On Saturday (Sep. 27, 2014) the Phoenix and surrounding areas saw the third of heavy storms this season. Two of the three storms broke all time rainfall records for the Phoenix area, producing enough rain to total more than some years total rainfall within a couple hours time. With this latest storm over 71,000 residents were without power for 10+ hours (including me) with some 1,800 still without power two days later. Much of the power outages were caused when heavy steel poles carrying high power lines were bent at their bases down to ground level. This storm brought heavy winds (60-75 mph) and up to 2 inches of rain, while the two previous storms earlier this month brought over 5 inches (per storm) in many valley locations. #financial_support_div{ display:none; position: absolute; width:300px; height:180px; margin-left: -150px; margin-top: -70px; /*- half of width and height */ top:50%; left:50%; padding: 5px; opacity:0.9; filter:alpha(opacity=90); z-index:1000; background-color:#000; color: white; } .close_box{ background: gray; color:#fff; padding:1px 3px; display:inline; position:absolute; right:1px; margin-right: -13px; margin-top: -13px; border-radius:3px; cursor:pointer; border: 1px #000 solid; } $(document).on("click",".close_box",function(){ $(this).parent().fadeTo(300,0,function(){ $(this).remove(); }); }); Loading the player ... Protesters unfurled an anti-Donald Trump banner interrupting the Republican presidential candidate's speech at the Phoenix Convention Centre, Saturday. The US Apprentice star had organised the rally to try and drum up support for his upcoming run for presidency. Around 3,500 people attended, having to make their way past protesters who had set up camp outside the venue to condemn Trump's policies and behaviours. Holy miracle! Watch Virgin Mary's lips 'MOVE' on painting during prayer Stunned believers are flocking to the church to witness the unusual sight that has left even sceptics scratching their heads Hundreds of Christians are flocking to church to witness a 'miracle' painting of the Virgin Mary who appears to join in with the Lord's prayer. Stunned believers filmed the astonishing moment her lips appeared to move on the artwork during Mass last Sunday. Footage shows the congregation saying the 'Our Father' prayer but after several seconds it's clear several Christians are distracted by something else. If you look closely, the Virgin Mary's mouth appears to move during the biblical reading, becoming clearer towards the end of the video. Baffled George Akary filmed what he believes is a 'miracle' in St Charbel's church, Sydney, before posting it on Facebook. #financial_support_div{ display:none; position: absolute; width:300px; height:180px; margin-left: -150px; margin-top: -70px; /*- half of width and height */ top:50%; left:50%; padding: 5px; opacity:0.9; filter:alpha(opacity=90); z-index:1000; background-color:#000; color: white; } .close_box{ background: gray; color:#fff; padding:1px 3px; display:inline; position:absolute; right:1px; margin-right: -13px; margin-top: -13px; border-radius:3px; cursor:pointer; border: 1px #000 solid; } $(document).on("click",".close_box",function(){ $(this).parent().fadeTo(300,0,function(){ $(this).remove(); }); }); Loading the player ... Every year, the spectacular Fete des Lumieres (Festival of Lights) takes place in the French city of Lyon. The authorities say they get three to four million people riding the public transportation system over several days and nights. This year the festival is from 5th-8th December, with more than 70 installations. The focal points are the Fourviere Basilica and the Place des Terreaux. The festival has its origins in 1643. Plague was roaming the country, and the story goes that when Lyon dedicated itself to the Virgin Mary the sickness left it. But it was not until 1852 that the townspeople began lining their windows with candles on the night of December 8th, to say ‘Merci Marie’. In 1999 the city decided to develop the festival. Streets are closed off, the downtown core becomes a pedestrians-only area, packed with crowds. It can get hard to move but the foot traffic is closely managed. In some places, barriers and security wardens move festival-goers along one-way systems. Hot mulled wine and hot chocolate with chartreuse liqueur are among the drinks sold from street stalls. Mini-candles (what a contrast to the mechanised, computerised lasers and projections) are for sale in corner stores and supermarkets in the weeks running up to this. Less

France’s Front National party has suspended founder Jean-Marie Le Pen over inflammatory remarks amid an ongoing feud with his daughter, party leader Marine Le Pen. Mr. Le Pen refused to attend a party disciplinary hearing on Monday after once again minimising the Holocaust. “I speak freely and this shocks some people,” he told reporters. When asked by a journalist if he would “continue speaking freely,” he replied, “of course.” adding that he has never spoken in the name of the Front National, “I only need to speak in the name of Jean-Marie Le Pen. It’s a reference for a certain number of people,” he said. Many party colleagues have distanced themselves from Mr. Le Pen “You know Jean-Marie Le Pen is a theatrical monstrosity, you have seen putting on his costume of toreador,” said Gilber Collard, Secretary General of Rassemblement Bleu Marine. “It is in any case, rather mind blowing. He is a man who doesn’t back down and he passed this trait of character on to Marine.” His daughter, party leader Marienne Le Pen, has been working to banish the face of the Front National’s far-right past but he made a defiant appearance at the party’s annual May Day rally in Paris. The party said on Monday in a statement that it will call a meeting in three months to strip Mr Le Pen of his title of honourary chairman. His suspension will continue at least until then. Less

The founder of France’s Front National party Jean-Marie Le Pen has reacted angrily to his suspension to the party. Refering to his daughter, the current party leader Marine Le Pen, he said: “Let her get married as soon as possible. I do not want her having my name any more.” The move came after Mr. Le Pen refused to attend a party disciplinary hearing on Monday after making comments minimising the Holocaust. He told reporters he would fight the suspension and would continue to speak out as he saw fit. Marine Le Pen, who succeeded her father as party leader four years ago, said on Sunday she no longer wanted him speaking on the party’s behalf, even though he had retained the position of honorary chairman. On Friday he made a defiant appearance at the party’s annual May Day rally in Paris. Less

“Ils ne passeront pas!” or at least they won’t when Jean-Marie Le Pen is holding court in the corridors of the European Parliament. Le Pen, founder of France’s far-right Front National party, was giving an interview to Euronews when a confrontation took place with UKIP MEP Steven Woolfe. Woolfe, walking in the opposite direction, was seemingly annoyed at the throng of people surrounding Le Pen. He pushed his way through the crowd in a manner which drew the attention of Le Pen, who shouted at Woolfe to take more care. Woolfe, returning to explain his actions, was then blocked off by one of Le Pen’s security guards, who barked at him to ‘move away’. While they may not like to admit it, both parties have rather a lot in common at the moment as somewhat disappointing election performances have led to bitter infighting at the very highest levels. The body of a kidnapped 17-year-old girl, held for a 1.2-million-euro ransom, has been found in eastern Germany. The girl, identified only Anneli-Marie R, went missing on Thursday whilst walking her dog. She was the daughter of a wealthly businessman. Her remains were found on a farm near Leipzig on Monday, police said on Tuesday. Erich Wenzlick, Dresden’s chief prosecutor, said that police believe “it was a murder to cover up their identities.“ The two perpetrators did not wear masks during the kidnapping. They could have been identified by the kidnapped girl.“ Anneli-Marie’s parents had told the kidnappers in an open letter that they were willing to pay. Her screams were the last signs of life her family heard during a call with her abductors on Thursday. Two male suspects, a 39-year-old and a 61-year-old, have been arrested. Less
