Is the war on Syria imminent even without legal approval from the UN? United States and its allies are looking beyond the divided UN to justify the military action. Will the US look to NATO like it did with Kosovo and will it use the RtoP (right to protect the doctrine for legitimacy of its campaign)? Those questions and lot more on this edition of The Debate. Until now, there has not been a military strike on Syria, even though some high-ranking US officials stated Thursday to be D-day. In this edition of The Debate we'll discuss the possibilities of a military strike, the strategic positioning of US and its allied forces and whether countries involved will illegally wage this war without UN approval based on the false allegations of Syrian use of chemical weapons and the RtoP doctrine. OP: One of the most stunning moments in Yosemite National Park. The “firefall,” is a completely natural effect that occurs when the angle of the sun sets and illuminates the waterfall. A mass rally was held in Rome on Saturday in defence of the traditional family, as Italy debates whether to grant legal recognition and limited adoption rights to same-sex couples. Reports varied as to how many gathered in the capital’s Circus Maximus, Ancient Rome’s famed chariot racing stadium. Estimates varied from tens of thousands to the one million figure put forward by organisers. Italy is the last major country in Western Europe not to have offered rights or recognition to same- sex couples. Those taking part in the giant gathering want things to stay that way. “I think the kids’ rights should come first, before the rights of adults who are free to do whatever they want,” one young woman said. “It is a fact. Nature dictates that a baby comes from a man and a woman.” Showing how polarised the nation is, Saturday’s rally came a week after thousands of people took to the streets of Italy to demand that the “civil union” bill, which relates to both homosexual and heterosexual couples, be approved. The bill under discussion was presented to parliament last week and is due to be voted on next month. As well as opposition on the streets, the government itself is deeply divided over the issue and opponents in the heavily Roman Catholic country hope they can sink it, as they have done in the past. A week ago Pope Francis issued a strong reminder of the church’s opposition to gay marriage, saying that the traditional family was “the family God wants”. Some protesters echoed his view. “I am a grandfather and this law goes against God and goes against the Bible,” said Franco Pantuso, 71, a retired waiter from the central city of L’Aquila who had came to Rome especially. “Our children and grandchildren must be protected.” Latest opinion polls say that 70 percent of Italians believe that same-sex couples should be granted legal protection, such as inheritance rights. However, only some 24 percent think that any adoption rights should be granted to gay couples. Less

Britain’s Prime Minister David Cameron made an impassioned call for voters to choose to stay in the EU when campaigning resumed on Sunday. In a televised question and answer programme he said Britain isn’t a quitter, Britain is a fighter. “If we choose to leave, we can leave but let’s be clear if we do leave we are walking out the door, we are quitting, we are giving up on this organisation which even if we leave will have a huge effect on our lives, our children, on our opportunities, on our businesses. I don’t think Britain at the end is a quitter. I think we stay and fight. That is what we should do. That is what made our country great and that’s how it will be great in the future.’ Following a three day suspension prompted by the killing of a pro-EU MP, representatives of both sides of the argument are once again fighting to get their message across. “completely untrue” Cameron also urged people not to vote in the EU referendum on the basis of what he said were “completely untrue” claims from the Leave campaign. He dismissed warnings over an EU army, the prospects of Turkey joining and the cost of the UK’s membership. BRITAIN DOESN’T QUIT – the clear message from David Cameron in tonight’s debate. #StrongerInhttps://t.co/yjI7DceYDZ— Stronger In (@StrongerIn) June 19, 2016 “Believe in ourselves” Heading the “Leave” camp, former London mayor Boris Johnson made his own rallying call urging people to “take back control of this great country’s destiny” and to “believe in ourselves and in what Britain can do”. With four days to go it seems there will be no let up in the heated nature of the debate which has so far seen “In” campaigners accused of scaremongering on the economy and the “Out” campaign’s immigration focus criticised as divisive. Opinion polls suggest Thursday’s vote will be close although it appears there has been a slight swing back to the status quo. The only poll fully carried out since the death of the lawmaker has showed the “Remain” camp regaining some momentum with a three percent lead. Less

As the US and its allies are busy beating the drums of war on Syria over a chemical attack allegedly launched by Damascus, al-Qaeda linked groups are intensifying their campaign against christian as well as Muslim areas. Observers say contrary to what US claims, al-Qaeda has an extensive presence in Syria posing a serious threat to the civilian population. Syria says any military action will be in the interest of al-Qaeda groups and would eventually turn Syria into another base for terrorists. So will the US attack anyway? Less
