See more architecture and design movies at dezeen.com/moviesnnThe colour temperature of this series of lamps by Rotterdam designer Arnout Meijer can be adjusted to create different moods throughout the day.nnMeijer developed the Thanks for the Sun series in response to the need for light that fulfils different roles - providing bright white light for working and aiding concentration, and a warmer, more soothing hue to help people relax before bed.nn"When you think about a lamp design, you design everything but the light: you design the shade, construction, base, etc but in the end you just screw the light in," Meijer told Dezeen. "I wanted to turn that around and let light play the main character. So I wanted to make a lamp series where the design and the shape was about the light."nnEach of the acrylic lamps incorporates an inner and outer strip of LEDs that can be adjusted using a dial or slider to change the colour of the light from a bright white to a warmer red or yellow.nnLight from the LEDs spreads across the surface and catches lines that have been milled into the transparent acrylic.nnThe patterns feature wavy lines that transition into smooth shapes as they radiate from the inner form to the outer edge.nn"When I decided that I wanted to change between warm and cool light I thought it was important that when the character of the light changes, the character of the lamp changes as well," explained Meijer.nn"When you see a drawing of a light bulb from the end of the nineteenth century there is always a sort of wave-like pattern, which mimics glowing," the designer added. "Whereas cool white light is more modern and straight, like the hard line of a fluorescent tube."nnThe collection comprises a narrow table lamp, a round table table and a larger wall lampnnMeijer originally designed the lamps during his studies at Design Academy Eindhoven and is now using them as the basis for experiments on a larger scale, which he says will eventually result in a series of limited edition light sculptures. As documented elsewhere, the ice storm also brought much beauty, with a blue blanket of transparent ice not seen since Schwarzenegger in BATMAN AND ROBIN.nnLoving the surreal lighting effect of the ice on the trees, I experimented with utilizing / enhancing this in the second half of the video with a cocktail of Light Rays/Zooms/Rotations/Saturation -- creating the kaleidoscopic "ICELIGHTING" effect you see. (Try to watch in HD with headphones on and volume cranked if you can, for maximum immersion!)nnYIKÁÍSDÁHÁ (Navajo for Milky Way or "That Which Awaits the Dawn"nnIn April I had the privilege of being invited to Northern Arizona University as an "artist in residence" to speak with their Photography students about my timelapse experiences. While there, we also took shooting field trips to some of the magnificent locations a few hours away, most notably Grand Canyon National Park and Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park (spotted in many epic John Ford Westerns and countless other classics like EASY RIDER and BACK TO THE FUTURE III http://bit.ly/1lngv3x!) The weather was very intense at times, with high winds, frigid temperatures, and stormfronts passing over us, but the locations were absolutely stunning and the clouds parted for long enough to reveal some incredible starscapes, meteors, and the clearest Milky Way I've ever seen!nnThis was also my first opportunity to collaborate with old friend and former American Film Institute classmate Harun Mehmedinović (www.bloodhoney.com), an incredibly accomplished photographer and now one of the professors at NAU. His passion and artists' eye really elevated the quality of the material in a big way. Because the nights we picked had almost zero moon, the stars and Milky Way were exceptionally clear (once the storm clouds parted), which also made a perfect galactic palette for some star trails experiments, including a new mirroring/distortion effect at 2:56 that revealed a cool native pattern. For those not familiar with past vids, the star trails effect is created by tracing the rotation of the Earth's axis, using a long exposure timelapse pictures and an awesome rendering program called STARSTAX.nnKeep an eye out at 2:10 (top center) as a meteor seems to BURST through the atmosphere and leave a smoke trail in its wake. Maybe you scientists or astronomers out there can help explain in better language :) Also, for those who were asking, the crazy burnt out forest seen in the Milky Way shots is all in Grand Canyon National Park, a much more diverse location than I imagined!nnShot and Produced by: Gavin Heffernan and Harun MehmedinovićnMusic: A Seated Night (Ambient) by Moby. See more architecture and design movies at dezeen.com/moviesnnIsraeli designers Omer Polak and Michal Evyatar have blown coloured dough into set of edible balloons filled with different odours.nnOmer Polak and Michal Evyatar used an industrial blower traditionally used for glass blowing to shape and bake the Blow Dough simultaneously.nnCollaborating with chef Erez Komorovsky, the duo added combinations of herbs during the blowing process to scent the air inside the bubbles.nn"By taking a bite into the balloon the odours spread out directly through the mouth and the nose," said the designers. "Thus, the entire eating experience is enriched."nnThe dough was made by simply mixing flour, water and seasoning, then kneading the ingredients together to create a stodgy material.nnTo create the bright colours, the water has been substituted for fresh juice from vegetable including beetroot, carrots and spinach.nnThe dough was stretched over a hole in a bench, positioned over the blower. A circular metal template was placed over the top to make material inflate as spherically as possible.nnPolak and Evyatar spent a lot of time finding the right consistency of the dough so it would expand into a thin layer without bursting.nn"The process included many experiments in the workshops kitchen," said the designers. "It was a great challenge to succeed in creating dough that is very flexible and can also come thin for baking and the eating experience.nnThey also had to experiment with the size of the dough balls, amount of blowing time and heat of the oven to form the best balloons.nn"We worked almost like scientists, we wrote time, quantities and temperature that we could produce the exact dough," said the duo.nnBlow Dough was created for last year's Jerusalem Design Week, as a part of the Food Lab event curated by designer Ayala Moses.nnVisitors to the exhibition were able to create and inflate their own dough balloons, choosing their own herbs and seasoning before tasting them.nn"The project illustrates the food manufacturing process in a small-scale factory that was established for one day as an analogy to the street food carts and to the urban eating experience in Jerusalem," the designers said.nnOther designers experimenting with food include Central Saint Martins graduate Robert Cooper, who created Airfix-style chocolate and wafer snacks, and Icelandic product design graduate Búi Bjarmar Aðalsteinsson who developed a Fly Factory that breeds insect larvae for human consumption.
