This short film shows the landscape around Stonehenge as recorded by LIDAR survey (airborne 3D scanning). The slit scan image is created using video footage of bioluminescent deep sea creatures, particularly Comb Jellyfish. These creatures acted as a source of inspiration for the form and animation. The city’s practical form lies between the arrangement of the buildings and the imaginations of its inhabitants.nnInspired by the surrealist parlor game exquisite corpse, Exquisite City is a collaborative 3D drawing of one such imaginary neighborhood. ScanLAB projects were commissioned to scan The Young Vic for Haworth Tompkins as part of their exhibition at the Venice Biennial 2012. The animation is on show alongside several 1:1 sections of the facade and will be open in Arsenale till 25th November. nnFor thirty years after its construction in 1970, the Young Vic happily occupied a 'temporary' home designed by Bill Howell. It was much loved by audiences and artists, but by 2004 most of the building was at the end of its useful life, while the Young Vic's needs had expanded with its growing programme of producing, participation and research. Haworth Tompkins were commissioned to replace the building with a larger, more flexible theatre.nnThe aim was to make a theatre that will continue to be knocked around, painted over and generally treated with healthy disrespect by designers, directors, and actors, and to create a dramatically expanded set of theatrical possibilities without any sacrifice of the unique chemistry for which the Young Vic is famous. The dynamic ad, directed by Jeffrey Dates out of Mill+, features a host of CG visuals, including a CGI photo-real car.nThe Mill’s 3D team worked closely under Dates’ direction to craft a series of visuals that represented the drivers ‘instincts’ such as butterflies, goose bumps and flowing hair. Dates comments " it was really important that the emotion of the driver be represented while connecting with the Fusion experience. The thrill and excitement of driving a Ford Fusion can be seen as she feels butterflies as she anticipates driving the car.
