Professor Eric Alton is Professor of Gene Therapy and Respiratory Medicine at Imperial College, London and co-ordinates the UK Cystic Fibrosis Gene Therapy Consortium (GTC). The GTC brings together researchers from Oxford, Edinburgh and Imperial College, London working on providing gene therapy for CF patients. They are midway through the world’s largest trial testing the success of gene therapy for CF. This is the video of me and my brother walking across the Alps from Lake Geneva to Nice along the GR5. At the time we booked our plane tickets we didn't realise that the Alps had received it's biggest snowfall in the past 50 years over winter... So even though it was early summer (June), it felt more like spring! Progress was slow through the deep snow on the passes and we had to make a few detours for safety. In the end we didn't make it all the way to Nice before our 20 days ran out, we stopped a few days short at Saint-Étienne-de-Tinée. On July 11, 2012, Gary W. Gallagher delivered a Banner Lecture entitled "More Important Than Gettysburg: The Seven Days Campaign as a Turning Point." Ever since the Civil War ended, it has been a popular pastime to look for dramatic turning points in that conflict. For many, the battle of Gettysburg represents the great event that tipped the balance toward the North. Key political, diplomatic, social, and military issues, however, were at stake in the summer of 1862 as Robert E. Lee and George B. McClellan faced off in the Seven Days Battles. Gary W. Gallagher argues that Lee's victory had a profound effect on the conflict and that perhaps the series of battles waged on the Virginia Peninsula should be regarded as a major turning point of the war. Dr. Gallagher is a professor of history at the University of Virginia. His most recent book is "The Union War." Richard Buchanan is Professor of Design, Management, and Information Systems at the Weatherhead School of Management, Case Western Reserve University. Before joining the Weatherhead faculty in 2008, he served as Head of the School of Design from 1992 until 2002 and from 2002 until 2008 as Director of Doctoral Studies. While at Carnegie Mellon, he inaugurated Interaction Design programs at the Masters and doctoral level. He is well known for extending the application of design into new areas of theory and practice, writing and teaching as well as practicing with the concepts and methods of Interaction Design. He argues that interaction design does not stop at the flatland of the computer screen but extends into the personal and social life of human beings. In keeping with this, he has worked on the redesign of the Australian Taxation System, the restructuring of products and information for the United States Postal Service, and other consulting activities. At the Weatherhead, he has turned his work toward "collective interactions," focusing on problems of organizational change and a reform of management education around the concept of "managing by design." Buchanan is a widely published author and speaker. He is also Co-Editor of Design Issues, the international journal of design history, theory, and criticism published by the M.I.T. Press. During the Stimson Center’s 25th anniversary year, we are convening events to celebrate accomplishments and to consider hard work that lies ahead. One source of pride is Stimson’s involvement in the issues surrounding the negotiation and ratification of the Chemical Weapons Convention. The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons is now 17 years old and the recipient of the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize "for its extensive efforts to eliminate chemical weapons". The OPCW, the United States and other member states explored new territory with the Syrian demilitarization effort, and are still digesting lessons learned. The Syrian government continues to use chemical weapons, and there are other outliers from the CWC and its obligations. Even so, the CWC has helped to strengthen norms against the use of chemical weapons.   Less
