The sister of the Spanish king could in theory face a public trial after tax fraud charges against her were upheld by Mallorca’s high court. Money laundering charges Princess Cristina was also facing were dropped. This means there is a chance she could avoid a trial, a fact which has angered many Spanish people. The law in Spain gives judges discretionary powers to drop tax fraud charges if they are brought by a private plaintiff – in this case an anti-corruption group – and not a public prosecutor. Her lawyer, Miquel Roca, says the case should be scrapped. “There are enough legal precedents, and legal rulings in the past to establish that it wouldn’t be legitimate to take this case any further,” he said. The court’s decision is the latest turn in a long-running scandal. The Princess was charged along with 16 others, including her husband Inaki Urdangarin, a former Olympic medal-winning handball player, with embezzling public funds of around six million euros. King Felipe VI has distanced himself from his sister and Cristina was absent from his coronation earlier this year. The president of the jury, Victor Garcia de la Concha explained the decision. “Lledo conceives philosophy as meditation on language and emphasizes the natural tendency of human beings to communicate. In this way he promotes a dialogue for coexistence in freedom and democracy,” he said. The winner is a man of letters who first graduated in Philosophy in 1952 from the University of Madrid. He studied in Heidelberg in Germany for his doctorate and was Professor of Philosophy at the University of Barcelona for 11 years and subsequently at the National University of Distance Learning until his retirement. He is also an author of several acclaimed books including Philosophy and Language for he believes that there is no freedom without language. He has written on ethics while another work is called “In Praise of Unhappiness”. Announcing the award, president of the jury, Pedro Miguel Echenique, praised their work as ground-breaking. “Both researchers studied how bacteria defend against certain viruses that infect them, destroying their DNA by recognising some of its specific features,” he said. “This methodology allows them to remove, activate, inactivate, or even correct genes and could be used in various applications for basic research and as well in agriculture, livestock and biomedicine.” Gene-editing technology known as CRISPR-Cas9 is potentially worth billions of euros. Since Doudna and Charpentier published a paper in the journal Science in 2012 describing the technique, scientists worldwide have used the method to experiment on plant, animal and human cells, and to test potential cures for sickle-cell anemia and cancer.   Less

The encyclopedia of the internet was created in 2001. People of all ages, cultures and backgrounds can add or edit articles, references, images and other media. What remains on the site will depend on a number of factors, not least if it fits with the company’s policies including being verifiable against a published reliable source. The content is watched by a number of experienced editors. Unlike the paper-based encyclopedias it is a live collaboration and is continually created and updated with articles on historic events appearing within minutes rather than months or years. It’s success can be measured in numbers: The English version has grown to 4,893,126 articles and that’s equivalent to over 2,000 print volumes of Encyclopedia Britannica. The prize for Social Sciences went to French economist and Professor of Poverty Alleviation and Development Economics at MIT, a field which she has pioneered, Esther Duflo. The venerable Hospitaller Order of St. John, founded in 1593, won the Concord award, and the Cuban-born writer Leonardo Padura won the Literature prize. The arts prize went to film director Francis Ford Coppola, who also gave one of the evening’s keynote speeches. “This is the real thrill of the human species, that each generation children can run faster, leap higher, play musical instruments with uncanny technical excellence and dream bigger, newer, cinematic expressions than we can’t even guess at,” he said to generous applause. Only the winners of the Sports prize, the Gasol brothers, were not able to attend as they are currently involved in the NBA. It is the second time they have won, as the basketball stars were part of the Spanish team that won as a group in 2006. It was also the second win for the Technical and Scientific Research duo of Emmanuel Charpentier and Jennifer Doudna, for their revolutionary biotechnology work.
