Indian Man 'Grows' Six Inches Through Surgery, Cost about $85,000, nnAt five foot, six inches, Apotheosis was shorter than the average American male and very unhappy about it.nnSo he did something other men who feel short might consider unthinkable: he opted for costly, painful surgeries to make himself "grow" a total of six inches.nn"I realized that the world looked at me a certain way that I didn't look at myself in that certain way," said the 37-year-old New Yorker, who goes by the pseudonym "Apotheosis" in online forums and asked that "20/20" not use his real name. "I wanted the way I felt about myself and the way the world felt about me to be similar."nnApotheosis is one of a "growing" number of men pursuing limb-lengthening procedures for cosmetic reasons.nnDr. Dror Paley, a renowned osteopathic surgeon at the Paley Institute at St. Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach, Fla., performed 650 leg-lengthening surgeries last year.nnMost of Paley's patients have severe deformities or dwarfism, but he also sees cosmetic patients.nn"The majority who come for cosmetic limb lengthening have what we call, height dysphoria. They're unhappy with their height," said Paley, adding that therapy has little effect on changing a patient's views. "It's one of the few psychologic-psychiatric disorders that you can actually cure with the knife."nnThat is precisely the reason why Akash Shukla, 25, decided to undergo the procedure. At age 18, the New Jersey man was devastated to find out that his final height would be 4'11 ½.nn"I felt like my short stature was kind of causing a void inside me- an emptiness in my heart, if you will," he said.nnAnd not everyone was encouraging.nn"There are people that have said, 'just accept what God gave you. But, in some way, shape or form everybody is trying to alter what god gave them. If God gave kids crooked teeth, they get braces," said Shukla, who is now almost 5'2" thanks to the surgery.nnBut limb lengthening is certainly not like straightening teeth.nnOnly a few doctors, including Paley, perform the procedure in the United States.nnSurgeons break the leg bone in two and implant a state-of-the-art telescopic rod into the middle of the broken bones which then pulls the bone apart very slowly, about one millimeter a day.nnNew bone grows around it and tissues like the muscle, the nerves, the arteries, and the skin, regenerate as well.nnAt about $85,000, the procedure is expensive and the process lengthy. It takes at least three months to complete it and it requires demanding and excruciating physical therapy.nnApotheosis is still in recovery and he does not want to go public even though this is his second surgery. "I am still lengthening right now and there could be further complications and I don't want to talk about it successfully until it's been successful."nnBut he is candid about his leg lengthening journey on www.makemetaller.org, an online forum for people interested in the procedure.nn"I am not telling anyone they should do this surgery, but I am laying out my experiences and the risks that I have taken and the successes that I have had and let people make their own decision," he said.nnMany go to the site looking for advice on doctors, often foreign, as the cost for the surgery could be less than half as much overseas.nnApotheosis traveled to Germany to have internal rods implanted and now he is the one responsible for controlling the lengthening, twisting his legs back and forth to extend the rod inside.nnDespite the pain and financial burden, patients like Apotheosis say those few more inches of height can make a big difference.nn"When I walk down the street a different person perceived differently by the world for the rest of my life, you know, I am who I want to be now," he said.nnHe chose the moniker Apotheosis, he said, because "it means to become godlike -- become the best you can be. L'Orange supplies concrete requiems of dusted soul: beats to crack safes, soundtracks to stealth assassinations. nnIf gangsta rap remains one of the genre's most well worn tropes, Jae and L'Orange take inspiration from the rarely tapped roots of the tradition. This isn't riffing on Oliver Stone's "Scarface" like popular cliché, but rather the original Al Capone exploitation flick from the early 30s. Jae conjures a villain who vaporizes. Run-the-Jewels-raw but still sophisticated. Cuban cigars stuffed with California chronic. nnThe picture unfolds wide frame. Tibetan temple music is particularly renowned in the west for its two forms of multiphonic singing known as jok-kay (low tone) and bar-da (high tone). In both forms, each of the main chantmasters simultaneously intones three notes, thus each individually creating a complete chord. The Tibetans are one of the only cultures on earth that cultivate this most extraordinary vocal ability. This tradition is also known as "overtone singing" because it is accomplished by learning to control the muscles of the vocal cavity and then re-shaping it while singing, thus intensifying the natural overtones of the voice. In effect, the body is transformed into an effective overtone amplifier. nnOne night in 1433, the Tibetan lama Je Tzong Sherab Senge awoke from a startling dream. In it he had heard a voice unlike any voice that had ever sounded on the planet. It was a low voice, unbelievably deep, sounding more like the growl of a wild bull than anything human. Combined with this first voice, there was a second. This voice was high and pure, like the sound of a child singing. These two voices, so totally different, had come from the same source and that source was Je Tzong Sherab Senge himself.nnIn this dream, Je Tzong Sherab Senge had been instructed to take this special voice and use it for a new chanting style that would embody both the masculine and feminine aspects of divine energy. It was a tantric voice, a sound that could unite those chanting it in a web of universal consciousness.The next morning, Je Tzong Sherab Senge began to chant his daily prayers. The sounds that came out of him were the sounds he had heard in his dream — unearthly sounds, tantric sounds — and he gathered his fellow monks together to tell them of his dream.nnThat year, more than 500 years ago, the Gyume Tantric Monastery began in Lhasa , Tibet . The monks of this monastery learned to chant in the same voice which Je Tzong Sherab Senge had heard in his dream. It was a voice that enabled each monk to chant three notes at the same time, creating 'One Voice Chords'. Within that same century, another monastery in Lhasa , the Gyuto Tantric College , was founded. The monks at this fellow Tantric College also incorporated this chanting technique in their sacred rituals.nnFor centuries the magical sounds and rituals of Tibet lay enshrouded in the mysteries of a country refusing communication with the outside world. Stories of this unearthly chanting would filter back to the 'civilized' world along with tales of seemingly superhuman abilities which the Tibetan monks were said to possess, but these seemed to be nothing more than myth. In 1950 China invaded Tibet. Certain monks escaped to India, where they continued their tantric rituals. Their spiritual activities remained esoteric, but certain teachers of religion and ethnomusicology were finding their tantric rituals somewhat more accessible. These scientists and scholars would come back to the West with reports of a remarkable chanting technique utilized by the Gyume and Gyuto monks. nnIn Tibetan tantric chanting the goal of the chanting is to invoke and then unite with a particular deity or being. The monks literally become the gods and goddesses to whom they are praying.
