It is normal to regularly see cars covered in dust. What may seem abnormal is that this “dust” is likely to be a fine layer of sand from the Sahara Desert, hundreds of kilometres away.Sand particles in the Sahara are disturbed by strong winds and drawn up into the atmosphere. These enormous plumes of dust are then carried off by the winds – often covering large areas of Southern Europe. This almost invisible enemy can cause serious health problems, such as respiratory diseases, but it can also cause problems with solar energy production: an increasingly important clean and renewable alternative to oil.Desert dust reduces the amount of radiation reaching the solar mirrors which transform sunlight into energy.The European Monitoring Atmospheric Composition and Climate project (MACC-II) keeps power station managers informed of the frequency at which a certain location is affected by these large dust clouds. In the near future it is expected to provide daily updates and five-day forecasts to show the dust’s impact on solar radiation. Florent Cassar, Project Head in the Solar Energy Division at Constructions Industrielles de la Mediterranée (CNIM), explained the importance of such forecasts.“What we see on the mirrors are dust and aerosols from the desert. Those are harmful to our facilities because they reduce the incoming solar energy impacting on our system,” he said. “If we know a few days in advance that a dust storm is coming, we will store surplus energy so that it can be used on the days where there isn’t sufficient solar energy to operate the installation. At the moment, this storage works with pressurised water; so there are kinds of big cans that will store water at a very high pressure and a very high temperature. Food blogger Tarika Singh brings you a taste worth obsessing for. The recipe is called Salted Caramel Frozen Yogurt which has frozen yogurt with a silky-smooth swirl of salted caramel blended throughout. This indulgent recipe is a perfect combination of sweet and salty that delivers a one of a kind taste experience. Ingredients: For the salted caramel sauce: 1 cup granulated sugar 6 tbsp. water 4 tbsp. chilled, unsalted butter 2/3 cup cream (25% fat) 1/2 tsp. sea salt For the yogurt: 800 grams yogurt Method: To make the salted caramel sauce: - In a vessel, add 1 cup of sugar along with 6 tbsp. of water and heat it on a medium high flame for a couple of minutes until it gets a deep amber colour. - Take the vessel off the heat and add chilled butter, cream and salt to it and keep whisking till it gets combined completely and gets a smooth texture. - Pour the hot caramel into a glass jar and let it cool at room temperature. To make the frozen yogurt: - Take a bowl and place a mesh strainer over it and line it with a muslin cloth. - Pour about 800 gms of whole yogurt over the muslin cloth. - Let the whey drain out of the yogurt for atleast 12 hours and place it in the refrigerator while it's draining. - At the 4-hour mark, take the yogurt out of the refrigerator and gently squeeze out the whey by gathering the edges of the muslin cloth. - Put the yogurt back into the refrigerator to drain for the next 8 hours. - Post 8 hours, take the yogurt out of the refrigerator and give it a final nudge to drain out any leftover whey. - Put the strained yogurt into a bowl and pour a generous amount of caramel over it. - Start whisking the yogurt and the salted caramel sauce together till there are no lumps left and you get a smooth texture to the frozen yogurt. - Pour the yogurt into a loaf pan and spread it evenly. - Wrap the yogurt tightly with a cling film and place it in the freezer for 4 hours. - Your delicious frozen yogurt is ready to be served with drizzle... In fact, there are so many unexplored species that it is hard to even estimate how much we still do not know about them.Algae and sponges carry microorganisms that protect them from environmental threats. Johannes Imhoff, a marine microbiologist at the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, said: “Up to 40% of a sponges’ biomass is bacteria and fungi, representing a large bio-diversity of microorganisms which we can isolate in the lab to produce bioactive compounds.”To turn them into medicine in the lab, researchers culture a fungus from the sample. The fungus naturally produces biochemical compound that could kill other cells – such as cancer.Antje Labes, a marine biotechnologist working on the project, explained: “We have to recreate the right conditions in the lab for these microorganisms to produce the compounds we need. They need the right temperature, Ph values, nutrients and biological environment.”Spectrometry focuses on compounds that have not been studied yet. If they have bioactive properties, they could be used in medicine.Jan Oesterwalbesloh, a pharmacist with the project, said: “Fungi can be very beneficial for health. Penicillin is perhaps the best known example, but there also are some strains of marine fungi which are active against cancer cell lines.”To test for bioactive properties, isolated compounds are mixed with live cancer cells and an indicator liquid changes its colour from blue to pink if the tumour cells die. Quantum mechanics provides a substantially useful framework for many features of the modern periodic table of elements including the behavior of atoms during chemical bonding and has played a significant role in the development of many modern technologies. In advanced topics of quantum mechanics, some of these behaviors are macroscopic (see macroscopic quantum phenomena) and emerge at only extreme (i.e., very low or very high) energies or temperatures (such as in the use of superconducting magnets). In the context of quantum mechanics, the wave–particle duality of energy and matter and the uncertainty principle provide a unified view of the behavior of photons, electrons, and other atomic-scale objects. The mathematical formulations of quantum mechanics are abstract. A mathematical function, the wavefunction, provides information about the probability amplitude of position, momentum, and other physical properties of a particle. Ingredients: 125 grams unsalted butter at room temperature 125 grams caster sugar 125 grams all-purpose flour 1 tsp baking powder 2 large eggs 1 tsp vanilla extract 2 to 3 Tablespoons milk (only if required) For the icing 30 grams unsalted butter, slightly cold, not fully at room temperature 70 grams cream cheese, cold kept out of the refrigerator for only a minute 150 grams icing sugar, sifted 75 grams peanut chikki Few extra pieces of chikki, crushed to sprinkle on top Method: - Pre-heat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius. - In a medium-sized bowl, sift together the flour and baking powder. Set aside. - In a large bowl, use an electric hand-held mixer or large whisk to beat together the butter and caster sugar until pale and fluffy. - In a small bowl, whisk together the eggs with vanilla extract. Gradually add this whisked mixture to butter-sugar mix, beating well after each addition until it has been incorporated. - Add the flour in 2 batches to the wet ingredients, mixing well after each addition. Ingredients: 225 grams dark chocolate (45% dark) 80 grams butter (room temperature) 3 egg yolks 3 egg whites 1 tbsp cocoa powder 50 grams caster sugar (used in 2 bathes) 200 ml whipped cream Pinch of salt for egg whites Method: - Cut the dark chocolate into small pieces. - Measure the chocolate and then add the butter to it. - Heat little water in a pan. - While the water is heating up, add half of the caster sugar to the egg yolks kept in a bowl and whisk well. - Once the water is hot, hold the bowl of chocolate pieces aver the heated water. Make sure that the bottom of the chocolate bowl does not touch the hot water at any point. - Once the chocolate melts completely, set it aside. - Add the coco powder to the egg yolk that you whisked earlier and then whisk the ingredients again. - Hold this bowl over the double boiler and constantly keep whisking the mixture. - Once it thickens, take it off the heat and keep whisking continuously. - While you are whisking, start adding the melted chocolate to it and continue whisking. - Once the egg yolk and melted chocolate mix completely, set them aside for a couple of minutes. - Start whipping the chilled cream. February 11, 2015 marks five years in space for NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, which provides incredibly detailed images of the whole sun 24 hours a day. Capturing an image more than once per second, SDO has provided an unprecedentedly clear picture of how massive explosions on the sun grow and erupt ever since its launch on Feb. 11, 2010. The imagery is also captivating, allowing one to watch the constant ballet of solar material through the sun's atmosphere, the corona. In honor of SDO's fifth anniversary, NASA has released a video showcasing highlights from the last five years of sun watching. Watch the movie to see giant clouds of solar material hurled out into space, the dance of giant loops hovering in the corona, and huge sunspots growing and shrinking on the sun's surface. The imagery is an example of the kind of data that SDO provides to scientists. By watching the sun in different wavelengths – and therefore different temperatures – scientists can watch how material courses through the corona, which holds clues to what causes eruptions on the sun, what heats the sun's atmosphere up to 1,000 times hotter than its surface, and why the sun's magnetic fields are constantly on the move. Five years into its mission, SDO continues to send back tantalizing imagery to incite scientists' curiosity. For example, in late 2014, SDO captured imagery of the largest sun spots seen since 1995 as well as a torrent of intense solar flares. Solar flares are bursts of light, energy and X-rays. They can occur by themselves or can be accompanied by what's called a coronal mass ejection, or CME, in which a giant cloud of solar material erupts off the sun, achieves escape velocity and heads off into space. In this case, the sun produced only flares and no CMEs, which, while not unheard of, is somewhat unusual for flares of that size. This footage takes place within approximately 30 seconds of real time. The initial flames are the result of kerosene and liquid oxygen being released from the Saturn V rocket's fuel tanks and being ignited by hypergolic cartridges, which spin up the turbines and drive fuel to the F-1 engines. After reaching full thrust, the downward force of the exhaust creates a low pressure area which pulls the billowing gas below the vehicle and into the flame trench. To the right of the vehicle are two tail service masts (a third is on the opposite side of the rocket), and equidistant around the rocket are four hold-down arms. At T-0, the hold down arms release the rocket, and the tail service masts begin to swing up into protective hoods. During the launch, ice that had formed around the rocket (due to the extremely cold liquid oxygen inside) can be seen falling off. The dark material seen leaving the engines during liftoff is cooler exhaust gas from the turbines being ejected through the engine nozzle, the idea being that the cooler gas would act as an insulator for the nozzle against the extreme temperatures of the ignited fuel. Surfaces and equipment on the Launch Umbilical Tower and Mobile Launcher were painted with an ablative material which would burn off under the heat of the launch and protect the underlying surfaces. Throughout the latter part of the video, this ablative material can be seen charring and burning. During launch, the pad's Water Deluge System discharged some 300,000 gallons of water onto the surfaces of the Mobile Launcher and Launch Umbilical Tower, and into the flame trench, to both cool the pad and dampen the acoustic shock waves produced by the engine exhaust.
