Kauai is well on its way to harnessing half its energy needs from natural resources in the next five years. It’s an ambitious goal for Kauai Island Utility Cooperative (KIUC), as its initial target was 2023. Plus there are numerous privately owned systems of wind, solar hydroelectric installed by residents and business that will inflate the projected estimates below. The first large-scale solar project (6 megawatts) was built next to KIUC’s Port Allen plant and has been in operation about two years. It is a joint project with Alexander & Baldwin, which owns the land and receives tax incentives for supplying power to the co-op. Since then, a photovoltaic system twice as big (12 MW) was developed by KIUC on land leased from Grove Farm Company in Koloa. And the next 12-MW project, on state land (Department of Hawaiian Home Lands), currently is underway in Anahola and is expected to be online next year. These three solar resources alone are expected to provide more than half the island’s daytime energy needs. The co-op has been introducing a number of other projects that should bring the island’s overall consumption to almost 40 percent renewable energy within the next year. Aside from a handful of smaller-scale solar projects already furnishing power, such as the 1-MW photovoltaic system in Kapaa, KIUC has a purchase power agreement (a contract to buy electricity from the entity generating it) with independent developer Green Energy Team to grow woody albizia to be burned for energy in Knudsen Gap by 2015. It would supply some 7 MW of power that, unlike solar, would be usable 24 hours a day. Another addition to the renewable resource supply that may boost the natural energy percentage even higher at 25 MW would be a proposed pumped storage hydro plant that recently received preliminary approval by the state Board of Land and Natural Resources. The system would use photovoltaic power to pump water from an already existing reservoir on the Westside to an existing reservoir higher upland during the day. At night, the water would be released to the lower site to harness nighttime energy needs. This kind of operation has been used effectively and efficiently since the 1800s. U.S. President Barack Obama on Friday rejected the disputed Keystone XL pipeline project with Canada. The rejection has given the U.S. a leverage when it joins the year-end climate summit in Paris. The 1,897-kilometer pipeline project has been under review for more than seven years. It was expected to bring more than 800,000 barrels of Canadian crude to U.S. refineries daily. Yet environmentalist groups worried the 8-billion-U.S.-dollar project could increase oil sands exploitation with higher greenhouse gas emissions. Less

Alvin Holmes is further proof that the Democrat Party is still America's oldest hate group. The new way of getting away with hatred is projecting it onto others. The Democrats used to get away with destroying Blacks and Republicans with hoods and sheets. Now Democrats get away with destroying Republicans by accusing them for the evils they themselves have actually done; and they get away with destroying Blacks by patronizing them, and by distracting them by making them prejudice against Republicans. Turkey’s new president Recep Tayyip Erdogan has made his first official overseas trip since being elected. In keeping with tradition, his visit was to the breakaway northern part of Cyprus where he met the Turkish Cypriot leader ahead of a joint news conference. Reunification of the divided island is an important topic for Erdogan, Turkey’s first directly elected president. He said he will continue to present the issue on international platforms. “The NATO summit and UN General Assembly take place soon,” said Erdogan. “The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) has always topped our agenda.” Erdogan outlined his plans to start what he described as one of his biggest projects, “to supply water from Turkey under the Mediterranean Sea.” “This will deepen our brotherhood and ties,” he added. Cyprus has been divided since Turkey invaded the north of the island in response to a Greek-backed military coup in 1974. Since then several reunification attempts have been unsuccessful. Talks resumed in February 2012 but proposals were eventually rejected by some political parties in southern Cyprus. Only the Greek Cypriot government in the south of the island is internationally recognised. Less

The Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced during a visit to Turkey that Moscow is dropping the proposed South Stream gas pipeline project because of opposition from the European Union. Alongside his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Putin cited the EU Commission’s reluctance to give the go-ahead to plans to supply southern Europe with gas via Bulgaria. “Europe will not get those gas volumes, at least from Russia. We consider that it doesn’t suit Europe’s economic interests and that it damages our cooperation. But that’s Our European friends’ choice. They are consumers after all,” the Russian president said. Moscow had previously accused Brussels of seeking to halt South Stream, funded by Russian state giant Gazprom, because of political differences over Ukraine. Turkey’s president sought assurances from Putin over the Muslim Tatar population in Crimea, annexed by Russia, with whom Turkey has strong links. “We discussed (the situation of) the Tatars in Crimea in great detail. About this issue, Putin has said that his approach is positive and he is offering and willing to offer maximum rights to Crimean Tatars that they never had before,” Recep Tayyip Erdogan said. Putin said that Russia, Turkey’s main energy supplier, would reduce the price of gas to the country by six percent, starting from next year. The two nations signed a series of other commercial deals, showing a willingness to develop economic ties still further despite profound disagreements in foreign policy over Syria and Ukraine. Less

It is a pet project that comes with a cool price tag of nearly eight billion euros. A second Suez Canal has been a top priority for Egyptian president Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. He came to power after ousting the former head of state, Mohammed Morsi. Egypt’s new strongman pledges that he will revive the Egyptian economy and see this project as a key part of that. The second Suez canal stretches seventy two kilometres alongside the existing waterway. It was completed in just one year. The Suez Canal opened in 1869, with Britain buying a controlling stake in it six years later to secure a safe trade route to India. President Gamal Abdel Nasser nationalised Suez in 1956, which was controlled by both Britain and France at the time. The move was popular in Egypt and across the Arab world. It prompted the so-called Suez canal crisis when Britain, France and Israel launched a joint attack on the area in September of that year. But US pressure led Britain to call off the operation on November the 7th. It marked a humiliating end of influence in the region for both the British and the French. According to the Suez Canal Authority, the new waterway will lead to a near two-fold increase in traffic, as well as a tripling of revenue. But economists say those projections are highly speculative. The existing canal is running below maximum capacity. Transport volumes are down this year owing to China’s economic downturn and reduced Western demand for oil from the Persian Gulf. Less

One of the world’s largest water pipelines went on stream on Saturday, with the Turkish president turning the taps on the 80 kilometre-long project, that lies 250 metres below the Mediterranean. It supplies the Turkish Cypriots of northern Cyprus with water from Turkey’s Alakopru Dam, and has cost nearly 380 million euros. Cyprus lacks water resources of its own. Less

The destruction wrought on the Syrian city of Aleppo appears complete. Video images show destroyed building after destroyed building. How could anything rise again from the fires of war? But a group of architects – some Syrian – along with other experts are begining to think the unthinkable. What’s been named The Aleppo Project is based at the Central European University in Budapest. As Alhakam Shaar explained he and his colleagues are asking via the web how should the city be rebuilt?. “The purpose is to engage now with Aleppians so they should be the focus of our work, those are the ones whose opinions matter and need to get there so we hope to incorporate these.” It’s hard to believe that anyone should want to return but according to a German survey most Syrian refugees would like to go back to their homeland one day. And its that thinking about the future which The Aleppo Project is all about. Less

The COP21 climate summit is now fully underway: the delegations from 195 countries represented here are meeting face to face, they’re taking decisions: who is responsible for what, who is gonna pay for what. At the back of their minds, they know that they need to come out of this summit with a deal they can sell back home. And that means making something which is also good for their economies as well as for the climate. On the sidelines of the summit, French President Francois Hollande met leaders from countries including Chad, Niger and Egypt. Hollande said that in the coming years France would invest billions of euros in African renewable energy projects. “A very substantial part of our effort will benefit Africa, particularly the electrification of the continent without waiting for 2020,” said Hollande. “Today I can announce that France will dedicate 6 billion euros to the project between 2016 and 2020.” Hollande said developed countries have a responsibility after emitting greenhouses gases for decades. He said that’s left many African nations struggling with droughts, flooding and migration. Less
