Using text adapted from Robert Marshalls "Alaska Wilderness: Exploring the Brooks Range" (1929) and images from Expedition Arguk (2013), "The World Beyond the World" aims to celebrate that most ancient and sublime of human pleasures: moving through a mysterious, beautiful, and unknown landscape.nnIn 2013, Expedition Arguk walked and packrafted across 300 miles of wilderness in the Alaska Arctic in order to report on Arctic issues and create public-use media from this far-off but increasingly important region. "The World Beyond the World" was shot during the first third of our trip, which took place entirely in Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve. Gates of the Arctic is the second-largest US National Park, but its extraordinary remoteness and challenging weather mean that the Park sees relatively few visitors. There are no guidebooks, trails, campgrounds, or roads. On July 11, 2012, Gary W. Gallagher delivered a Banner Lecture entitled "More Important Than Gettysburg: The Seven Days Campaign as a Turning Point." Ever since the Civil War ended, it has been a popular pastime to look for dramatic turning points in that conflict. For many, the battle of Gettysburg represents the great event that tipped the balance toward the North. Key political, diplomatic, social, and military issues, however, were at stake in the summer of 1862 as Robert E. Lee and George B. McClellan faced off in the Seven Days Battles. Gary W. Gallagher argues that Lee's victory had a profound effect on the conflict and that perhaps the series of battles waged on the Virginia Peninsula should be regarded as a major turning point of the war. Dr. Gallagher is a professor of history at the University of Virginia. His most recent book is "The Union War." April 18, 2014nnAnthology partners with our pals at Issue Project Room to present an eclectic/electric evening with Jason Lescalleet, one of America's most dedicated modern sound artists. His work explores a sonic world that hovers between noise, contemporary composition, and minimal electronics. He blends layers of found sound, amplified silences, and artifacts of everyday noise, all transformed through various microphones, tape recorders, and speakers. Based in Maine, Lescalleet has also built a solid reputation for delivering a visceral live experience in his concert performances. Over the past couple of decades, Lescalleet has gradually and painstakingly compiled a compelling discography on notable labels such as Kye, RRR, Erstwhile, Chondritic Sound, NNA, and most recently via his own Glistening Examples imprint. Never one to sit still for long, he has spent the last two years generating a slew of solo and collaborative albums with the likes of Aaron Dilloway, Graham Lambkin, and Kevin Drumm. Chief amongst these releases is the remarkable 2012 double CD on Erstwhile Records, SONGS ABOUT NOTHING. Over the following year Lescalleet commissioned 13 different artists to create videos for the 13 tracks on the first disc in that set, TROPHY TAPE. “Hard Time” is a 40 minute documentary about the personal evolution of a man, from a life of poverty in rural Louisiana, through the state corrections system, to becoming a political activist who has devoted his life to the plight of political prisoners in the United States. In 1970, a jury convicted Robert King of a crime he did not commit and he was sentenced him to 35 years in prison. He became a member of the Black Panther Party while in Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola, successfully organizing prisoners to improve conditions. In return, prison authorities beat him, starved him, and gave him life without parole after framing him for a second crime. He was thrown into solitary confinement, where he remained in a six by nine foot cell for 29 years as one of the Angola 3. In 2001, after years of legal battles, he was set free. King’s story is one that makes people everywhere think about what how the justice system works and what happens to men and women who are incarcerated. King’s is a story of inspiration and courage, and the triumph of the human spirit. “Hard Time” is his story told in his own words.   Less

RAEN is the first creation from Carlo & Dante Mondavi. The Mondavi legacy has spread outward from Napa Valley for more than a century. Carlo and Dante strive to explore and to find their own path in the creation of their own wine while testing the rules and boundaries of their childhood. These contrasting worlds and trials lead to their first 2013 RAEN creation. SOLO EXHIBITION “METROS” OPENED SATURDAY OCTOBER 11th 2014nJames McNabb is a Philadelphia based artist working primarily in wood. His creations of cityscapeninspired sculptures explore sociological concepts regarding transformations of cities and urbannlandscapes, their beauty, uniqueness, and overdevelopment. In his sculptures, McNabb uses scrapnpieces of wood,, some with very unique and alluring characteristics, that are contextualized tondraw new meaning out of the material and force the viewer to create his or her own perspective ofnthe urban landscape. McNabb blends traditional woodworking technique with experimental marknmaking using a bandsaw. This intuitive process, referred to as “sketching with a bandsaw” allowsnthe artist to generate forms rapidly, working through new and exciting ideas without preliminaryndesign development. This approach to woodworking is an attempt to capture the fast paced, crudenmark-making that is commonly found in contemporary urban art.
