Scottish police have identified more than 500 victims or potential victims of online child sex abuse. In the first national operation of its kind, 30 million images of abuse were uncovered and seventy-seven people charged. The 390 charges in all include rape, grooming, sexual extortion and indecent communication. “At least three cases we’ve seen offenders who have had over ten million images each of children on their computers and other devices,” said Detective Inspector Andy McWilliams, of Police Scotland. Police say abusers have clear tactics. “They will identify those that they think may be vulnerable for one reason or another, they will seek personal information which they will exploit, they will suggest the exchange of images and images that they send may not always be of themselves. And that may lead to a suggestion and an arrangement of a meeting where children can be abused,” explained Malcolm Graham, Assistant Chief Constable of Police Scotland. Sweden’s embassy in Ankara responded to the airport rape poster by saying it ignores the fact that Sweden has a broader definition of rape and more women report rape there than in other countries. “Every single offence is for example recorded separately and all reported events are counted as crimes even if some of them later are found not to have constituted criminal offences,” the embassy said. Austria Turkey also summoned Austria’s charge d’affaires to protest about a headline on an electronic news ticker at Vienna airport. “Turkey allows sex with children under the age of 15,” it allegedly read. Austrian officials played the matter down as one of freedom of the press. Austrian Chancellor Christian Kern has said the EU should end accession talks with Turkey. This prompted Cavusoglu to refer to Austria as the “capital of radical racism”. The tape of Tiziana Cantone, who killed herself in September, was uploaded last year without her consent. The 31-year-old made the explicit video with her new partner and then sent it to her ex-boyfriend. It later went viral after being posted on Facebook and other social media sites, prompting a tide of online abuse. While Facebook said it accepted the ruling of the Naples court, it is thought the judgement could open the door to a wave of further legal action, notably criminal proceedings against Facebook users who shared the video. The case in Italy comes as German prosecutors in Munich also investigate the social media giant’s chief Mark Zuckerberg and other senior executives for breaking hate speech laws by failing to remove racist posts.
