s lead to 34% – down from 38% and pundits have now gone as far as saying Silva will beat Rousseff when it comes to the predicted runoff. Terrorism expert Jean-Charles Brisard said: “He’s a convert, we know that he has been in that area for a long time, for a year and a half, since August 2013. He learned how to use arms, he became ultra-radical and we also know that he is extremely violent. We can see it through what he posted on the social networks: he mentions the threat of terrorist attacks against France, he calls for jihad, and he often mentions Mohamed Merah’s name.” Dos Santos, who was of Portuguese origin but born in France, was a recent convert to Islam.
