This is our submission for the Student Design Challenge at Interaction16.nnSanitation workers have one of the highest fatality rates in America. Yet it is a thankless job: most of us don’t even think about the workers that clean up after us. Every day, sanitation workers are out on the streets, and they risk getting hit by impatient drivers. A key reason for this problem is that workers become “numb” to hazards because they are immersed in the danger every day. That’s why we’ve created WristGuard, a smart glove that alerts workers in real time about oncoming vehicles. It is paired with a tracking system in the garbage truck which monitors oncoming traffic. We want to come to Helsinki to collaborate with other designers on improving worker safety. As we think about the “future we deserve”, it is important to us that we remember the invisible people that keep public services running, and we design the future that they too deserve.nnVideos taken from New York Times, DSNY, Google, FitBit, Apple, USPS, Imperial Moving and Storage. He was registered by the government as Samson Quinangnaq, but Amarok – “Wolf” in Inuktitut – is his true hunter’s name. He was of the Okusuqsalikmiut, the Soapstone People, who lived along the Back River in the so-called Barrenlands west of the Hudson’s Bay. When repeated famines struck in the 1950’s, Amarok and his family were moved from their traditional lands into the nascent settlement of Baker Lake, and their lives changed forever. nnThis is the story of their survival, and their revival, as artists and hunters whose indomitable spirit carried them through some very difficult decades. With my Inuk co-director Tunalaq (Martin) Kreelak, we go on a journey with four generations of a proud people who turn a corner to face a better future. Less

As spring hits the market lake Kaņieris comes to life. We spent a week living, listening and filming on and around the lake to witness nature's annual singing festival.nnLake Kaņieris is one of the richest lakes in Latvia in terms of bird and fish stocks. The historical significance of the lake for birds can be seen in its name – the Liv word “Kaņieris” originally meant “Goose Lake”. It formed as an ancient sea lagoon left inland, which remained here after deviation of the Lithorina sea. Over the course of time, the lake has experienced significant changes - it was drained several times and flooded, renewed in 1965 and since that time it is being maintained with help of sluices. More than ten islands are located here, six of which have been artificially created before renewal of the water level of the lake. The lake’s fish stocks are replenished each year, not only artificially, but also by allowing the fish to enter the lake from the sea with the help of a floodgate.
